Gameplay Series: Introduction
Red Dead Redemption is an open-world sandbox game developed by Rockstar San Diego and Rockstar North, released on May 18, 2010 (and May 21, 2010 for the rest of the world), and is the spiritual successor to Rockstar San Diego's Red Dead Revolver, which was released in 2004. Redemption has little to none relations (storywise and partially gameplaywise) to it's preceeder. On an intesting note: Red Dead Revolver was first to be developed by Capcom, but was later dropped and picked up by Rockstar, enhancing the game greatly.
Red Dead Redemption is currently only available for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, and there are no plans on bringing it on to PC. However, there still may be chances as Rockstar has said the same for Grand Theft Auto IV (which was released in April 29, 2008, and then eight months later on December 2 (North America) and 3 (Europe) for PC). Both games share the same experiences, but the PS3 version has an exclusive gang hideout and outfit (Solomon's Folly and the Walton's Gang outfit). It uses the same Euphoria engine that GTA IV does, but much much MUCH improved (or largely improved, according to V4 OP Henry Townshend). Not only does the game's engine or whatever it is work for people, but also for FUCKING ANIMALS. Euphoria engages ragdoll physics for fun, epic, and realistic visuals that can assure the player has the best experience possible.
Gameplay Series: Life in the West
Red Dead Redemption takes place in 1911, and is set in Southern USA, and later into Northern Mexico.
Government assholes Agent Edgar Ross and Agent Fordham have captured the protagonist John Marston's wife and kid, and is forced to order John to hunt down his old partners (Bill Williamson and Javier Escuella) of the gang Marston used to be in "after they left him to die and he left them".
In order to find the two, John does errands for all different kinds of people in exchange of finding Bill Williamson and his colleagues. The singleplayer storyline took me about 20 hours to complete.
Gameplay Series: Life in the West II
The entire land in Red Dead Redemption is double the size of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and is seperated of 3 regions: the wild west of New Austin, the deserted Mexico landscapes of Nuevo Pariso, and the land of the woods and rich-folk of West Elizabeth. You have to advance through the story for each region after to be rightfully explored, just like in GTA. Trying to even touch the water won't do you any good as you would just drown, as there were no swimming lessons in the 20th century (false).
My Name is John Marston
The protagonist of Red Dead Redemption in his default outfit: the Cowboy Outfit. This outlaw was in a gang with Bill Williamson, and left the gang after the gang left him to die. The government's on his ass, threating him to have him take down every member of his old gang with his family. Here are John's other outfits and the scraps to obtain them (scraps can be found in any order):

Scrap 1: Search Coot's Chapel - it can be found in the chest in the church
Scrap 2: Complete Twin Rocks Hideout
Scrap 3: Capture or kill Mo van Barr - a bounty in Armadillo
Scrap 4: Win a duel in Armadillo - if you don't want to wait for someone to challenge you to duel, just use the Elegant Suit to cheat in Poker and have someone catch you cheating, which triggers them to duel you
Scrap 5: Complete "American Appetites" Stranger's task - this can be found in Armadillo
This outfit can only be obtained after linking your gamertag/ID to your Rockstar Social Club Account.
You can purchase the suit (after it's been discovered when you first play a game of poker) at the tailor's in Thieves' Landing. You also get the "He Cleans Up Well!" achievement/trophy for 10 gamerpoints (Xbox 360) or Bronze (PS3).

Treasure Hunter Outfit
Scrap 1: Search Silent Stead - in a container in a small house just northwest of the intersection at Silent Stead

It may seem hard at first, but just make sure you don't skip anything as that will mess up the timer. What I did for the more harder combinations was write it down on a piece of paper, then tap the buttons as fast as I fucking could.
Scrap 6: Purchase the scrap at the general store in Escalera - the scrap will be available after you've completed the mission "An Appointed Time".

Weapons and Death
All the weapons you gather can be selectable either through the pause menu, or a neat radial menu. And yes, I mean ALL the weapons. And just for the hell of it, I'll include the rank you need to get each weapon for Multiplayer. Completing the multiplayer PVP challenges for the respected weapon (provided you unlocked the weapon which gives you the challenges) gives you a golden version of that weapon for looks that can be used in any Multiplayer game mode.
Saving advances game time six hours, like in GTA. Although, unlike in GTA, you can't swim, and will instantly die as soon at the upper half (or more, depending on how steep the water is) reaches the water.
Several of the game's mechanics include stuff like camping (which allows you to travel anywhere with your waypoint or a selection of locations provided you've entered them prior, save, and change any outfits you have) and Dead Eye (three levels; level one just gives you slow motion, level two gives you slow motion and an auto-targeting reticule, and level three gives you slow motion and a manual-targeting reticule). Other shit includes buying and selling goods for cash (in which obtaining goods from a certain region and selling them in another gives you more money then you would if you were to sell them in the same region), hunting animals like the fucking annoying wolf pack, bear, and birds, etc.
Random events are another of the many realistic mechanics of Red Dead Redemption. For example, flowerpicking or bird hunting challenges by campers in the open can place bets on who can take the most flower or kill more birds, respectively. Another random event also includes duel challenges, where outlaw-wannabes can challenge Marston to a duel (and as if I can't make that more obvious). To be more in-depth, during the duel, there are two bars: the blue bar is your bar, and the red bar is your opponent's bar. Whoever has the highest bar can win the duel, but be careful not to mount your weapon early, as any bystanders can see this as cheating, and will attack you as soon as you win the duel (if you do, of course). Going into a duel automatically switches to your revolver, and into Dead Eye Mode. More "action-packed" random events include transporting explosives for people into a certain town or settlement, or helping out a pedestrian lost in the wild (however, keep in mind: you can't trust everyone). Both include bandits constantly appearing to try to take you down.
The Rockstar Social Club serves many purposes, especially for Red Dead Redemption, but for now, I'm just going to cover the Social Club Challenges.
On a side note, you only need to get a Silver medal (two out of three requirements) to unlock the cheat.
The Pike's Basin Challenge was made available on May 18, 2010, and it unlocks the "Guns Blazing" cheat, which allows you to put whoever victim in flames from wherever you hit them, to the rest of your body. In order to start the challenge, you'll have to complete the mission "Justice in Pike's Basin" and complete the gang hideout once beforehand (which would also go for the rest of the challenges, unless said otherwise). Requirements include:
1. Kill 3 enemies in one Dead Eye burst - This one should be pretty simple, just enter through the western horizontal-open entrance that's in front a large grassy area on horseback, and you can get the 3 enemies behind rocks. If you don't, then they'll later on be another 3 enemies: 2 behind a rock and 1 on a bridge, but it's somewhat tricky.
2. Drag a gang member through the basin - Pretty simple, leave one guy alive after you've killed a group of gang members, lasso them, and ride around for a couple of seconds until it says you've gotten the requirement.
3. Kill all enemies while on horseback - It doesn't matter if you accidentally dismount your horse - just as long as any kill is done while mounted.
The Gaptooth Breach Challenge was made available on June 15, 2010, and it unlocks the "Guns Set 3" cheat, which gives you Dynamite, Henry Repeater, Pump-action Shotgun, High Power Pistol, Double-action Revolver, and Rolling Block Rifle. You'll have to complete the "Man is Born Unto Trouble" mission before accessing the gang hideout, and then completing the gang hideout again to unlock the challenge itself. Requirements:
1. Collect $200 loot from the gang - Shouldn't be too hard - just kill a couple of gang members and LOOTLOOTLOOT. If you don't think you've gotten $200 by the time you kill everyone and get the treasure chest, the chest itself may contain over $200, and it'll count towards the loot count, but I would just loot every gang member just to be safe.
2. Find 2 Desert Sage plants - Use the Survivalist Map to find Desert Sage easily. I didn't do this one because my Survivalist Map didn't work so I just said "fuck it" and moved on. After like 8 minutes trying to search for fucking Desert Sage, of course.
3. Get 5 headshots in a row - Use Dead Eye fucktons just to be safe.
The Twin Rocks Challenge was made available on June 24, 2010, and it unlocks the "Clear Bounty" cheat, which is self-explanatory. You need to complete the "Obstacles in Our Path" mission to access the gang hideout itself, and, again, completing the gang hideout beforehand also to unlock the challenge itself. Requirements:
1. Shoot the hat off 2 enemies
2. Kill 3 enemies with a knife
3. Disarm 3 enemies - What I did was use a lot of Dead Eye with any handgun. Use it's slow-motion to aim for the hats just to be safe and do this for two enemies. Afterwards, aim for their hand to disarm them. Next, pull out your throwing knives and throw them at the enemies. Then for the final step, shoot another enemy's hand to disarm them to fulfill every requirement.
The Legendary Marksman Challenge was made available on July 14, 2010, and it unlocks the "Beastmaster" cheat, which allows you to have animal companions. Your Sharpshooter Ambient Challenge needs to be Rank 4 before unlocking the challenge. The requirements are as followed:
1. Kill 20 animals and/or humans
2. Get 5 kills in one Dead Eye burst
3. Set Targeting Mode to "Expert"
I would totally offer tips for each requirement, but since the game is completely random, you're gonna have to help yourself.
The Nosalida Challenge was made available on July 30, 2010, and it unlocks the "Rise Up" cheat, which gives every civilian (excluding prostitutes) guns and all you encounter in towns become hostile towards you. The "We Shall Be Together in Paradise" needs to be completed before accessing the gang hideout itself. Requirements:
1. Kill 5 rebels with fire bottles
2. Find 3 treasure chests - The huts/houses you have to use the Fire Bottles on may contain chests in them, so look inside them first before choosing to destroy them as when you enter them afterwards, you won't be able to access any chests.
3. Disarm 2 enemies - Not really any advice to give in this challenge. All I have to say is to try to avoid firing at the Mexican army.
The Fort Mercer challenge was made available on August 19, 2010, and upon completion it unlocks the "Dead Eye Level 3" cheat, which gives you ability the final level of Dead Eye: manual targeting. To gain access to the hideout itself, you must complete the "The Assault on Fort Mercer" mission. Here are the challenge requirements:
1. Kill 10 enemies with a shotgun
2. Hogtie 3 prostitutes
3. Disarm 3 enemies
The Tumbleweed Social Club Challenge was made available on December 17, 2010 (along with the Tesoro Azul and Blackwater challenges), and unlocks the fourth and final "Gun Set 4" cheat (which acquires you the LeMat Revolver, Mauser Pistol, Throwing Knife, Carcano Rifle, Evans Repeater, Bolt Action Rifle, and Semi-Auto Shotgun weapons). To gain access to the Tumbleweed hideout, you have to complete the "New Friends, Old Problems" mission. Challenge requirements:
1. Kill 5 enemies with a knife - I'm sure it's both throwing knives and the melee/hunting knife - but I would try just the hunting knife to be safe
2. Find 3 treasure chests
3. Execute 2 enemies
The Tesoro Azul challenge was made available on December 17, 2010, and, upon completion, unlocks the "Right to Bear Arms" cheat, which gives civilians weapons. You must complete the "The Demon Drink" mission in order for the gang hideout to be available in single player. Requirements are as followed:
1. Kill gang leader without Dead Eye
[b]2.[b] Kill 7 enemies with throwing knives
3. Find 3 treasure chests
The Blackwater challenge was made available on December 17, 2010, and it sought to be the final Social Club Challenge for Red Dead Redemption. Upon getting 2 of 3 of it's requirements, it unlocks the "Punchout" cheat - where a single punch to any living thing is sentenced to a sudden death. You must gain access to West Elizabeth in the story (a la completing the "An Appointed Time" mission) in order to access Blackwater. Requirements:
1. Win 2 pots on a bluff
2. Knock 1 person out of the game - For example: someone bets 'all in', but you have the best hand and win the bet, the person that bet all in gets knocked out of the game.
3. You always bet less than the pot - A special note for this specific challenge: if you've gotten a Silver medal and don't think you can get the third one, just exit the game without forcing yourself to lose the poker game so that you won't fail the Challenge
Outlaws to the End Co-Op Mission Pack Trailer
Outlaws to the End was released on June 22, 2010 free of charge. It includes six co-op missions: The Escape, The Kidnapped Girl, Walton's Gold, The Herd, The River, and Ammunition. Outlaws to the End can be accessed through the regular playlist selection as "Cooperative Missions" (or something like that), along with "Advanced Cooperative Missions" once you've beaten all the co-op missions. Apparently, Outlaws to the End comes with 100 or so new challenges most likely all about Coop. It also adds a "Coop" and "Cooperative" section to your Journal and Leaderboards, respectively. And then it adds 10 new achievements/trophies.
Players can get incapped, and can die within seconds if no one is there help. Like in Left 4 Dead, if every player is incapped, the whole team will die out. At the end of each mission, it will show you the time completed, everyone's score (cash) and total, and the medal you've gotten.
In "The Escape", players must take down gang members in The Scratching Post, then choose to split two and two with a stagecoach and coach with a machine gun attached.
The Kidnapped Girl
In "The Kidnapped Girl", players must take down gang members in Fort Mercer, and then take the kidnapped girl into a stagecoach, where you will attempt to lead her into safety at Ridgewood Farm. Where there will also be gang members.
In this mission, players must carry 8 bags of gold (and if you've played any competitive multiplayer that has to do with the gold bags, then you'd know you can only carry two at a time..right?) inside of Gaptooth Bridge while also being attacked by members of Walton's Gang.
My favorite: "The Herd". Players must clear the way of a heap of gang members in Pike's Basin (those who grind the Hideout will easily recognize "the way") and must then herd at least 5 of 20 cows into Armadillo.
In "The River", players must use the raft to take down gang members through a river.
In Ammunition, players must secure the western side of Tesoro Azul from the Mexican Army, and head further up into the hill and secure more of the Mexican Army. Soldiers with cannons fire cannonballs into Tesoro Azul, so the task may be not as simple as you think. The main goal is to explode the Mexican Army's campsite near the cannons.
Legends and Killers Pack Trailer
The Legends and Killers Pack was released on August 10, 2010 for 800 Microsoft Points / $9.99, and adds a bit more to the PVP area of Multiplayer. IMO, it was made with Competitive players in mind, as it adds 9 multiplayer map locations:
The said multiplayer map locations are available to play in:
The pack also includes 9 multiplayer characters from the 2004 spiritual precedent Red Dead Revolver (that can be seen by players who haven't installed the DLC in the free "Hunting & Trading Outfits" DLC pack (released in October 5, 2010) - which also includes the Expert Hunter and Savvy Merchant outfits, and Legendary Jackalope):
Upon installation of the Legends and Killers Pack, 10 achievements/trophies will be added to achieve, totaling up to 100 gamerpoints.
Oh, and it also includes tomahawks.
Liars and Cheats Pack Trailer
Liars and Cheats TV Spot
The Liars and Cheats Pack was released on September 21, 2010 for 800 Microsoft Points / $9.99, and it adds a bunch to the Free Roam portion of Red Dead Redemption's multiplayer. Being merged with the Free Roam Pack, the pack adds; Multiplayer Gambling (Liar's Dice and Poker), Horse Races, and an attack-and-defend mode called Stronghold. Each also have their own in-game challenges to complete, which will reward you new multiplayer titles.
The Free Roam portion of the pack adds 4 new hunting grounds and 7 new gang hideouts. If you have the highest score upon completing any of the new gang hideouts, you will be rewarded the Explosive Rifle, a devastating rifle that when you shoot, your bullet will explode hella big explosion. However, it only holds 5 bullets to avoid griefing. Once you change sessions or die, you can't re-obtain it. And can only re-obtain it by getting the highest score in a new hideout.
You can also obtain the Explosive Rifle in Stronghold Mode, if you're the one to crack the safe. The Explosive Rifle can also be obtained from the Gunsmith at Blackwater in Singleplayer, with it's own ambient challenge, and can hold to about 29-30 bullets.
Upon installation of the Liars and Cheats Pack, 15 achievements/10 achievements will be added. In addition to achievements, the Outfitters will have 2 new classes: Redemption and Damnation. Characters include:

Undead Nightmare Launch Trailer
The Undead Nightmare Pack was released to download on October 26, 2010 for 800 Microsoft Points / $9.99 - along with the Undead Nightmare Collection, which includes the Legends and Killers, Liars and Cheats, and Undead Nightmare Packs for a price of 1600 (you're basically getting one free DLC!). Undead Nightmare was also released on November 22, 2010 (in America) and November 26, 2010 (in Europe) in a retail disc for $29.99 including every DLC to date (Undead Nightmare, Outlaws to the End, Legends and Killers, and Liars and Cheats) without the need of the original Red Dead Redemption. Upon installation of the Undead Nightmare Pack, the "Undead Nightmare" option in the main menu is unlocked for full usage.
In this pack is solely an all-new, non-canon Singleplayer adventure, where players can roam once again as John Marston, on the search to find a cure for this sudden undead plague of fresh Undead, Bolters, Bruisers, and Retchers. Use six new weapons: the Torch, Blunderbluss, Zombie Bait, Boom Bait, and Holy Water to fend off zombie hordes.
All activities from the original game are gone, and markers on every settlement/town/gang hideout/etc. have been placed, and upon near entrance, John has to save every town from becoming overrun. Saving each settlement rewards you with a new weapon, and the Manzanita Post and Rathskeller Fork settlements reward you with the Tomahawk and Explosive Rifle, respectively, and if you have bought and installed their corresponding DLC packs.
Undead Nightmare also has a multiplayer component: Undead Overrun - fight off endless rounds of zombies with up to 4 people in many different locations. Also coming with 8 new zombie multiplayer characters (that you cannot use in Undead Overrun): Poe Ball, Magic Jackson, Zombie Ricketts, Viper Craven (dubbed the winner of a Rockstar Event that happened earlier in 2010), Zombie Marston, Ishmael Rombi, Sarah Reese, and Paco Romero. Try to guess all the references.
In addition, Zombie animals and mythical creatures have also been unleashed in the wild, examples including:
- Zombie Grizzly
- my fucking arch-nemesis Zombie Cougar
- The Four Horses of the Apocalypse: Death (a black-to-white-colored horse that fucking had wind trailing behind it, popping zombie fuckers' heads), Famine (a dark brown horse that smells like shit because it's got flies swarming around it, but this bitch never gets tired), Pestilence (a fucking sick and infected version of the Hungarian Half-bred, this blanco niño looks like shit, but it also looks like THE shit), and War (IT'S A FUCKING RED RAPIDASH - this radish motherfucker leaves an igniting trail behind it, burning zombie fucks into ashes)
In addition to the five above mentioned DLC packs, Rockstar also plans on bringing the pre-order bonuses (of the Deadly Assassin Outfit, Golden Weapons Pack, and War Horse) available for purchase sometime in April. Here's the exact quote:
R* Y posted:
Red Dead Redemption offers a nice amount of unique cheats that are enabled in a unique way. Most of the cheats have to be entered through a cheat phrase that are found throughout the game world. There are only a few cheats that are left to be unfound, while a few others are unlocked through getting a Silver medal for Social Club Challenges (which will be explained in the next section). When you enter a cheat phrase, they are only grammar-sensitive, so type them the exact way they appear in terms of grammar (although few cheat phrases found in-game are different than when you enter them).
After enabling cheats, you can't autosave, nor acquire any achievements/trophies, and you will have to reload any non-cheat save to earn achievements/trophies.
Here are the list of all of the cheats with their corresponding info (just to note: all of the cheats themselves were first found by hex editors):

Because Henry demands it.
[release]It's not until you've completed the game that you learn the definition of Cougarpocalypse.
I, too, was like you at one time. A time before I had completed the story missions. My only predatory concern was the grizzly bears, but they were confined in Tall Trees. My first few hours of life as Jack Marston was a carefree affair. Shooting the breeze with bandits? Easy. Evading the long arm of the law? Simple. But it was only until I decided to go for a walk along the praries of West Elizabeth that my skills as a survivalist were put to the test.
It was about midnight. I'd set up a camp to change Jack into that newly-acquainted US Marshal outfit. The plains were bare, barren, lifeless. In fact I had thought of turning off the xbox. Suddenly, looking over the hill, I notice a indistinct figure laid down in the beige grass. I tried targetting it with my trusty Bolt Action rifle. It sees me, and subsequently escapes. Having no idea of what I'd just encountered (unleashed), I shrugged it off as a wolf and carry on looking for whatever made-up plant I was hunting.
Half a minute later I hear a high-pitched growling noise - akin to that of a tiger preparing to pounce. Before I even had a chance to turn around, I was knocked over by a brown lightning bolt. Holy crap, I thought. Jack recovered from his temporary debilitation, and I start sprinting after the growling blob. I caught up with it when it stopped to turn around for another bout, and shot three rounds with my High Power pistol. Ha! I almost said out loud.
But this bitch was persistent. With the conviction of a Terminator, that cougar just stumbles, and darts off again. This is when I got scared. I shot in its general direction. Not even a heartbeat after I lost track of it, another one comes at me. Shocked at the fact that there's two of them rather than the fact I am on the brink of death, I was in a state of disbelief.
The first cougar came back.
The camera panned out, and that all-too-familiar 'DEAD' came up.
And that's how Cougarpocalypse started.
[/release]Cougars are the fucking scourge and deadlions of Red Dead Redemption. These sneaky little fuckers will cougar anyone nearby, sometimes without notice. You have two options: be a pussy and get the fuck out, or be hella badass and shoot the little fucker with your sawed-off shotgun. Think you're tough and badass? In a Private Hardcore Free Roam room, go into Tanner's Reach ALONE with no other players in your game to show how lonely the dying west was. That's where all the cool girls hang out to kill anyone in sight. Maybe, if you've reached the challenge, you'll even get to encounter the legendary cougar by the name of Khan. And not live.
Here are fine examples of a cougar'd situation (image and link provision both courtesy of Jericho_Rus):
And a Team Fortress 2 comic!! http://www.teamfortress.com/loosecanon/04.html
And here is another wonderful drawing (courtesy of Sie-Sveinhund):

IT CAME OUTTA NOWHERE MAN. THEY AREN'T SUPPOSED TO BE IN HENNIGAN'S STEAD.
THEY. ARE NOT. SUPPOSED. TO BE THERE. :ohdear:
Keep your eyes peeled and your rifles at the ready, children."
[/release][release]"I think I finally understand the meaning of the phrase "cougar'd".
So there I was, hopping off my horse, grabbing some red sage, then BAM! my horse got cougar'd. I engage in a short battle with the cougar. I then reuse my Kentucky saddler deed and whistle another horse but as it draws near, BAM AGAIN!! ANOTHER cougar literally intercepts my horse, instantly killing him again. Pissed, I unload on the 2nd cougar like a rabid motherfucker. With the cougar skinned as punishment, I bring out the horse deed, again. But as I'm in the whistling animation, the 2nd cougar's cousin immediately pop up onscreen, and BAM A THIRD TIME!!! unleashes some sort of "double hit combo attack" on me, and now I'm dead.
Also, "KILLERJC CAN DRIVE WAGONS LIKE AN ATHIEST IN A RELGION THREAD. RUN THAT SHIT OFFROAD NIGGA."
Seriously, don't fucking fret.
