oldschool runs like ass on just about any modern midrange laptop or low-end desktop. It's a 13 year old game. Jagex won't spend any money on modifying the engine because people will continue to play the game anyways.

I honestly wish this were the tack that Bethesda would take with modern day elder scrolls/fallout games rather than the immersion-killing as shit ~essential character~ system. Though considering FO4, would be kinda' amusing if like Dogmeat died early on and the player was left wondering why the fuck a random-ass dog was essential to the plot, lol.

Hrm... New thought, dogmeat should've been one of many options for finding the fort that Kellog was hiding out in during Fallout 4, making that character specifically non-essential to the plot. Likewise, should've been possible to find it through random exploration as well.

You say that and then a troll kills Delphine on the road when you turn your head.

The solution to that is very simple. Make the npcs essential when anything but the player tries to kill them. That or have them be essential from non player damage up until the player first interacts with them.

    Edited:

Or you know, just make the AI better so they run away when in danger or only go out with an armed escort that isn't laughably weak.

    Edited:

Honestly there's plenty of solutions to the problem but the reason they don't get used over the essential system because it's way easier to simply check a box that makes them immortal.

what I imagine happened is that this came about when they were working out the kinks in the radiant AI system, and discovered that plot-essential characters would get themselves killed or some other stupid shit would happen, and figured that making essential NPCs unkillable (since the vast majority of the playerbase, in a serious, immersion-focused run, wouldn't attack them, outside of specific scenarios) would break immersion far less than tampering with the AI to try and prevent such things
