    Arms Race is back and this time bigger and better!

    For those new to Arms Race, this is a TF2 weapon mod competition. To enter, simple make a TF2 weapon mod and send me the download link by the due date, but follow the rules of course. You can use this thread to post questions, share concepts, and showoff your mod(s).

    However, there is a new twist this year: Contracts (I swear I came up with this before the Gun Mettle update). These are additional award categories that you can enter into by following special rules. Contracts are like mini contest within Arms Race 2. They don’t replace the main contest though ( as in 1st thru 6th place). Contracts are just a new way to gain extra prizes. See the contract section for more details.

    There is also a new and exciting kind of prize for Arms Race 2: Team Fortress 2 Classic implementation. Entries will have a chance to be featured in the fan-made standalone mod Team Fortress 2 Classic as playable weapons! See the prize section for details.

    Entries created before June 15, 2015 are not allowed.
    Remakes of previously created weapons are not allowed.
    Entering other peoples work as your own is not allowed.
    Entries that are not functional mods are not allowed (but nonsensical is quite alright).
    Cosmetic items, like shoes, are not allowed. Backpacks are allowed, but they must be designed for the Solider or Sniper (or part of a Medigun).
    Please use the art assets listed in the Workshop section, for your Workshop Submission(s).
    Using concepts made before the contest release is allowed.
    Any size team is allowed (within reason).
    A person can enter as many weapons as they wish into the contest.
    Mods can be released at any time.

    Please note, the rules (and everything else on this page) are subject to change.




    This year, participants will be able to post their entry to workshop whenever they want; no more waiting for the contest to end. Participants can also release their entry as a mod at any time. I’ll even feature the mod in the OP.

    However, you are not required to submit your entry to the Workshop.

    Here’s a Countdown Clock for convenience.

    This gives you about 2 months to make weapons, but don't delay, you'll want to have time to make entries for the second round of contracts.

    A download link to your entry must be sent to me via Facepunch Private Message by the deadline. Late entries will not be accepted and updates after the deadline will not count. Please make sure you enable receiving private messaging on FP and have a functional link to your steam profile on Facepunch. This is to make it easier for me to contact you if you win.

    When sending your entry to me, please make an individual message for each entry and use the following format…
    Message Title: “Weapon Name - Submission”.
    Organize the message body like this:
    - Contributor(s): Steam Username & Facepunch Username with links (please have the text be the links, rather than a having a separate link)
    - Link to a 512x512 image of your entry (Workshop thumbnail size).
    - Entry Name
    - Entry Class
    - A list of any custom sounds, projectiles, particles, or animations with links to any video footage/gifs of them
    - The contract(s) you are entering your weapon into
    - Mod download (and emporium image link if available)

    Also, If you are interested in having your entry included in TF2C, please make a note of it in your submission message.



    Contracts are additional categories you can enter your mods into to win extra prizes. This means you can win the main contest (1st thru 6th place) and a contract with the same entry. In order to enter your mod into a contract, simply follow the rules of the contract when creating your weapon (and when you submit your entry, list the contracts you want that entry to apply to). . You can enter a single weapon into multiple contracts and you can enter multiple weapons into the same contract. You will always receive prizes from the contracts you win, regardless how many contracts you win (even if you win twice with one entry).

    If a contract does not have at least two entries from unique participants, it will be canceled and the prizes will be shifted into the main contest or different contracts.

    Below are the starting contracts of Arms Race 2. However, with enough prize donations, I’ll be adding four additional contracts midway through the contest, based on donor ideas and voted in by popular choice. The new contracts will be added on August 8th.


    Building
    Goal: Create a new building for the engineer. It can be a designed to replace a sentry, dispenser, or teleporter. It does not need to match the proportions, animation, or functionality of the buildings in game, but you’ll still need to submit a mod (even it looks a nonsensical in-game). For example you can make a sentry that doesn’t fire rockets or bullets and which doesn’t match up with the projectiles/particles of the machine gun and rocket launcher. You should still have a proper build animation though.
    Requirements:
    - Must be an engineer building
    - The winner will be the highest rated weapon in the primary poll, which meets the requirements.


    Custom
    Goal: Design a weapon that does not use its normal ammunition. So for example, you can build a Rocket launcher that doesn't launch rockets, A flame thrower that doesn't throw flames, or A minigun that doesn't, uh, gun minis...you get the idea. See this official document for ideas.
    Alternatively, you can design a weapon that has custom animations. the Mercs will no longer be restrained by society’s standards for holding and reloading weapons.
    Requirements:
    -The weapon must have a custom projectile, particle, or animation that should be unique from what is being replaced.
    - If necessary you can replace something with nothing
    - Cannot be an engineer building
    - The winner will be the highest rated weapon, in a secondary poll, that meets the requirements.


    Melee
    Goal: Make a melee weapon, the kind you hit people with.
    Requirements:
    - The weapon must be a melee weapon.
    - The winner will be the highest rated weapon, in the primary poll, that meets the requirements.


    Medigun
    Goal:
    Create a medigun with a backpack. That's it.
    Requirements:
    - The weapon must be a medigun and must include a backpack.
    - The winner will be the highest rated weapon, in the primary poll, that meets the requirements.


    Home Made by BloodFart
    Goal: Design a weapon that is built by hand or a jerry rigged weapon built from many different parts. You can incorporate manufactured weapons into the design, but it should have extra parts that are added
    Requirements:
    - The weapon must look home made
    - The winner will be the highest rated weapon in a secondary poll that meets the requirements.


    Electrically Powered by CoBalt
    Goal: Make a weapon that appears powered by electricity in some way. Maybe the gun shoots lasers, plasma, or electricity, maybe projectile could be propelled by a force powered by electricity, or maybe it’s a melee weapon that electrocutes target.
    Requirements:
    - The weapon must look electrically powered
    - The winner will be the highest rated weapon in a secondary poll that meets the requirements.


    Arm Augmentation by butilka4
    Goal: Make a weapon that encompasses the whole hand as though the hand was replaced with the weapon. The weapon can be for any class, not just the engineer.
    Requirements:
    - The weapon must look like it replaces the wearer’s hand
    - The winner will be the highest rated weapon in a secondary poll that meets the requirements.


    Dual Purpose by TheJukebox
    Goal: Make a weapon that is used for any combination of 2 weapon slots. The weapon could be a sniper rifle that is also a club, a rocket launcher with an underslung shotgun, etc.
    Requirements:
    - The weapon must be a single model & texture (can be 2 different mdl files) that is designed for two weapon slots. The model & texture must be the same for both slots. The only difference can be rotations, different rigging, and other non-cosmetic changes.
    - The weapon must be for the same class
    - Cannot be a building
    - The winner will be the highest rated weapon in a secondary poll that meets the requirements.




    The winners will be chosen by popular vote. I will reserve my vote for a tie, so I can break it. I couldn't do a second Arms Race without upping the ante, so to start Arms Race 2 off, their is over $400 worth of prizes to be won. Hopefully with donations we can get even more prizes.

    - All game are pulled together into the Game Selection and each tier/contract winner can claim a specific amount of games from the Game Selection, depending on how they won. Tiers (1st thru 6th place) will get to pick first (starting with 1st place) and then the contract winners will pick afterwards (in the order they are listed in this post).
    - Due to regional restrictions on some Steam games, you may not be able to get the prizes you want from the Game Selection.
    - Participants in a team must decide among themselves how to share the prizes. All members of a team must verify with me who they want the prizes to go to, before they will be given out.
    - You can only win prizes from a single tier if you submit more than one entry. This will not affect your partners, unless members of your group also won more than one tier. This, however, does not apply to contracts. You can win prizes from multiple contracts, with the same or different entries.



    Additional Prizes



    Team Fortress 2 Classic Implementation: The most exciting prize of Arms Race 2 (I think at least), is having the opportunity to have you entry featured in Team Fortress 2 Classic. TF2C is a community stand-alone mod based on an early version of TF2. Your entry will have a chance to be included in TF2 Classic as a playable weapon. Your entries inclusion is at the discretion of the TF2 Classic team. They will handle the stats for the weapon, so your weapon may not be implemented in the way you intended (for example a entry may be used for the Deathmatch Mercenary, instead of the intended class). The development and testing of stats takes a long time, so accepted weapons may not get added for months.

    If you are interested in having your entry included in TF2C, please make a note of it in your submission message.

    Please note, you don't have to have to make your entry compatible with Team Fortress 2 Classic and you don't have to allow your entry to be apart of Team Fortress 2 Classic in order to submit an entry. Both those are optional.



    Defy Gravity: Everyone one who submits a proper entry will receive a copy of Defy Gravity. There is a limited supply though, so make sure to get your entry in early before they run out. (One per participant. Declining/returning the prize does not count as a prize donation.)



    TF2 Badges: Every participant of Arms Race 1 & 2 will receive an in game badge. There is a first, second, and third place badge, as well as a participation badge. Arms Race 2 participants will receive their badge after the voting ends.




    I wasn't expecting so many donations for the first Arms Race, but they made the contest extra special and really solidified the community’s desire for cool weapons. When I started the first Arms Race, I only had a couple steam cards and single game to give away. However, thanks to many generous people, I ended up with a massive selection of prizes.

    The most popular form of donation are steam games. When you buy a steam game and add it to your inventory, you will not be able to trade it for 30 days afterwards. However, you can still donate games to me as gifts within this 30 day period and I'll be able to add it to my inventory. If we are not friends on Steam, you can still send me trade offers by using this link or you can message me on steam and we can become friends.

    I'll be accepting donations up until the contest ends.

    Yup contracts are extra prizes you can win on top of the main contest (1st - 6th). So if your medigun won first place you would win the first place prize and the contract prize.

    Rad, I might make one if time permits. What's with the arbitrary June 15th cutoff date for entries though? Doesn't that just favor people that knew the contest was coming?
    I did some teasing on the emporium for the contest on June 15th, so I didn't want someone to start working on an entry after that only to find out it cant get in.

    I would like to ask, when you say for one of the contracts that you have to make a weapon that doesn't shoots it's normal ammunition. Does it mean that we can make rocket launchers that shoot flares, grenades or shells?

    Any custom projectile in this case, I think - even Dildos... Though I'm not sure why would you make any weapon shoot dildos at all.

    Yeah, anything that isnt a rocket really.

    Dont hesitate to go even crazier though. You can make a rocket launcher that shots baseballs, rocks, or boots.


    (If you go with a grenade though, just make sure it isn't an RPG.)

    I just decided to get into 3D modeling yesterday. This could not come at a better time! I'll learn 3D modeling while making a weapon for this contest. Can anyone recommend a good 3D modeling software? One where I can use my work in any way without a license? I just installed AutoDesk Fusion 360 with a student license, but I could really only make things for my portfolio with that. Also if someone has tips they could give me before I start that would be nice.

    Blender is completely free.

    Here's a tutorial on how to use blender for making TF2 items (the title says its old, but weapons still use the old system, so it should cover your needs).

    Here's a tutorial on how to use blender for making TF2 items (the title says its old, but weapons still use the old system, so it should cover your needs).
