To any newcomers, welcome! Ask other players or myself about setting up your country and playing.

The game begins in the year 1000 CE spanning to the year 1500 CE. Each turn will cover 15 years.

    RULES:

    1. Send in a PM to Mr. Face, with the following title: "Countryname: Turn X"
    2. DON'T write turnsheets that are too long. It may be tempting, but unless I can copypaste it in, turns take longer.
    3. DO write up to 10 and no more lines (of commands) in your turn. Any PM exceeding this will be immediately deleted.
    4. The PM you send will take the following form for the first turn:

    Flag: (image is 250x150 pixels)
    Country name:

You must also send in your commands:

Technology: (You give me 3 technologies to research, and one of them will be randomly selected to be researched)
Military: Everything involving your military goes here. Also includes expansion on the map via force.
Domestic affairs: Everything inside of your countries borders.
External affairs: Everything outside of your countries borders. Includes expansion on the map via peaceful methods.
    Have at it.

    Countries taken:
    England - Deng
    Kievan Rus' - Griffster
    Poland - SniperComZero
    France - Native Hunter

    - Leif Eriksson and the Vikings become the first Europeans to make contact with the Americas.
    - The Battle of Calatañazor takes place as the Christian armies of Casille and Leon defeat invading Muslim forces.
    - Malcolm II is crowned the king of the Scots in 1005 after killing Cináed III and his son Giric II.
    - A massive supernova occurs in May of 1006, it is said that the light of the supernova provided enough light to read at night even with a dark moon.
    - Georgia is unified under King Bagrat III
    - Mohammed II succeeds Hisham II as Caliph of Cordoba in 1008 before being succeded by Suleiman II in the following year then in 1010 Hisham II is restored as Umayyad caliph.
    - Pope John XVIII becomes Pope in 1004 and abdicates in 1009. Pope Sergius IV replaces him before his death in 1012. Pope Benedict VIII succeeds Sergius IV.
    - Ramon Borrell, Count of Barcelona, sacks Cordoba in 1010.
    - Beowulf is written.
    - The Jews are expelled from the Caliphate of Cordoba in 1013.

    Kievan Rus - Griffster26
    State Religion - Orthodox

    - A new type of unit becomes widespread in Russia at this time: the crossbow. It is a much more accurate weapon than most traditional bows and releases more kinetic energy as well, allowing it to penetrate armor that many bows would be ineffective against.
    - As time passes it becomes clear that the kingdoms that make up Kievan Rus' desire more power. It is unclear who will obtain this power but it is clear that Russia will either centralize or split entirely into a series of small, quabbling kingdoms.
    - Through the use of blood and brutality the Russians expand westward and southward, slaughtering the ill trained peasants of these areas that separate Kievan Rus' from the Polish and Pechenegs. A non-aggression pact is signed with the Pechenegs to ensure they do not become violent towards the expanding Russians.

    England - Deng
    State Religion: Catholicism

    - Travelers in the Islamic regions come home with tales of a device known as the spinning wheel. It is a device for spinning thread or yarn from fibers at a much more efficient pace than that of hand spinning. Already the spinning wheel is becoming an important device for the English.
    - The Crown establishes Marcher Lords and empowers them to build motte and bailey castles along the borders of the Welsh. The territories given to these Marcher Lords are jurisdictionally separate from one another and Royal writ does not apply to these Marches. Marcher lords rule supreme in these lands.
    - These marches begin to expand westward into Welsh territory, subjugating the people of these lands to their rule and, by extension, English rule.
    - While expanding the lords of the marches take note of a dominant Welsh weapon in the longbow. Through heavy training and intense practice a longbowmen can strike from a much further distance and with much more accuracy than the traditional bowman.
    - A professional army is established in England composed of heavy infantry and the newly incorporated longbowmen of Welsh originality.
    - The efficiency of the justice system increases drastically with the introduction of circuit judges. These judges travel on a pre-set path across the countryside taking on court cases along the way so as to not require defendants to travel the long distance to London. All disputes are settles using the King's law rather than canonical or local law, making the justice system much more coherent.
    - The Curia is introduced in this time frame as well as an advisory council. Lords or representatives of the lords are appointed so long as they are literate and knowledgeable in mathematics. The curia manages the King's finances while the advisory council manages the political affairs of the country.
    - Lords are given the power to build and manage infrastructural projects such as toll roads, stone bridges, watermills and the like. The immediate costs of these projects are somewhat high but the income generated down the road will offset these costs.
    - Market towns begin to spring up due to increased granting of market rights. A small fee is paid to give these towns market rights, putting more money in the coffers of the King while allowing farmers to more easily sell their produce.
    - The Danes have been a thorn in the side of the English for decades, raiding numerous towns along the coastline and demanding tribute in exchange for peace. King Æthelred finally attempts to put a permanant stop to this by diplomacy, offering the cutting of duties on trade with the Danes. This keeps the Danish fleets away from 1003-1009 but King Sweyn Forkbeard, hungering for the English throne, launches an invasion in 1010. He faces little resistance until laying siege to Barbury Castle. Sweyn has let his guard down a bit at this point, thinking there are no large military forces in England. Camp is set up outside of the hill, preventing anyone from entering and leaving. King Æthelred chose this location to spring a trap, surrounding Sweyn's invading force with a large army. Forkbeard's forces were bombarded with intense longbow fire before a massive charge on his forces. Sweyn is killed in the Battle of Barbury and the Danish invasion is destroyed. Sweyn's son, Cnut, manages to escape unscathed and returns to Denmark. He is crowned the king of Denmark and his first act is to sue for peace with Æthelred
    - Following the war King Æthelred orders a grand survey. A "Domesday" book begins being written in the year 1014, its purpose is to find what taxes are owed to the crown.

Kingdom of France - Native Hunger
    State Religion - Catholicism

    - Similar to Kievan Rus', the French begin replacing the traditional bow with the crossbow.
    - A small army is commissioned and garrisoned in Paris, providing adequate protection in the French capital for a relatively small fee.
    - Rather than going through nobility and blood lines, soldiers are promoted by merit. This bothers the nobles as they feel it is their rightful place to lead.
    - King Robert II orders the serfs of France to expand their farmlands, allowing for more food production but causing a fair number of complaints from the peasants as their workload has just sharply increased.
    - Craftsman shops begin to pop up throughout the cities of France.
    - In an attempt to curb potential food shortages the King orders an increase in internal trade, putting exports at an all time low.
    - Merchants are sent out to Flanders and Frisia in an attempt to bring traders in those cities to Paris instead. This serves to annoy the governments in these locations and the merchants are forced out of the region.
    - In 1002 a large council meeting consisting of the major French lords is held. In it there are discussions on where to take the Kingdom. This meeting becomes annual and is known as the Réunion des Seigneurs. It serves to please the nobles of France.
    - Alliances are offered to Navarre and Asturias with both accepting quite happily.
    - An offer of marriage of the heir to France with a princess of Burgundy is made as well as an offer of an alliance. The marriage is accepted however the alliance is not yet as they do not yet fully trust King Robert II.

    Holy Roman Empire - LoganIsAwesome
    State Religion - Catholicism

    - Three-field crop rotation becomes common practice for farmers in the Holy Roman Empire, using a rotation of rye or wheat in the winter followed by oats or barley in the spring and leaving the soil fallow in the third stage. This allows the soil to remain fertile and productive.
    - Attempts to reform the army fail massively. The autonomy of the noble generals who lead their armies is tested by an attempt to create a central command in Vienna. Not only does this anger the nobles but it completely destroys the mobility of the armies as they have to wait for orders from a city that is a fairly large distance away from them.
    - Various trade agreements with the neighbors of the Empire are requested with only a few signing on, most notably is England.
    - Another massive failure for the Empire is the attempt to centralize the country. King Henry II makes attempts to take power away from the various duchies and kingdoms that make up the Holy Roman Empire, leading to a number of them rebelling

Empires & Revolutions: The Great Schism
    Turn 2: 1015-1030

    Map:

    Music:

    World Events:
-King Cnut launches raids on the English. While he is gone his son, Harold, attempts to usurp the throne. He is caught, tortured, and beheaded publicly for his insolence.
Vladimir the Great dies and is replaced by Sviatopolk as the Grand prince of Kievan Rus' but is replaced by Yaroslav the Wise in 1019.
Olaf II of Norway declares himself the king of Norway. He dies in 1022 and is succeeded by his son Anun Jakob.
John XIX succeeds his brother Pope Benedict VIII as the Pope.
Henry III, son of Conrad II, is elected king of the Germans in 1028.

    England – Deng
    State Religion: Catholicism

The English undergo an architectural shift during this time, new structures are characterized by semi-circular arches, thick walls, and a number of piers, columns, and arcades. This is dubbed Romanesque architecture.
In 1016 King Æthelred dies. He is replaced by Edmund II.
Expansion of the military becomes a priority. Professional longbowmen are trained and put permanently under the employ of the crown.
A second campaign is launched in Wales in 1026 with disastrous results. The entire army sent to Wales is routed in the Battle of Cardiff and those that are captured are summarily executed.
Castle building is still a priority, they continue to dot the countryside. Many are built of sturdy stone.
Trial by Jury is introduced as a way to resolve disputes, replacing revenge killings and trial by combat as the English look to become more civilized.
Courtly manners and etiquette are established as a necessary part of noble culture. Gone are the days of nobles slobbering over their food and belching and expelling flatulence at the table, respectfulness and politeness come first.
Shires are established throughout England, allowing for local governance without need for micromanagement by the Crown.
All legal documents are published in both Latin and English. Financial records of the crown are carefully managed and stored.
Minting of gold, silver, and copper coins begins.
Emissaries are sent to Scotland and Ireland in an effort to improve relations and develop trade. This goes incredibly well, the Scots pay tribute and pledge support to the crown in the case of hardship and warfare and the Irish pledge full fealty to the crown.
In 1029 the Danes begin raids of the English docks again, King Cnut personally joins the fleet. Cnut's son, Harold, attempts to usurp the crown while Cnut is gone but fails horrifically. He is apprehended and rack torture is used on him, ripping his joints and ligaments apart, Crocodile Shears are used on his genitalia, and finally he is beheaded publicly. The raids of England continue in earnest.
Merchants are sent to the main continent to establish ties with the cities and nations there. Income from trade increases dramatically.

    Caliphate of Cordoba – Xonax
    State Religion: Islam

Forest glass is produced in Cordoba in 1017 using wood ash and sand as the main materials.
Half of the standing armies of Cordoba are sent to Badajoz, Valencia, and Granada to quell the rebellion in those areas. None are yet forced back into Cordoba's hands but they are all close to it.
The other half of the military is tasked with defending Cordoba from the armies of Leon. The cities closer to the border are razed so as to prevent invaders from taking supplies and the armies sit a fair amount inside the borders to allow for a buffer zone. Leon invades from the northwest and is absolutely crushed in battle, forced to turn and run. However, the French surprise Cordoba with an invasion from the northeast. the armies of the French manage to wrap around behind the Cordoban defenders and wreak havoc on their supplies as well a whittle down the size of their armies.
Taxes are reduced across the board to placate the people in hopes of preventing further rebellion. This succeeds.
Emissaries are sent to the Middle East and North Africa in an attempt to recruit help from fellow Islamic nations. All refuse politely and wish good luck to Cordoba.

Kingdom of France – Native Hunter
    State Religion – Catholicism

Travelers who have visited China have come home talking of a marvel of engineering. A narrow basin that can be emptied of water or flooded as seen fit to allow for easier construction, maintenance, and repair of boats and ships. The French attempt to copy this with their own dry docks but manage to flood a nearby town, killing dozens and displacing many more. Still, the French learned from this and successfully built a drydock in 1025.
A campaign dubbed the Reconquista is launched and Iberia is invaded with great success. The Catholic armies catches the Islamic armies of Cordoba by surprise, causing a great number to rout. Those that don't run are soon killed or captured. Prisoners of war are forced into slavery to replace the peasants that join the Reconquista.
Asturias and Navarra are both asked to join the war effort. Asturias rejects forcefully and makes it known that they are displeased with the expectation of fighting for France. Navarra joins faithfully, fighting alongside their brothers in France.
King Robert II sends Robert the Magnificent of Normandy an offer to take his son William on as a ward to learn the ways of governance with an eventual goal of being the Master of Coin for France. Robert the Magnificent declines, stating he has higher ambitions than just the Master of Coin.
Princess Adele is offered to the Heir to Flanders in an attempt to improve relations. It is accepted and Adele and Baldwin are married.
Those that return from le Reconquete are encouraged to leave the rural areas of France and instead move to cities and towns to work as craftsmen. Similarly, fleeing Jews from Iberia are encouraged to take up positions as bankers, administrators, and doctors. The economy improves markedly.
The building of Le College de Paris begins in 1029.
War is officially declared on the Sultanate of Cordoba.
An alliance is formed with England, solidifying their friendship and ensuring their control of Europe.
The Pope affirms that any serf that fights to spread Catholicism to Iberia will be guaranteed their own place in Heaven.

    Kingdom of Poland – SniperComZero
    State Religion: Catholicism

A terrifying new siege device appears in Poland: The Trebusz. The device flings projectiles up to 350lbs (160kg) at enemy fortifications, breaking down walls with relative ease.
Crossbows begin replacing traditional bows due to their increased accuracy and the ease of training crossbowmen. Cavalry brigades are created and used to great effect. The main body of the Polish armies draw enemies in while the cavalry slips behind and slams into the exposed flank of the enemy force.
Copying the French, the Polish establish an annual meeting with nobles.
A small tax is enacted for alcohol, displeasing the drunkards but quite pleasing their wives.
Villages are now able to maintain a small militia, allowing at least for the delay of the demise of the people in the cities.
Mott-and-Bailey castles begin to dot the countryside.
The provinces to the east are offered protection for their fealty. Most refuse but the armies of the Polish do well to change their minds later.
Trade agreements are offered to the Pechenegs, Danish, and Germans of the Holy Roman Empire. All agree earnestly and the economy of Poland improves at an incredible rate to the point that they quickly become the economic powerhouse of the region.
Bolesław I Chrobry is crowned the first king of Poland.
