Marine archaeologists have released never-before-seen photos and video of an ancient Egyptian city swallowed by the sea

A little ironic for an Egyptian city. If anything, it should be buried in sand.

I think I may have heard of Thonis-Heracleion before, but these pictures are literally making me orgasm.

The best part is the intact stele that literally names the place it was installed at, allowing us to know exactly what the site was called.

It really is amazing realizing how little we know about our own planet. For all we know, there could be many more of these across the world.

Nice boobshot you alleged archeological professionals.

Really though, These are some Fantastic findings, all these things are in fantastic shape. I wonder what they could find if they started digging up the seafloor.

It sank around 700 AD, they weren't around for this. (The city is even named for Hercules because it was an important port for Greek ships traveling to Egypt.)

    you mean Heracles?
not to be a dick, I know it's just his Roman name but the city was called Heracleion, after all

also, the stele. commissioned in 378 BC but the rest of the city was built in the 2nd century BC? were they planning on building a city in >80 years time and foresaw that it would need a commemoration?

does the stele say it specifically was commissioned in 378, or is it maybe in reference to the city? like some pharaoh said "AND THERE WILL BE A TEMPLE BUILT HERE" and sixty years later it was still on the to-do list

From the Wikipedia article it sounds like the Greeks named it. It also says the city was known about since at least the 12th century BC, so that might explain the stele.
