Whoever stole some discarded equipment from outside a pathology lab may have gotten more than he or she bargained for.

Orlando police say the equipment, worth about $500,000, is contaminated with a substance that could eat away at human skin.

A pickup hauling a trailer pulled up to Florida Hospital Center for Diagnostic Pathology, 2855 N. Orange Ave., on May 3 and took the equipment from an enclosed area near a large garbage bin, police said. The theft was not reported until Friday, said St. Vince Ogburn, a police spokesman.

Because medical waste can infect people. Syringes might poke the garbage man and give the bloke something nasty, or medical waste in skips might infect some animal which goes around biting people and animals. That shit is carefully handled, transported then gets incinerated or irradiated at specially-designed medical waste disposal facilities.

Not really, I would've assumed no one would be dumb enough to go near medical waste, never mind steal it.

Hospitals usually have someone else handle their waste, it must've been stolen some time between being left out and when it was supposed to picked up.

Because medical waste needs to be properly disposed of, you can't just dump it in with your regular trash.

Perhaps it was sterile, but the sealed container within the equipment contained the bacteria? Maybe the equipment was being sent off to be properly sterilized/destroyed

It was taken from an ENCLOSED area. That doesn't mean it was 'just left out'. For all we know, they hadn't finished processing it yet.

    Just noticed:
Investigators ask anyone with information about the case to call the police or Fire Department.
    Why the fire department..?
"Uhh hey we saw the thieves, they live on X avenue and appear to still have the equipment"
"Okay lets go spray some water at them"

Sounds like it might be something out of the ordinary - normal medical waste has to be sealed up the instant you stop using (like sharps bins). Maybe a patient contaminated something big like a bed or a piece of electrical equipment. I'd imagine flesh-eating bacteria generate a lot of infectious fluids and what not.

That plus, what the hell are they going to do? clean it as soon as they can as best they can? Rushing it is too risky. If it's in an enclosed area the bacteria will slowly die off by itself, THEN they can safely clean it.

I'm betting 10$ they had a warning sign in the area PLUS didn't... you know, expect some dumb ass to steal it.

I'd wager something like this was around the area. Medical facilities have pretty beefy regulations regarding contaminated equipment, there is no way that this was easily accessible. Someone who works for the hospital probably heard about it and missed the bit where its contaminated.

And the Fire Department has HazMat gear on their trucks, they'd be far more equipped to handle it than the Police would.

And I don't know where that symbol came from, but DAMN its scary.

During the design process they needed a culturally ambiguous symbol that can easily be stenciled and has no implied meaning and can be recognized immediately. That is what was the best choice.

I don't see where everyone is getting the flesh eating bacteria from, it just says, "...is contaminated with a substance that could eat away at human skin." For all we know, it could just be some mildly potent acid they use in these machines for tests. Seems pretty sensational.

Many fire departments have squads and equipment that are used for dealing with infectious diseases and other HazMat situations.

    Edited:

Even though it's unlikely that it's a infectious disease and probably has traces of corrosive substances on the equipment, infectious equipment typically isn't left outside.

So, from what I understand... This facility improperly disposed of medical equipment contaminated with flesh eating bacteria. Then some thieves stole it. And because the facility improperly disposed of it, they waited a couple days before reporting the theft to avoid any legal repercussions that may fall upon their facility. Am I right?

Or acid. As the thread title is a bit misleading.

For exactly this reason, numbnuts. Now, because it wasn't sterilized, they have access to flesh eating bacteria (which can be used as a terrorist weapon, obviously), when if they were sterilized, the theives would have broken, useless equipment instead of weapons of mass murder.

    Edited:

Also we need to find these guys because this is now an actual threat to the world.
Not really. The article doesn't say it's a flesh-eating bacteria, just the title of the thread, which is fucking retarded because IT'S NOT FLESH-EATING BACTERIA. It just says a "substance that could eat away at human skin," which could be anything. Acid, bacteria, biohazardous wastes. Anything.
