da fuk, page king again
"Did Black Mesa invent the HEV suits, and were they superior to Aperture Science?"
"I assume this question is triggered by the Portal 2 comic. They put some stuff in there as a tribute to HL but I wouldn't sweat it too much. Black Mesa had them first because we made Half-Life first. This stuff percolates through the other games. I think the TF2 heavy weapons guys shows up in an L4D comic but that doesn't necessarily mean the TF2 team is out there fighting zombies (although come to think of it, that would be cool!)."
Also I always thought the L4D universe was set in a more "real" timeline then say the Portal/Half-Life universe. We have the Heavy statue in the comic, Ellis and his "Hey this is just like Team Fortress 2" line, and finally Louis' "Man I feel just like Gordon Freeman." All of the these lines indicate that Valve as a video game company is present in the L4D universe. Then again I could be just reading into things too much and they are really just some fun easter eggs.
But hey we would not be Valve fans if we didn't overanalyze every now would we?
Aperture only had that stuff because it was willing to think outside the box. If they had followed normal procedures they wouldn't have had that stuff. GLaDOS didn't invent anything. Cave is not a recording, he is brought back to life - read the old ARG.
GLaDOS does count as Aperture, as she was built to carry on research. They planned for the Apocolpse. Atlas and P-body might have been built by GLaDOS but Aperture built the Party Escort bot, Personality Cores etc
Scientists are not because they are lazy. Has Valve been lazy with anything else before?
While you are right about Half life being an older game so they can't show as much, the only thing we have to base the two companies on is ingame stuff.
Cave was a billionaire, so it didn't matter so much about not getting as much funding as Black Mesa.
The more gameplays I watch the more I am afraid I won't be able to run it.
God damn it.
How can i pass the time till portal 2 i have already beaten portal 5 times since last week
"1998 – The untested AI is activated for the first time as one of the planned activities on Aperture’s first annual bring-your-daughter-to-work day. In many ways, the initial test goes well: Within one picosecond of being switched on, GLaDOS becomes self-aware. The "going well" phase lasts for two more picoseconds, at which point GLaDOS takes control of the facility, locks everyone inside, and begins a permanent cycle of testing. Her goal: beat the hated Black Mesa in the race to develop a functioning portal technology. Days later, that race is lost when Black Mesa successfully deploys an interdimensional gate through which an alien race emerges and effectively ends the outside world."
Yeah, real succesful. I even linked to this earlier. Here's what we can deduct from this: Aperture Science invented Glados so she could invent portal technology, meaning that we have confirmation that Glados did invent portals, and Atlas and P-Body. So far, the only confirmed things that Aperture science have invented (before Glados) is a murderous AI, and perhaps light bridges, gel and panels and robots (although those might as well have been developed by Glados).
And yes, Glados does count as Aperture Science, but not after the freakin' end of the world where it's not even a company any longer (and Black Mesa is a crater in the desert).
And yes, Valve has been lazy with everything they have ever made, and they reuse game assets whenever they can get away with it. You know why? Because otherwise it's a waste of time and money. It would have been a waste of time to take a picture of two new scientist dudes if you already had a picture with plenty of scientists, and when it wouldn't matter how the scientists they re-used looked, because they would only be seen for 1 second.
Anyway, we still know that Black Mesa was at least as succesful, if not more, than Aperture Science. They were rivals and Black Mesa won (and ended the world). Black Mesa knew what they were doing, and Aperture did crazy science. You can pick your preference, but Black Mesa was still more successful.
Portal will be opened in 3.. 2... 1..
You are basing Black Mesa being more successful on things which aren't shown in the game. From the things ingame, Aperture was more successful.
It wouldn't even matter if GLaDOS finished the Portal gun. It still meant Aperture made it.
fuck fuck fuck
Winds blowing like shit today and thus we're having some electricity problems..
Well and here I am sitting on my PC when the lights start flickering and my pc loses power and continously struggles to turn on few times. Saw a cloud of fog coming out of the case as I quickly plugged the power cable out. Fuuck hopefully it was just dust from the fan.. God fucking damn it. If my pc dies on me now and I won't get to play this I am gonna be fucking mad.
Not turning it on till the electricity gets steadier.
Also all parts are just warm and the whole computer is in a safety socket so I hope everythongs fine.
okay tried starting it up... Everything seems to be normal but I just let it boot to the win welcome screen and turned it off again.. Well there was some message displayed alongside a single beep but it dissapeared too fast. Said just something about unsuccesful booting I think. Cannot smell anything burnt neither so hopefully I am fine
i am sure it did not overheat. I keep my case open at all times otherwise the graphic card would not fit and from a touch of a hand it is not over 35 celsius. Posting from my phone.
And it feeling 35c on the outside doesn't actually mean it's 35c on the inside, and these things usually get cold pretty fast as well.
I wouldn't rule out an overheat, but what do I know eh?
Solely from exploring the facility in Half-Life, we know that they did all of the following (and I totally stole the text):
Black Mesa undertakes research in various fields from standard scientific research to radiation, rocketry, theoretical physics, lasers, experimental propulsion, hydraulics, robotics, hydroelectricity, genetics, zoology, applied mathematics and a very wide spectrum of research into chemistry and all manner of physics research.
The thing is, Black Mesa was an actual huge company which worked on a variety of differant subjects. Aperture was set up by 1 person to pretty much just work on what he wanted. It wasn't an actual Scientific research facilty, it was more like cave's toybox. They did what he wanted.
That quote says "Her goal: beat the hated Black Mesa in the race to develop a functioning portal technology. Days later, that race is lost when Black Mesa successfully deploys an interdimensional gate through which an alien race emerges and effectively ends the outside world." which means Black Mesa won the race to Portal Technology was the Resonace cascade, which wouldn't have occured if the G-man hadn't brought in a sabotaged sample. Portal/the ARG shows Aperture had working a Portal gun for some time - or had atleast been working on it. Large areas of the facility were built just for use with the Portal gun.
There is also the new Portal 2 investment videos which shows they were atleast selling Pannels and Turrets. The Bot Trust video might mean they were selling/had robots all along, but that may be non-canon.
It's just Erik Wolpaw (Portal's writer, just in case you didn't know) that's a little rusty on his knowledge of the Half-Life storyline (or maybe he just didn't care, he also listed it as happening in 1998, but Marc Laidlaw pointed out the flaw); the text was just to show that Black Mesa did invent it first.
Aperture lost the race because of the Resonance Cascade. That was the Portal they created. They had been to Xen before, but they didn't actually create a portal which could easily be manipulated like what happened with the Crystal sample. They basically bridged the Gap between the two dimensions.
It probably has been worded incorrectly though.
It's been a while since i've played Half life, but i will play through it again later today.
Anyways, Portal 2 is out soon so i guess we will find out more then.
Okay, everything seems to be in order now. Phew. Sorry for the off-topic.
Here's the new footage. Sorry, but I don't have a capture card.
I'm sorry but it's annoying...
New footage is good though.
