Who else saw the Half Life secrets in the comic on page #14?
The gravity gun and the H.E.V Suit charger?

    Edited:

    Oh and the healer.

    Edited:

Aww, i am always late, first time reading it tho.
Regarding this, and the discussion we had earlier about Black Mesa versus Aperture Science (yeah it was nerdy), I emailed Marc Laidlaw about this, and he confirmed it as a tribute to HL (and then he assumed I was some kind of idiot by making an analogy to Heavy in the L4D comic) but anyway:

"Did Black Mesa invent the HEV suits, and were they superior to Aperture Science?"

"I assume this question is triggered by the Portal 2 comic. They put some stuff in there as a tribute to HL but I wouldn't sweat it too much. Black Mesa had them first because we made Half-Life first. This stuff percolates through the other games. I think the TF2 heavy weapons guys shows up in an L4D comic but that doesn't necessarily mean the TF2 team is out there fighting zombies (although come to think of it, that would be cool!)."

So I guess its safe to say all that stuff was a bunch of easter eggs. Badass but nothing to do with Portal 2, EP3, or the ARG

Also I always thought the L4D universe was set in a more "real" timeline then say the Portal/Half-Life universe. We have the Heavy statue in the comic, Ellis and his "Hey this is just like Team Fortress 2" line, and finally Louis' "Man I feel just like Gordon Freeman." All of the these lines indicate that Valve as a video game company is present in the L4D universe. Then again I could be just reading into things too much and they are really just some fun easter eggs.

But hey we would not be Valve fans if we didn't overanalyze every now would we?

    Edited:

    No spoilers. At all.
Yeah the video is spoiler safe. They didn't even get into the co-op storyline.

All those technologies are only known because they’re vital to the gameplay. If there was a second game with Black Mesa in it, we would have seen more inventions from them, or if more advanced inventions would have suited Half-Life’s gameplay better (not to mention that you seem to forget they invented the anti-mass spectrometer, multiple teleporters, including a giant one, before Aperture Science did it, big robots, HEV suits, autonomous turrets etc).

As a matter of fact, it seems clear that Aperture spent their time inventing robots, AI and portal technology (and panels). I would bet that the other ones are invented by Glados. Not to mention that there's a chance that Cave is a recording.

Not to mention that Half-Life was made in a much simpler time, videogame wise.

And yes, the government funding is clear evidence that Black Mesa got more results, you don’t have a research facility on government contract for 30+ years if you don’t get results. It would be naive to assume that they had only managed to invent three things in the course of at least thirty years.
They’re supposed to be the most advanced research facility on the planet, in the game universe, hence why the writers of Portal see their rivalry as “snobs versus slobs”, with Aperture Science being the slobs.

Also, there’s no knowing how many of those Aperture Science inventions were made by Glados after the resonance cascade (the co-op robots are, that’s a confirmed one), since her only purpose was to keep researching and developing. And Glados hardly counts as Aperture Science after the company itself has ceased to exist.

And yes, the scientists lazy copy-pastes. They’re not a big deal. Occam’s razor. If Valve were somehow hinting that Aperture Science had spies in Black Mesa, Valve would make a bigger deal out of it, you don’t just introduce plot elements like that and leave them unsolved (and no, it wouldn’t be solved in Episode 3 since Black Mesa is a finished chapter, it wouldn't fit anywhere
Nothing even suggests that Black Mesa had anything like that in the 4 games that have been made. It is just a generic research facility with a few hi-tech weapons/prototypes and testing equipment. They did have autonomous turrets (only good they did was shooting their own staff), HEV suits and large robots (which could have just been pre-programmed) but those are not real achievements like the light bridges and unstationary scaffold are.

Aperture only had that stuff because it was willing to think outside the box. If they had followed normal procedures they wouldn't have had that stuff. GLaDOS didn't invent anything. Cave is not a recording, he is brought back to life - read the old ARG.

GLaDOS does count as Aperture, as she was built to carry on research. They planned for the Apocolpse. Atlas and P-body might have been built by GLaDOS but Aperture built the Party Escort bot, Personality Cores etc

Scientists are not because they are lazy. Has Valve been lazy with anything else before?

While you are right about Half life being an older game so they can't show as much, the only thing we have to base the two companies on is ingame stuff.

Cave was a billionaire, so it didn't matter so much about not getting as much funding as Black Mesa.

Nothing suggests that they had what? The inventions that I mentioned? Those were all from Half-Life. And yes, Black Mesa did beat Aperture Science in the teleportation race:

"1998 – The untested AI is activated for the first time as one of the planned activities on Aperture’s first annual bring-your-daughter-to-work day. In many ways, the initial test goes well: Within one picosecond of being switched on, GLaDOS becomes self-aware. The "going well" phase lasts for two more picoseconds, at which point GLaDOS takes control of the facility, locks everyone inside, and begins a permanent cycle of testing. Her goal: beat the hated Black Mesa in the race to develop a functioning portal technology. Days later, that race is lost when Black Mesa successfully deploys an interdimensional gate through which an alien race emerges and effectively ends the outside world."

Yeah, real succesful. I even linked to this earlier. Here's what we can deduct from this: Aperture Science invented Glados so she could invent portal technology, meaning that we have confirmation that Glados did invent portals, and Atlas and P-Body. So far, the only confirmed things that Aperture science have invented (before Glados) is a murderous AI, and perhaps light bridges, gel and panels and robots (although those might as well have been developed by Glados).

They did have autonomous turrets (only good they did was shooting their own staff), HEV suits and large robots (which could have just been pre-programmed) but those are not real achievements like the light bridges and unstationary scaffold are.

Sciensts are not because they are lazy. Has Valve been lazy with anything else before?
At this point it's obvious that you're basing this off your own preference of Aperture Science, you're not even arguing about what we can use from the games to measure how advanced they are, but what you think about their inventions. Thinking outside the box, we can't use that information for anything.

And yes, Glados does count as Aperture Science, but not after the freakin' end of the world where it's not even a company any longer (and Black Mesa is a crater in the desert).

And yes, Valve has been lazy with everything they have ever made, and they reuse game assets whenever they can get away with it. You know why? Because otherwise it's a waste of time and money. It would have been a waste of time to take a picture of two new scientist dudes if you already had a picture with plenty of scientists, and when it wouldn't matter how the scientists they re-used looked, because they would only be seen for 1 second.

Anyway, we still know that Black Mesa was at least as succesful, if not more, than Aperture Science. They were rivals and Black Mesa won (and ended the world). Black Mesa knew what they were doing, and Aperture did crazy science. You can pick your preference, but Black Mesa was still more successful.

    fuck fuck fuck
Winds blowing like shit today and thus we're having some electricity problems..
Well and here I am sitting on my PC when the lights start flickering and my pc loses power and continously struggles to turn on few times. Saw a cloud of fog coming out of the case as I quickly plugged the power cable out. Fuuck hopefully it was just dust from the fan.. God fucking damn it. If my pc dies on me now and I won't get to play this I am gonna be fucking mad.

Not turning it on till the electricity gets steadier.
Also all parts are just warm and the whole computer is in a safety socket so I hope everythongs fine.

Keeping your case open doesn't mean it's well ventilated. In some cases it can actually screw up the airflow.

And it feeling 35c on the outside doesn't actually mean it's 35c on the inside, and these things usually get cold pretty fast as well.

I wouldn't rule out an overheat, but what do I know eh?

It wouldn't even matter if GLaDOS finished the Portal gun. It still meant Aperture made it.
I still listed a number of things that Black Mesa invented. Anti-mass spectrometer, the Lambda Core teleporters, a number of experimental weapons, HEV suits, long-jump modules (which they invented specifically for exploring Xen), robots and high energy lasers that can burn through thick concrete walls. And they researched alien life.

Solely from exploring the facility in Half-Life, we know that they did all of the following (and I totally stole the text):
Black Mesa undertakes research in various fields from standard scientific research to radiation, rocketry, theoretical physics, lasers, experimental propulsion, hydraulics, robotics, hydroelectricity, genetics, zoology, applied mathematics and a very wide spectrum of research into chemistry and all manner of physics research.

You are saying Aperture didn't invent some of the stuff because GLaDOS helped. The G-man brought in the Crystal sample, does that mean Black Mesa didn't open a portal? If he didn't do that, Aperture would have won.
Glados developed it after Black Mesa was gone; it was a hole in the desert. The world's population was moving into cities under military protection because alien life was taking over. Aperture Science wasn't a company anymore, it was just Glados and her test subjects. And the crystal sample that G-Man delivered didn't have anything to do with teleportation, it was a Xen crystal they needed to analyze in the anti-mass spectrometer (although sabotaged somehow so it triggered a special connection with Nihilanth that allowed him to teleport his soldiers into Black Mesa). They had already gone to Xen, and been there for some time, as seen in Half-Life.

Fair enough, they did invent those things (or atleast their own versions) but Apertures inventions were more of an achievement then those. What we know Aperture was doing: Teleportation, invisibility, AI, Portal technology.

The thing is, Black Mesa was an actual huge company which worked on a variety of differant subjects. Aperture was set up by 1 person to pretty much just work on what he wanted. It wasn't an actual Scientific research facilty, it was more like cave's toybox. They did what he wanted.

That quote says "Her goal: beat the hated Black Mesa in the race to develop a functioning portal technology. Days later, that race is lost when Black Mesa successfully deploys an interdimensional gate through which an alien race emerges and effectively ends the outside world." which means Black Mesa won the race to Portal Technology was the Resonace cascade, which wouldn't have occured if the G-man hadn't brought in a sabotaged sample. Portal/the ARG shows Aperture had working a Portal gun for some time - or had atleast been working on it. Large areas of the facility were built just for use with the Portal gun.

There is also the new Portal 2 investment videos which shows they were atleast selling Pannels and Turrets. The Bot Trust video might mean they were selling/had robots all along, but that may be non-canon.

So far, the only confirmed things that Aperture science have invented (before Glados) is a murderous AI, and perhaps light bridges, gel and panels and robots (although those might as well have been developed by Glados).
Going to go back to what you said earlier. They also had the Gels, Emancipation grids and Unstationary Scaffolds before GLaDOS was turned on. They are in the Cave chambers, and the Grids and Scaffolds are on the Borealis.

Black Mesa went to Xen before the Resonance Cascade, it's unknown for how long they did it though, but it's all seen in Half-Life 1. And the crystal wasn't needed for teleportation, they were just going to analyze it, but it somehow tore a hole in the dimensional fabric (fancy eh) when inserted into the anti-mass spectrometer, and thus allowed Nihilanth to invade.

It's just Erik Wolpaw (Portal's writer, just in case you didn't know) that's a little rusty on his knowledge of the Half-Life storyline (or maybe he just didn't care, he also listed it as happening in 1998, but Marc Laidlaw pointed out the flaw); the text was just to show that Black Mesa did invent it first.

Inside Xbox has a Portal 2 interview with some new footage such as when Wheatley wakes up GLaDOS. Unfortunately, I can't record it because I have no capture card.
Any more word on this? Seems interesting.

Aperture lost the race because of the Resonance Cascade. That was the Portal they created. They had been to Xen before, but they didn't actually create a portal which could easily be manipulated like what happened with the Crystal sample. They basically bridged the Gap between the two dimensions.

It probably has been worded incorrectly though.

It's been a while since i've played Half life, but i will play through it again later today.

Anyways, Portal 2 is out soon so i guess we will find out more then.
