    Title says all, whats the most painless way to reinstall windows 7, keeping files/programs installed in tact

    install over current install, pull files from windows.old in the root directory.

    Install it without reformatting. All your shit goes into a folder (windows.old) which you can copy/paste back.

    Don't reformat. If you don't want the previous installation, run disk cleanup and remove the 11GB worth of old windows installations.

    But files/shortcuts and shit, if I overwrite the current windows with files from windows.old, will programs still work properly?

    If they don't, whats another method I can use?

    Copy them back.

    No. You install windows without reformatting. It's a whole lot easier. Copy your shit back from windows.old.

    So if I backup my registry, and add back all the old program files, then all my programs will be completely in tact?

    Yeah. Just put 'em back where they were and create some shortcuts from the .exes.

    That's what I do though.
