This may sound stupid but i never understood why MMOs cost money to constantly play, I mean your just playing on one big server so why don't you have to pay monthly fees for games like call of duty 4+5 and team fortress 2 where they use lots of servers?

Server costs, MMOs don't have private, dedicated servers like normal multiplayer games.

Its not one big server, its a LOT of servers. For one I know for eve that each ingame "region"' is calc'd by one server each.
It helps them cover maintenance, but really it makes them even more money still.

^ Above, and plus why would you want to pay monthly fees for games like those titles? That'd be horrible.

For some reason people got used to pay for MMOs. And no, server running costs aren't by any chance high enough to warrant 15$/month.
Even 1$/month would still leave a game like WoW with a profit.

wow makes enough money off of other shit. However what the fuck would the purpose be if they weren't able to make most money possible? The 15$/month keeps devs happy and the need for investors at a minimum

I am pretty sure that the investors get 90% and the devs get a minimal share of the money.

As said before the main reason is for maintenance and extra profit. One thing people neglect to think about though is updates and expansion. WoW is constantly updated and bugs are fixed as soon as possible. A lot of this is due to the big team they can afford to pay to fix these problems, the income they have at disposal allows them to run the game as they like.

Another important factor is expansion, and no I do not mean expansion as in expansion pack. As an MMO gains popularity, the servers they have now will continue to be populated. There comes a point when it is time to expand and buy new servers to allow for more players to connect and have fun. If WoW kept the number of servers they had the same since launch, it wouldn't be nearly as big as it is now.

Well a common mmo needs alot of powerful servers, not quite as much power per player as call of duty or garrysmod since most movement is client-side but that makes up for loads of server usage, they do not just need good servers they also need the internet connection for them, they need about 3000-5000GB per server with a normal world running up to 20 in the case of fantasy mmos.

In WoW the movement IS clientside. The casts are serverside, but that's barely noticeable load in these days computing.

you really don't know what you're talking about

anyway, generally it's just the vast amount of players that are on at any one time. we don't need to pay to play other games like garry's mod because the community hosts those servers and it's a different type of game, mmos require the developers to host the servers for many reasons and that amount of players isn't exactly easy on them. that and also the fact that MMOs are constantly being worked on, new content is being released and you gotta pay their wages somehow
