I've been wondering whether my CPM is low. I hear people brag that their CPM is $20 and it makes me wonder.

Obviously - if they aren't getting much traffic it makes sense that their CPM seems high, because it hasn't scaled out. You need at least 1000 hits to have it make sense.

That said, here's my numbers from February:

Facepunch Forums:
Hits: 16,634,274
Clicks: 3,654
eCPM: 0.03
Earnings: 467.36
garrysmod.org:
Hits: 25,512,430
Clicks: 10,714
eCPM: 0.05
Earnings: 1182.68
Is this pretty normal? People lead me to believe that with those kind of hits I should be making money hand over fist - but that's obviously not my experience.

Could be because most people who visit have ad blockers.

I earn like 10 dollar, not much. Those stats seem pretty normal to me though.
And almost everyone uses AdBlocker these days too.

CPM of around 0.05 to 0.13 is around average for a site the size of Facepunch and garrysmod.org. If you want to increase this, you really ought to think about optimising your advertisements more.

This may be in the form of new placement (IE placing advertisements between posts to increase visibility and user interaction) or in the form of more relevant advertisement. The latter is only really achievable by using a different ad serving company.

Another intelligent thing to do might be to figure out what kind of advertising agency pays best for what traffic. It's a known fact that google ads perform well for US based traffic, but perform a lot worse for traffic from the UK and europe. What you could do is filter out your traffic, and serve people from different countries with ads from a different agency. It's all about trial and error and figuring out what pays best :)

[EDIT]
You may also want to consider different forms of advertising that banner ads. On Garrysmod.org, you could force a user to play a small video advertisement before they download a file. That would probably increase your earnings massively.

Most people I believe choose to block the ads, not because they are ads, but because they are usually very ugly.

Yeah, those numbers seem a fair bit lower than you'd expect. But again, it's because of Adblocking. Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Opera all have it.

Thanks aaron, that makes a lot of sense (and a lot more useful than the idiots above you).

I'm sure things like popups, and videos blocking the download would hugely increase revenue - but I'm keen to avoid annoyances like that.

I can definitely understand that. Maybe something like serving a video advertisement for every third file a user downloads? Or maybe even make it so that once the video starts playing the download automatically starts? That way, you aren't blocking the user from downloading the file and you'll still be making revenue on each download.

Why do you even care so much Garry, you make very little off ads and they're mostly an annoyance. Besides, most people have adblock enabled (as do I.)

The amounts you stated seem pretty bang on, as aaron said the UK's ads via googleads aint as google as the US, how about just normal text link ads?

I find some ads annoying and ugly but I've learnt to mentally block them out while I'm surfing, BUT google's text ads DO make me read them as they as not always obvious ads, also what about referal links via google ads, the ones where you click them to buy or download something, maybe some relevant links of these could be good, ie hosting referals in the computer sections and music referals in the music secion?

Even so, I've like to make that kinda money from just ads.

P.S. I dont use ad-block as its unfair to block adverts from sites you like and use regularly.

P.S.S sorry for the back spelling, my mind is dead so fuck you grammar nazi's!

I don't get why people would block the ads on FP - it's just a small banner at the bottom of the page.

Garry, what stopped you from selling banners on facepunch?

I remember for a short time you did this and there appeared to be quite a few buyers (or am I mistaken). You could try and do that again. Charge a flat monthly fee for one particular spot on the forums and just sell that space to users. This could allow you to keep your current ads and get some extra money?

If Garry did that again, I may be interested in buying an advert, mainly because the community I'm thinking about would get most of its playerbase from Facepunch - it being a Garrysmod community and all.

Hey yeah, sounds like a good idea to put up a banner space and start renting it. Even if it was for something like 3$ for an hour or something, I think there would be lots of people wanting that space.

Good move on making adblock block the regular images and css by default Garry. It should make some people turn off their adblock. Though if they know what they are doing it is easy to get around, but my bet is that most people won't and will just disable it for FP as it is easier and you don't put the ads in places where they get in the way. Another option would be one of those VB plugins that put ads into each thread in a post under the OP but that might be counter productive and annoying.

Someone would just make a GreaseMonkey script to hide it.

Disable adblock on facepunch and just use noscript :P. In fact the only reason I still use adblock is because it blocks flash ads.

But ya... Garry, you should sell banner space.
