Think about it.
The Black Mesa Incedent happened when he was 27- Alyx just a baby.
Gordon meets alyx as an adult. Making gordon in his mid-40's, right?

Not only was there a picture of her in Gordon's locker, but remember the picture at Black Mesa East? It was Alyx as a baby, taken before the Resonance Cascade.

As we know, time is relative and nonlinear. This means that it bends and can be bent. The diagram is actually a very bad example, because it makes it seem as if we're bending reality, but we are, in fact, simply moving two points closer to each other. The "reality loop" represents the actual passing of time, whereas the "point of stasis" represents the bridge between two times. We can use this point of stasis to go from earlier time to later time faster than reality. If you don't get it, watch Deja Vu. They have a very good analogy in it.

Isn't Half-Life 2 set in mid-Cold War era (1950s-1990s) USSR? I've always thought the game was set in the 1950s.

in the manual for Half Life, it has a letter to Gordon saying that he has been accepted into Black Mesa. the date read May somethingth, 200X, meaning it took place between 2000 and 2009.
