I've been looking for a while and it seems the only decent ones I can find is the Logitech G51. The Z5500 is too expensive for my budget. Are there any other 5.1 systems that I could get cheap?

    Thanks

I was looking at the 540's but their a bit cheap, I can get those for under $100, I want something better than that. I think I'll probably get the G51.

Sounds decent enough. Unless you're an audiophile. I hear no low quality though. Woofer is small but oh boy does it pump bass.

I scored my X-540's for $90AU a while back. I'm not fussed on speaker sound quality (Headphones are a different story!) but damn these things are *great* for the price!

I'm picking up some X-540's today, so I wanted to see where this thread was going. To be a jew, (i'm not) I'm going to buy the speakers refurbished, but they're like 40$ off, which brings to total price to 49$.

It feels like the bass is "correct". It isn't too little and it isn't overpowering but can still pack a punch if you're trying to bring the windows down. I've also had a mate of mine say basically the same thing first time he heard them, which is obviously a good sign :P

I can also see where the OP's coming from when he says they don't look like much. In all honesty though, the way I've got them set up, I never notice the speakers themselves.

My X-530's sub is incredibly powerful for its size.

I forgot to mention one thing though, the only thing that really annoys me about the X-540's is a lack of dual input headphone jacks.

I run a line from my PC and TV at the same time and using a headphone splitter means that one will "automatically" get put to half volume. Right now I've got my PC at the main line so the matrix button will allow it to come out all the speakers. The TV is in the middle jack so when the speakers aren't in matrix mode, they'll come out the back speakers which are seated below the TV.

Preferrably, I want to use matrix mode (A 2.1 input goes to all 5.1) for both the TV and PC.

If you have a semi-decent sound card, I'd actually recommend getting the Turtlebeach HPA2 true 5.1 surround sound headset instead of speakers.
The sound quality is great, there's accurate surround sound placement, and the bass feedback is AMAZING. Or, if you want, you could invest in a 7.1 headset.
Most games and movies do not support it yet, so you'd only be using it as a 5.1 headset, but it'd be much cheaper than buying a 5.1 headset or speakers and then buying
another 7.1 to replace your 5.1 in a few years.

Edit: Oh, they're $100. Best investment I've made in a while

Ok so I ended up getting the X-540's. They sound absolutely amazing. But does anyone have any decent EQ settings for them? Just a general all around good setting.

That depends on whether you have a frequency response chart.

Do use proper speaker placement lest I'll have to hunt you silly. :P
