I've just finished reading the Zombie Survival guide by Max Brookes (I highly recommend reading it) and I had an idea that I'm sure many people have had, a zombie survival MMO.
Not just a crappy text or browser based one, an actual full game. The main objective of the game not being simply killing zombies but to survive in this world. Things like scavenging, trading, finding shelter and building barricades and camps, or even zombie hunting would all be part of it.
What do you think? Anything you guys would want to see in a Zombie survival MMO?

Yea I read somewhere it got canceled back in October 08.

    Edited:

3rd or 1st person? Having both and making it optional would be ideal, but if you had to choose?
    I'd go with 1st person.

I think the whole Zombie idea is over played. Every game now has zombies in it, it is kind of the lazy way out of finishing a game it seems.

Well in FPS's maybe but there currently isn't a game which you can do all the things I mentioned in.
A zombie survival game would be different from the usual zombie shooter games.

Howe would spawn/save points work? How about when you find a safe zone, you can set it as your respawn area, and if that area is lost, then the respawn point gets changed back to an arbitrary area, like an army held city.

What about purges? Where the army comes in, players get a choice of a good gun and plenty of ammo, and you get enlisted to clear zombies out of a particular spot, which in turn allows the area to be safer and more people can enter to make sanctuaries, shops and other stuff. And if players don't help, the operation may fail and the army will be temporarily weakened and zombie opulation may grow.

Or exodus's, where the zombie population go out of control in a town or province, and everyone has to leave in trucks or on foot, and players have to defend the convoy as it rolls along, if there are no players to help, the defenders may be overwhelmed and the convoy takes damage.

Just ideas to consider, now if only the game was ever made...

I have (wrote) a few-page document illustrating a Zombie MMO and all of its gameplay mechanics. If I had staff, I'd get to work.

They aren't zombie survival, they're zombie shooters.

    Edited:

What we're looking for is a game where the goal is to survive in a zombie apocalypse, scavenging for food/valuables, building camps, trading. That kind of stuff.

    Edited:

Oh and hunting zombies and such, but that's already in heaps of games

That's almost exactly what it is. A true SURVIVAL game, not a run n' gun shooter, with more complex systems.
I don't want to disclose information, for fear of losing my unprotected ideas.

And about the ideas, surely there's some of it that isn't top secret. How about just the basics?

Essentially, it's open world, and focuses a bit more on survival-horror. Third Person chase camera with Over-The-Shoulder aiming system, and a First-Person-Optional examination system. Semi-Class based with focus on cooperation (players are rewarded for managing groups, such as health regeneration or a speed boost, depending on classes and levels).

I would like to see first person zombie shooter rpg. RPG as in similar to stalker.
I think third person doesn't give you the same feel, I am not a fan of 3rd person horror games where I see character getting eaten and not zombies jumping in my face and eating me.

It's an MMO, not a story-driven singleplayer experience. If Silent Hill was first person, it wouldn't be survival horror.

I would say the closest thing to what has been described in the thread is STALKER. But even this is not centered around zombies.

First person games are usually associated with action. If Silent Hill was first person, it wouldn't be nearly as creepy, and fighting enemies wouldn't be such an endeavour.

Hey lets remember that making this multiplayer would be so much better. The trading and scavagingm, zomb hunting with friends.

Exanimus promised this, it looked like the best bet, but then the economy failed and they had to shut down, atleast that was their excuse.

I'd go for a 1st person myself or optional.
I hope a game company realizes how many people would go for a zombie survival mmo and makes one. Either that or a dedicated group makes it, though it would probably be of a lower quality with less players.

Or you could use a function like in Fallout 3 where the player decides if he or she wants it to be 1st or 3rd person.
I personally don't see a difference in the horror element in a game from 1st to 3rd person. Stuff still jumps out you still shit your pants.... Same thing. Besides, many games have the ability to go first person. Whenever I think over the shoulder games I think RE.... And if we want to make something new we can't make it look or feel like a pre-existing game.
I vote for the ability to make the camera angle whatever the player wants it to be.

Oh, and there have been several threads (In the past) on true zombie SURVIVAL games, and tons and tons of good ideas and actual game mechanics were proposed.

i always wanted a zombie game where you played as a sorta messenger- scout running across rooftops in the apocalypse, taking survivors to a camp and bringing back resources.

Another thing could be that zombies wouldn't go out in the day, so in the middle of the day, they would go inside, and that could work as some sort of a dungeon talking in "wow-language", and during the night they would come out, I'd think it would break some repetetiveness. Anyway I don't see this being done.

Why would they go and hide in the day? We aren't talking about I am legend type of "vampires"

I know, that was exactly what I was thinking about, just thought it would be a good way of varying the gameplay, kinda like theme parkish where you get to choose what to do and where to go, and in the night you're just gonna be running and trying to stay alive.

    You can try Dead Frontier

Not really a MMO in the traditional sense, it's a singleplayer/multiplayer (you can choose which you want to play) game with a global economy.

For a free game, its probably the best you can find, though.

Oddly addictive. A bit of a learning curve, though.
