I have an ipod touch 2nd gen. I haven't upgraded to the latest os though for it. But i always really wanted to know what would i gain if i were to jailbreak my touch, i know if i ask if it's worth doing everyone will just tell me yes. I just want to know what i get if i jailbreak.

You can brick your touch, only if your stupid. also, Theres usually ways to fix it if you brick it.

Don't fuck with the directories, that usually does it, my brother did that because he thought that because he could jailbreak (few clicks with a program) he could do anything to his ipod and it will work
Also, during the Jailbreaking, DO NOT TOUCH THE IPOD UNLESS TOLD TO! that can epicly do some damage (first time jailbreaking for me=fail, second time=win)

the only reason i'm hesitant to do this is the chance of it bricking. Because although i can easily make money to buy a new one i'd really rather not.

You'd have to be really dumb to brick it so fast. If you are this worried, there are tons of tutorials on YouTube.

It's almost impossible to brick your iPod. Sure, it might go wrong but you can always restore it.

Think of Cydia as the jailbroken AppStore. Installous is the pirated AppStore.

You need to use redsn0w to jailbreak. If you really feel cheap after pirating a $1 App either delete it or buy it if you like it. Personally I'm still waiting for my warranty to expire before I jailbreak just in case something happens and I can't restore it.

You can always restore with iTunes, just put it in DFU mode.
Just use redsn0w, you have to be really dumb to fuck up when jailbreaking with an UI.

Hahaha, true. I can't even imagine what you'd need to do to not even be able to put the device back into DFU mode - even if you SSH'd in and deleted as much as you could which IMO is about the worst you can do while JB'ed.

You're talking about SFTP. SSH stands for Secure SHell, it'd be faster just to do a sudo rm -rf.

You need a SFTP client to connect to it from your PC. However, to gain that ability you need to install SSH on your device.

It works, but it makes pretty ugly text IMO. I'd distribute the PSD that I use to make mine, but you probably wouldn't have the Helvetica font.

You can get installous, It's an app were you just look up an app (it doesnt show free ones) and download it for free...
Jailbreaking is good because you can add sources in cydia. A source is a website that has thing for downloading to your ipod, be it themes or games or whatever, and you type that link into cydia and whatever is put up on that site will be in Cydia

I'm already jailbreaking, i just need to update my firmware, but i just bought a few games and i only use the itunes cards, i switched banks and the bank has this bullshit rule where i can't get a checking card until 18, while my old bank i could get one/had one. And i'm a bit strapped for about a week, i get my paycheck in like 3 days though.
But out of curiosity, what should i use to do the jailbreaking?

Is there a good place i can find a tutorial of jailbreaking? Or should i just download redsnow and follow the readme.
Also should i really upgrade to 3.0 firmware before doing this?

Not the intention, but I don't feel like messing around with Pwnagetool really :P
Upgrade to the 3.0 firmware, that's what redsn0w's designed for. After that, open the app up and follow the instructions. Be prepared to hold down the Home+Sleep/Wake button for the time that it specifies, but it allows a bit of slack so don't worry if you held something down for 8 seconds instead of 10 seconds if everything on the screen starts to change.
If you're really insecure, check out YouTube - but honestly, it's either going to work or it's going to start up your device normally.

don't upgrade to 3.0 just yet, because most of my apps and games don't work at all in 3.0 I'm sticking with 2.2.1 until 3.0 matures and apps get updated.
...And there's no downside to jailbreaking, only good things.Customization is key. I bought the hardware, so I'll do anything I fucking want with it. If I want to install apps for free, then I will. If I want to change every aspect of my springboard layout or bootscreen logo, i will. and as long as you follow the instructions from the QuickPwn app, it's easy to jailbreak. If you fuck up, just restore in itunes and try it again. I had the best luch with QuickPwn and iTunes 8.1.0

It's nearly impossible to brick an iPhone or iPod Touch. I tried on my iPod as a joke with a friend and even when I thought I had accomplished it all I had to do is put it in DFU mode and restore.
