Reality TV star and former cage fighter Alex Reid has called for a ban on school packed lunches in a speech in Parliament.

Mr Reid, ex-husband of celebrity Katie Price, said he wanted supermarkets, banks and big business to fund free, healthy school meals for all children.

He said pupils were eating chocolate and crisps which were "affecting their ability to concentrate in lessons".

Mr Reid was speaking to the All-Party Group on School Food.

Mr Reid and Ms Price, the writer, TV reality show star and model also known as Jordan, divorced last month and he is now engaged to former Big Brother contestant Chantelle Houghton.

Mr Reid told MPs about plans to raise 1 billion by offering companies promotional opportunities, including direct marketing to parents, in return for investment in a scheme called Let's Do Lunch.

He said his proposal would remove the financial burden of providing school meals from the taxpayer.

"The important thing is the Let's Do Lunch marketing would help companies investing in the scheme to generate more revenues," he said.

"We will essentially make them compulsory and ban packed lunches."

In 2010, the government shelved a scheme devised under Labour to widen entitlement to free meals to 500,000 more low income families.

Labour MP and shadow education minister Sharon Hodgson, who is a member of the all-party group, said there were fears that more children could lose entitlement to free lunches under the forthcoming Universal Credit system.

"We now have to look at other ways of achieving those ambitions. The project that Alex is working on could go some way towards that," she told the Sunderland Echo this week.

I'm not sure how school meals are in the UK, but if they are anything like the schlock they serve in the US than this is complete bullshit.

They're free if your family earns under a certain amount or a couple of pound otherwise, I just used to have packed lunch because I didn't want to queue to buy a sandwich when I can bring my own

There are actual nutritional guidelines here in the UK, with the exception of Academies, the schools can only sell decently healthy stuff.

Seems you guys missed the point where he said healthy. Considering he is a cage-fighter, I'd say he knows a thing or two about fitness and being healthy and I would assume he has good intentions to make sure children get good balanced food.

Who are they and what business do they have with children's school meals?

Many kids eat perfectly normal lunches that are made by their parents. What about those kids? Maybe it's not always full grain and lettuce, but I imagine a ham/cheese sandwich is healthier than snacks.

If they're worried about junk food, just ban it. Schools already ban a lot of things. If the kid wants a coke and a bag of chips, he can it eat after class. And if he gets it from his parents, then the free healthy meal provided won't change the bad parenting.

And the idea of businesses funding meals is just wishy-washy "perfect world" bullshit. Why would they be obligated to do so anyway? They would cut costs like mad and the kids would end up with inedible gruel.

How about people stop listening to idiots.

I don't know about you but I had garbage lunches in school and was never made by my parents, if I ever bought my own lunch, it was something I made. Its good to supply children with free healthy food. Hell, what about people on welfare, you know the kind who struggle to live and their children get free lunches. Don't they deserve healthy food?

The idea of businesses funding it is a good thing, the world should be perfect and shouldn't be "wishy-washy". You need to promote care and compassion in society, we have to start somewhere, don't we? Or would you rather just sit here and have people not give a shit.

Besides you know, its not like obesity and overweight people is a fucking epidemic.

Of course kids should have free lunches, I never said they shouldn't.

But some kids can, and want to bring packed launches. And banning that for everyone just because some kids stuff their mouths with chocolate is not a good idea.

I agree with you there about the banning, but I think what he's trying to do is promote healthy life-style choices in children and wants to prevent them bringing in shit food.

But at the same time, shouldn't limit choice or freedoms either.

So lets compromise, this guy has decent ideals, but fucked up execution.

He's focusing on the wrong meal! The main cause of students not concentrating due to hunger is a lack of breakfast. A bowl of cold cereal served in the morning will go much farther than a big lunch ever will. It would cost much less than what he's proposing and be more effective.

How about this, do what France is doing! Their food is excellent and healthy for children and the parents can bring in food if they want to out of their own pocket. The food's provided by the government so the nutrition and everything isn't cut down to make profits and everyone's winning.

yeah France had a lot of state support but this is a reason why they have such a high tax rate.

He said pupils were eating chocolate and crisps which were "affecting their ability to concentrate in lessons".
Because forcing them to eat what they don't want is going to magically improve them wanting to be in school and I can't imagine he bothered to think about how kids are going to just go out of school and buy whatever they want whenever they can.

I respect his ambitions but banning packed lunches is just going to increase business for the processed lard they sell in public schools.
More importantly, I agree that schools need to stop selling cookies, ice cream and other sweets.

From my experience students often prefer an energy drink as their first "meal."
