It's absolutely appalling how people like the teacher and aide can be so twisted as to do this type of thing.
The father is an incredible man, and I hope that "Jodi" does give them an apology, and loses her ability to teach forever.

Not saying that I disagree with the father, but he puts a lot of emphasis on the talking about alcohol in the beginning, sure it's extremely inappropriate, but it's not "treating them as subhuman beings" or whatever he said. Humiliating them (calling him a bastard) and playing on their emotions (No you cannot see daddy after mommy) were treating them as subhuman.

God damn that dad showed some serious restraint. If it were me the first thing I would do is bust through the doors to the principle's office and raise hell. Probably curse so much my sentences wouldn't make sense

At least here in Ireland it IS quite possible to get refuted from working with children

In order to have a job with children in Ireland, the Gardaí(police) need to do a FULL background check on you, and I'm certain shit like this would be a black mark...

Could anyone tell me what the teacher was saying just before calling him a bastard? What did he do wrong in the library? Just out of curiosity.
I think she's making fun of him for "peeing on the books," but it is a bit difficult to make out so I'm not entirely sure.

his point here is that they are treating them like animals, in that they can talk about whatever they want and get away with it. the latter half is more of bullying which is a human ideal i suppose.

I get that, but I'd say a lot of the kids wouldn't have understood what they were talking about due to their condition. It's like in regular schools when language teachers chat to each other in whatever language they teach deliberately so the students can't hear. But you're right I suppose, because the kids had varying degrees of autism, some of them would have understood, but wouldn't have been able to relay information back to their parents.

to be honest, I'm personally a little uncomfortable around people with the heavy disabilities, it's not them or anything, it's just, not what I'm used to

but at the same time, I love how some of them, you give them just one cracker and they're the happiest kid in the world. Others want the whole pack, but they are happy with one. I think it makes them awesome people, even though they can't help it and don't know what it's like to be 'normal'.

    Akain is a nice name.

It is disappointing that people feel the need to punish or belittle others for something which they had no say in.

Only met one person on the severe end, and he could speak French fluently and was brilliant at maths, despite his frequent tantrums.
I know a few others other than myself on the mild end, and you wouldn't know unless they told you. One can tell you anything about space. The other will become a documentary producer, and even has her own boyfriend. And I am obsessed with myrmecology.

That said, I hope that those special needs staff give that public apology. They need to be brought down a notch.

No, they were being treated as subhuman because the teachers didn't even consider them when speaking of their drinking habits. If it was any other class of children, no teacher in their right mind would have said that. But they didn't care because "It's just the retards it doesn't matter what they hear."

I remember in middle school some of the same things happened to me mostly in how the teachers in some of my classes would encourage other kids to torment me just for shits and giggles. Though my parents found out and they brought hell down upon that school.

Personally this made me think of the ethical issue of whether people being nice to others because they could be being observed (and thus possibly rewarded) is right.

    Edited:

I mean, there's an autistic boy at my school, if I was nice to him because I thought he was wearing a wire does that make me a better person than someone who isn't nice to him?

I know a mildly autistic guy that's a couple years older than me. He also is crippled in some way so when he walks he looks just about as retarded as they get. (He bends his right knee way down on every step, and his left arm is folded towards his chest with the wrist limp). Dude is one the coolest guys I have ever met though. He likes to credit some of that to the good parenting and school programs he got growing up.

Shows how much these things can actually matter when it comes to helping kids with mental retardation.

This is why I fucking hate unions, they protect scum like this from losing a job they don't deserve.

  29. Post #109
I know only a few cases of this actually happening but even just one time is too many. You take advantage of those children and their parents and you don't deserve to be a teacher. I hope this lady never gets a decent job again because she is a terrible person... to say the least.

What makes me worry is that my brother is acting the same way... My brother has never been violent but lately he has been acting up at school and comes back home all flustered. Acting the same way this guy has been describing his child's actions.

I want to give them the benefit of the doubt because anybody who wants to work with special needs children is a hero in my eyes. Unfortunately you get sick freaks like this every now and then too...

This is absoultely not on. I don't care if you talk about your drunken escapades when you aren't at work, but if you work with children and talk about it right in front of them you are being completely unprofessional.

I used to take Basic Skills classes , but one year they put me in with the special needs classes, and I swear, it was like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest or something. One kid was obsessed with the weather, and would use weather related words like they were catchphrases, another was obsessed with horses and would always be playing with little plastic horses at her desk, and then there was some big, mean looking kid who was always one inch short of going berserk. I don't understand how anyone could do that kind of job without a superhuman amount of patience.
They sound like pretty interesting people actually.
