Snoop Dogg's epic set featured appearances from a number of big names including Dr Dre, Eminem, 50 Cent and Wiz Khalifa, but it was the eerie hologram which ultimately stole the show.

It had previously rumoured that the rapper would be 'resurrected' at the festival but fans were left stunned by the life-like hologram that appeared on stage, with Tupac telling the crowd: 'What up Coachella?'

The star, who died in 1996 at the age of 25 after being shot four times, performed Hail Mary solo before teaming up with Snoop Dogg for Gangsta Party.

Katy Perry revealed on Twitter that the performance had reduced her to tears, while Rihanna described the evening as 'one of the best nights of my life'.

Other fans were equally amazed by the hologram, with Tupac rapidly becoming a top trend on Twitter as users rushed to discuss the performance.

@JayanniJoachim wrote: 'This may be the biggest moment in hip hop history...the return of Tupac? Wow.'

Another added: 'Just watched a video of Tupac performing Hail Mary at Coachella. Dude was a hologram I got chills watching that #insane'

But others were less impressed by the stunt, with some questioning whether it was slightly distasteful to depict the dead star on stage.

@JheneAiko wrote: 'The Tupac hologram was a great idea, nice try.... But these mannerisms are way off, I feel a little disrespected.'

@molly_knight also found the hologram rather unsettling, writing: 'Was completely freaked out by the Tupac hologram and I'm fairly certain I was one of five people out of 100,000 not on drugs.'

It seems likely that Tupac will return to the stage once more in a matter of days, with Snoop Dogg set to perform his headline set again during the second weekend of Coachella.

Moving into a bright future - with the power of weed

It's just a matter of time before we get a dead all-stars supertour with nothing but holograms.

Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain, Tupac, Elvis. Man, that would be amazing.

There was no hologram, he just dispersed weed through the audience and got them to edit it in afterwards.

My guess is they took one of his Coachella sets before he died and reconstructed the entire thing allowing the hologram to walk around the stage and dance in a very lifelike way. I have no idea how they made it look so real though!

Then they must have gotten an impersonator to record the beginning. The rapping sounds way too much like him.

How the fuck was this done? 3D rendered model? Some pre-96 videos of Tupac? What? And this kind of quality? What gives? I thought we were only capable of doing some basic shit?

Or maybe I'm missing something here.

After some research apparently it was a combo of a previous performance with Snoop and CGI. I also heard that Musion Systems pulled it off. http://www.musion.co.uk/index.html Might give you some info.

I really doubt it was genuinely 3D because then they'd have to construct around a performance or something. It might just be an illusion made to look 3D. Mind-blowing either way.

i think due to the nature of the hologram, snoop couldn't really see him from the angle he was at. the hologram is actually flat iirc

That was incredible... You can see that the body actor who performed the shit wasnt really 2pac
but at times it looked almost real. Probably cost a fortune.

Rapping was 2pac, the talking was an impersonator, pretty obvious.

This is a common mirror trick called Pepper's Ghost, it has been used for over a hundred years and has nothing to do with holography, this is just a very very clever implementation of it. If you jump to around 4:10 you can see that the angles go a bit weird as he turns on the stage.

This picture illustrates very well just how it works. Watching the video is pretty amazing though, especially at the end when he turns into smoke. Sadly this is nothing like a hologram, you cant get close or study it, you are simple seeing light reflected on a mirror from a hidden room.

Soon, Apple patents 3D holograms, dumps Jobs' memory into a tiny HDD, mount it on a moving hologram and call it the iJobs.

I won't be satisfied until we have looping holograms of Snoop Dogg dancing awkwardly.
