"If a song is longer than 4, MAYBE 5 minutes, it's too long and boring."

Not even joking, someone told me this when I was talking about Dream Theater and Rush. I was shocked at how many people agreed.
I guess they just need to find better long songs, because I didn't realize that this song
was 12 minutes long until I had already listened to it like 3 times.

    Skrillex IS dubstep, though.

    That's not dubstep.

    That's brostep.

    Edited:

By extension, Skrillex does mainly tend towards house and jungle audiences.

But then at least those people won't ruin The Doors or Led Zeppelin for me (since a lot of their songs are longer).

More than 5 minutes of the same motif can get overbearing. It's not a rule that it's too long and boring but it's plausible depending on what songs, and some bands to abuse it.

That song changes about quite a lot though, not just variations on a motif for nine minutes(like some classical)

yeah and i can listen to Bitches Brew without getting bored too. still human attention spans differ and generally people don't like long tracks that meander and drift which prog certainly tends to do.

now if it was 20 minutes of pure non-stop melodic hooks and functionalism then it would really just be several songs squashed into one name.
Bitches Brew is incredibly easy to hear. Something like Get Up With It or Dark Magus takes a LOT out of you to absorb it.

Meddle is easy as piss though.

half of Meddle is ambient music anyway.

Technically, Led Zeppelin was one of the earliest metal bands, along with Black Sabbath and such.

Oh man, "first/older is best"-wank is always pretty silly. Music is all about opinions, sure, but it's a little hard to try to assert that Pig Destroyer or something isn't more genuinely intense in sound than something like Judas Priest. Kind of a no-brainer anyway, I guess.

And I don't at all mean to suggest that heaviness/intensity = quality, just noting. I realize that achieving the most intense sound possible is by no means necessarily the intent of every metal band.

Then again, people's definitions of what is heavy differ.

A lot of metalheads "grow up" and start listening to electronic music, I feel like I see it all the time.

I have grown out of tr00 br00tal metal into pop music, although I still listen to tr00 br00tal metal every now and then.

I have never ever completely grown out of a genre. I still listen to every genre I used to listen to.
