Getting a new video card, any recommendations?

    1. Must be under $200, though it is preferable to be under $150, as I also need a new power supply
    2. Must use less than 500W

I prefer Radeon because I'm familiar with it; however I'll probably spring for an nvidia if it makes more sense to buy that.

    Edited:

I don't care about playing games on low, as long as I can play the game, only replacing this one because it has serious cooling problems (Idles at 55 Celsius, and that's when it has no dust in the fan)

If you want ATI under $200 the 6870 is a pretty solid card. I think they released the 7XXX line though? Might look into that, know nothing about it though.

My current PSU is 250W, hence why I need a new one. I will post Speecy after school tomorrow.

Maybe at 800x600. At the measly resolution of 1280x1024 it only gets an average of 32fps, and most people play at a higher res than that.

Don't make recommendations based on what performance you THINK that you're getting.

I recommend the gtx 460. It's the card i'm currently using. I can run most of the games at ultra 1920x1080, but some games i need to change the resolution. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125412

I can vouch for the GTX 460; it's a good card and runs fairly cool with good performance. I can run just about everything maxed out at 1920x1080 except for BF3; I usually run on medium/high settings.

You can max BF3 at abut 30-50 FPS if you OC it. It does start cranking out tons of heat though.

I have a GTX 460 for sale if you're interested, Spearman.

    Edited:

Even though it's only the 768MB version, it still plays games well at 1080p. After some oc'ing, it'll run bf3 on medium/high settings around 30fps.

    Edited:

The temps are also very good. It idles in the low-30s and peaked around 65C. When I upgraded video cards, I replaced the stock thermal compound with Arctic Silver 5. I haven't burned in the new paste yet, but the temps should be even lower now.

Also, the requirement for needing to use less than 500W is easy to make. Even a 6990 uses less than that.

    making a video, brb.

    Edit:
Fraps won't let me keep the FPS benchmark on the screen after the movie, so it wont show, but i take back my statement about 60 fps. it does goto 60, but at ultra, just tested in a high intense shooting/bombing scene, i got 35-45 fps, nothing below 30 whatsoever

Uprising is the least intensive level in the game, especially in the beginning. I pulled 60 FPS on my OC'd 9600GT in the beginning of that level on low, 1280x800, when it'd usually be around 20-30 FPS on Comrades or Operation Swordbreaker.

Storebought video cards are a joke. You pretty much need to order online in order to get PC components unless you want to pay ~$50-$100 extra for a video card, and only get low-midrange cards.

I've got a shop that's still selling 250's and 230's for about $150-$200... lol. A card that is several generations old, and is worth maybe $60 now. And that is their HIGH END card!

I doubt this guy is as lucky as you are, seeing as his store is selling a 460 for $200 lol when its worth closer to $130-$140

Though a 5830 is by no means a great card or anything

    That's true.

$200 for that card is pretty overpriced, and a 5830 wasn't all that great but for the price it isn't half bad.

^^^This. Just stop embarrassing yourself antid2 and accept that your card doesn't pull framerates near as good as you think/thought it does.

Those benchs are taken usually with at card releasal drivers which usually suck, he is probably not getting 1920x1080 ultra but probably 1440x900 Very high

get on caspian with 64 players and then watch it drop.

face it you can't pull off what your thinking. only reason you're getting that framerate is your resolution which would be wrecked going to 1920x1080 or 1200

Sorry, but I know a lot of people who think video cards really need the amount of power it shows on the box. I'm just stating it incase he doesn't know.

I don't own BF3, but it isn't like you'll be on 64 players all the time. And why bench after the most graphical intensive scene you can get, when you probably won't be seeing that play out at all times? I'm not defending this guy or whatever cards he's running, but this isn't really the way to show "real" performance. Of course this all depends on whether my assumption that there aren't max players on a server at all times, but yeah. When you want to show what a card can do, its brilliant to pull some heavy load and compare, but using review benchmarks isn't always the best idea either.

i play 24/7 caspian 64 man servers. They stay populated well into the upper 50s if not constantly full. so normally if it's 64 man servers, they will stay full if they are.

if he only plays metro 64 man it would be easier to play since it's got way less to load and add.
