MC3 I'm afraid without those there would hardly be any content at all, I like to treat this as general chat more than Sipwicket.

Unsure if this has been posted, sorry if late: http://hexus.net/tech/features/chass...dle-worth-400/ also not sure if it's open to outside of the UK but I would think it is, doesn't say in T&C.

Oh, I remember someone asking why Workstation GPU's are more expensive than "normal" ones. The difference is that workstation GPU's are design for the type of maths in CAD ect. Whereas "normal" ones are for entirely different type of maths, or that's the way I understand it. The "normal" ones CAN do it but no where near as fast. With the time you would save, you could do more stuff, and still make more/similar money. Also the drivers are geared towards CAD ect. as well.
I was under the impression that standard gpus performed "meh, close enough" math while workstation cards were far more accurate in their processing at the expense of speed.

But that would result in CAD's taking longer time to render ect, would it not?
I'm 100% sure that workstation cards are faster in that type of thing.

this is irking the shit out of me

my laptop slows WAY down when not on AC

but everything related to "Battery Mode" matches the settings of "AC Mode"

If I want to play a game I don't way to be constricted to the cord 24/7

So I can run BF3 on Med/High with the AC in just fine but even Low struggles on battery

I'm sure they are faster in openGL applications and running specialized rendering techniques. But how do you account for the shit directX performance?

even though I had it set to explicitly use dedicated graphics, it would switch to the APU on battery mode

Precisely. It's all in what math the drivers have it do, not what the hardware does. In many cases, you can trick workstation drivers into running on a gamer card (or vice versa, if you hate money).

Take, for example, Bresenham's line algorithm. It's *fast*, even running on a plain CPU. Only problem is, it's aliased as fuck.

Now, look at Xiaolin Wu's line algorithm. Sexy beast - it's effectively perfectly antialiased. Seriously - it's only as aliased as your pixel depth. Problem is, it's much slower, mainly because it's almost all floating-point.

Thing is, it's faster to take Bresenham's ugly algorithm and run it at 8x the resolution, then downsample, than it is to run Wu's. So gaming drivers do that - they run Bresenham's algorithm, then multisample it or supersample it.

Workstation drivers consider accuracy more important. They'll use Wu's algorithm. It's slow, but you don't need 120fps when you're designing a space shuttle - you need to see if that line hits *here*, or half a pixel over *there*.

GOD DAMNIT, FML. I got the "old" version of the external HDD from AMAZON. The 32GB Flash survivor from corsair was MUCH larger than expected, worse of all, I just bought a new 60Gb Agility 3 when the fucking Vertex 4's are coming out.
