Hey, so let's start off by saying that I don't know what's in these laptops. it's likely that some parts have been stripped, like the batteries for certain are gone. BUT! they are also very heavy, so i feel like there could be something in here.

My school does this program where they leave outdated pieces of hardware in a big box outside the tech office. whenever it gets filled, some technology recycling company comes by and snags all the remainders. Today i found 4 old Dell latitude laptops, 2 are d500,s and two are d510's. I saw these and thought, what the hell, so i grabbed them and brought em home with me.

Is there anything cool that I could possibly do with these, or should i just return them to the cardboard grave where they were before.

    "edit"
well this is awkward, apparently they have batteries and are missing some other bit. also 500 mhz processors

Title's gonna need changing in light of you finding the battery.

Regardless, I think you should guinea pig one and take it apart. You could have discovered a drug ring

My former step-dad was a asshole and my mother didn't see it at first and he brought his laptop over and left it and the relationship between the family deteriorated and I managed to get the laptop<3 after my mother saw he was a ass.

They're pretty old laptops, man. Those honestly sound more like c-series than d-series with that slow of a processor.

I guess if you got enough laptops, you could probably hook them up to get an at least get a reasonable storage unit, even through it is made out of a bunch of old laptops.

You can gut the laptops and do plenty of cool shit with them. Take a monitor, free second screen for your desktop, for example.
Or get an adaptor or something to connect it to mains power, and use one as a seedbox or backup or something.

I wish my school did that. I usually go around stores and schools and ask them if they have any old shit they don't use. I've scored a bunch of incomplete and broken old towers, some scanners (cold cathode lights make great keyboard illumination!) and an original, working Model M keyboard.

also you could send me one
and we'd be best buddies forever

On the other hand you can carefully gut it apart and if you have any skills with tools, you could turn it into a badass brief/carry case.

My engineering class happens in an unused art workshop that's long since been abandoned for most classes. There's literally around 3 stacks of laptops and a pile of old desktops right there, but they're all tagged. We're the only class that can get in there, so it'd be fairly obvious if anyone ran off with anything.

I have a Dell D510 laptop at home. Originally paid 700 for it when I started Secondary school, nearly 10 years ago.

The D500's have a 1.4GHz Pentium M in them so it's pretty outdated crap.
