So I'll start out with a bit of background information, I live in a fairly middle class, mostly white town and we've got all the problems you'd expect from a town like this. Kids smoking weed, drinking, and some more serious problems like heroine and crack (Albeit these aren't common drugs used around here but we've had problems with it in the past). Anyway because of this our local highschool has started up a sort of anti drug program called "Defy the Issue" who's goal is to reduce illegal substance use in the school, the thing is up until this point Defy the Issue never really did anything but put posters up around the school and host meetings from time to time. Apparently though they had been collecting images of students drinking and smoking from their facebook profiles and placing them in a power point that they posted on their twitter/website. The kicker is a lot of the images they placed on the PDF might actually be from former students of the school who're of drinking age and some are even out of college.

    The PDF in question:
    http://www.lrhsd.org/813610510929425...12_revised.pdf

Now I don't side with either party in this whole ordeal, I think the kids that have their images up there were being dumb by uploading them to Facebook, but I also think that the school had no right to go on their profiles and make an example out of them even if they did censor over their faces. Anyway I was just wondering if Facepunch has an opinion on the matter or what, if so I'd be interested to hear it.

I'm 19 and the closest I've gotten to alcohol was standing next to someone drinking it and illegal drugs was inhaling secondhand smoke and standing next to someone doing lines.

Well I did have a sip of wine on New Year's Day so I guess that was a lie.

This does have a valid point. Nobody should be drinking beer and smoking pot at 10-12 or even 14 years old. When you get older and can make choices for yourself, then that's fine by me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think failing to configure your privacy settings gives bullshit anti-drug campaigns the right to use your photos in a public slide show.

I wasn't real sure if that was the case, that's why I said to correct me if I'm wrong.

Still don't think it's right though, even if that is the case. These dumb shits shouldn't be posting illegal activities on Facebook, sure, but that doesn't mean other people should parade their stupidity around without their consent in order to aid their silly campaign.

Personally, I vote more power to the school.

If students are stupid enough to post these things on a public medium in the public domain of the Internet, then where exactly is the problem with the school using them?

If these people didn't want the public seeing these images, then they shouldn't have posted them on a public social site. I mean, the least they could do is set their privacy settings so you have to be friends in order to view the pictures.

With that being said, I would argue that if any of these pictures were set in such a way - which would mean that someone on this campaign friended these people and used the friend status in order to obtain these pictures, which would otherwise be unviewable to the general public - then I would argue the school crossed a moral line. As far as I know, though, this was not the case.

All that aside, I'm fairly certain when you sign up with Facebook you sign away your soul anyways, effectively giving up any intellectual property, copyright, trademark, or private-use rights you would have. Basically, anything you post on Facebook you have no claim to, meaning anyone can use them for anything.

More specifically, I think the rights go to Facebook, who in most cases (unless they decide to sell specific pictures) simply allow the public to use them freely.

Half the time with things like this it's just photos that you're tagged in, or even photos you're not tagged in and have been uploaded by others. I try and put any potentially unsavoury photos of myself on private so only some friends can see them on Facebook, but I know there are others out there that don't even have me tagged and would require me to search through party albums.

When I was in high-school, for my video production class I would drink and smoke in camera for film purposes, nobody gave a fuck. (Not in school, outside of school premises and hours)

My school liked to think of itself in keeping a high standard in sports and in academics so it put up a bunch of posters around the school that had a few kids smiling on the campus.

    It read:

"Most [School Name] High School students don't get involved with drugs and alcohol."

Is that something to really feel accomplished of? Usually you wouldn't bring the fact up at all and they think admitting its just a minor thing is better?

Most everyone thought it was pretty silly and yes this was a mainly middle class caucasian school too.

one time i was at a party, and some bozo took a picture of a table with empty liquor bottles strewn about and proceeded to tag me and everyone else who was at the party. nothing came of it, and there was no malice on his part, but it shows you can get fucked over through no fault of your own(unless you count underage drinking but hey )
