    Hugo, 5/10
A loveletter to film, lacking any real plot and proper direction. Hugo felt like a secondary character to the plot, and the main one wasn't fleshed out enough with an unexplained nonsensical character shift halfway through. The best thing about the film was Sacha Baron Cohen. a very forgettable film whose only trait was begging to be admired and remembered as an artist

    Edited:

saw "the artist". 8/10. it was clever, entertaining, and well acted but lacked any real substance.
agreed. it was a nice spectacle and it was something different, but there ultimately was very little substance to it and it wasn't very memorable. basically it was a gimmick

    Edited:

both of these movies felt like oscar bait

    Edited:

both films feel like they're too busying paying respect and homage to films of the past, without doing anything to make them a good film of the present

Haven't seen Hugo, but the fact that in our time something has been made to pay homage, is a tribute in itself.

although I kind of agree in that watching it makes you realise how similar it is to the silent movies in that era.
maybe that's the point though who knows.

But being a tribute isn't enough for the movie to be good

    Edited:

The style of the film is the tribute, the story is seriously lacking

yeah but since when did Silent Movies have a truly in-depth story. Think about it.

why does that make a difference? it just means the very idea of a modern silent film is flawed, if you don't elevate it to transcend the story of a classical silent film then what's the point? being an homage doesn't excuse having a bad story - if I wanted a silent film with a classic silent film story, I'd watch an old silent film. there's really no reason at all it couldn't have had a much better story. it would still have been playing an homage to silent films. it would just be a better modern film too.

Dude, the premise was to pay homage to silent movies. If it made MASSIVE complex additions then it would be an overblown dud of a movie.

That dream sequence for example. That's the part where you feel removed from the entire experience of the homage, and imagine that being a 30 minute scene. Destroys the movie.

Are you kidding? The story doesn't have to be COMPLEX to be good. (drive drive drive)
Just a better story, that's all. It wouldn't ruin the homage at all.

meh, I'll meet you halfway and accept what you were looking for to be different.

I personally thought the fact that it gave me an authentic classic silent movie experience to be well worthy.

Come in seeing 19 new posts, expecting to see a film i may want to watch, see rusty and AK'z having a discussion on a single films merits. Could anyone recommend a relatively easy watch film that's dramatic enough to get you interested? (thinking along the lines of the prestige)

That's a long shot to recommend. If it's anything like Solaris, you have to tell them that it's a slow absorbing movie.

Clash of the Titans (2010)- 2/10. So fucking boring. I went to take a piss and missed the Medusa fight, too.

The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence- whatthefuckamIwatching/10. I won't forget it, but I did the right thing and didn't look up any spoilers for it.     For some reason, the baby's head getting crushed shocked me the most.

Requiem For A Dream- 9.5/10. Sarah Goldfarb's story is so beautifully tragic that it blows my mind. To me, it was the most interesting story of the bunch, but the rest are almost as great. A damned good movie.

    The Other Conquest - 7/10...

A movie that I've been really wanting to see, finally got my hands on it.
A story about the Aztecs after being conquered by Spain.

Unfortunately, it's hampered down by a somewhat lackluster plot and some meh acting.
The cinematography and music make up for it though.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (only caught the last half, quite apt now that I think about it) 7.5/10

The animation really put me off at first but the story was enjoyable and the voice acting was great. I also thought the soundtrack worked very well, the chorus of whispers in some songs built tension suitably and "Canis Lupus" which I had already heard outside of the film works even better in context.

I'd only say watch Tron Legacy in the Cinema. The 3D is cool, the sound is amazing and it the entire look for the film is fantastic.

Alternatively listen to Jeff Bridges really stupid one liners.

Also just watched TT3D: Closer to the Edge - 8/10 - For a documentary type film I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, those riders have god damn balls the size of baby's heads.

If you like movies that are about the experience and not really about the story then Tron 2 is enjoyable, if you are looking for something more then I wouldn't recommend it.
