I have managed to break my Nexus S' screen too.

Now I have a broken ZTE Blade and a broken Nexus S (and a broken Nokia 5800, but I have already ordered a screen for that so I can sell it). My cat stepped on it and it was on the corner of the table, you can guess the rest.

Android is like a giant Java app and Java is slow for UIs and such. Look how efficient WP7 and iOS are on less powerful hardware.

It's not Java's fault. It's the UI framework. WP7 apps run in VMs too and are extremely smooth.

I don't know what the dslr controller has to do with your question, but you can upgrade manually if you root, you may even be able to upgrade via Kies (officially, I mean) but I'm not sure, I didn't stick to a stock ROM
