Bring back Dead City! Admittedly, there's a mod that already does that, but with some polish and attention I think it'd make a good level.
There's just the problem that it kind of needs other SoC levels like Army Warehouses as well to connect to it. LURK 1.2 is probably implementing that too so I don't know if Redux needs to do it too.

I think SMRTR and Dead City(mod) are intriguing in a way which they'll put in the new levels but I don't think Thorny isn't going to be content in just slapping in a level if he isn't also going to work the storyline so that it would actually make sense for the level to be there.

Catacombs! Those and anomalies are like duct tape for plots.
Just re-checked the Clear Sky map, the Dead City is conviently right North of Yantar and a little ways Southwest of the Red Forest (CS). So barring major restructuring of the global map it'd be feasible to have the map appear. However, there's still the issue whether it's stable enough to accommodate gameplay and whether it's too much of an effort to convert for CS/CoP or not.

As I was browsing my folder with images from the real life exclusion Zone, something caught my eye...

(look at the structure on the right)

    Could this be... ?

    Edited:

Maybe I'm reading a bit too much into it but it's quite a coincidence that there are two other Call of Pripyat locations (specifically in Zaton) within less than a kilometer's radius from that.

There's a lot a of real life zone buildings and locations in STALKER.
Yes I know, especially in Call of Pripyat. Just wondering if that's the inspiration for the Sawmill at Darkwater or not, since GSC has taken some artistic liberties when modeling some of the lesser-known locations.

I wrote a short story inspired by some recent events in Shadow of Chernobyl. Obviously it didn't really happen as I wrote it, but if I wrote it exactly how it played out, it'd be a boring story of me shooting some stalkers and a mutie. So I changed it up some, to make it more enjoyable. Hope you guys enjoy!

I had just returned to the bar in Rostok from disabling the Brain Scorcher up north. I wasn't ready to head to Pripyat yet, for the Monolith soldiers had really done a number to my gear. I needed supplies, and to get those supplies, I needed money. I talked to a stalker in the bar named Snitch. He said he'd give me a job; a simple one, at that. All I had to do was kill someone and I'd be 5,000 rubles richer. Normally, I wasn't a fan of killing non-hostile stalkers, but I had no choice here. Though I felt as though I was making a mistake, I accepted.

Loading my spare rounds into my lucky Groza and grabbing a few spare supplies from friendly loners, I set out to the army warehouses, my sights set on a stalker named 'Master.' Snitch had told me he was experienced; one of those exo-suit stalkers. I had fought Monolith soldiers wearing those, and it was no party, but I figured I could take him down.
Sneaking up to the first set of abandoned homes in the army warehouses, I checked my PDA's contacts list. There he was, his picture showing a tough-looking bastard with an exo-suit and some sort of silenced, bullpup rifle. There were also several other loners, which would cause a problem for me. I doubted they'd let me kill Master and leave, but I took the chance anyways, walking nonchalantly into the camp and searching Master out.

I saw him, scouting the road alone. It shouldn't be too much of a problem to cut his throat and leave, I thought. I was wrong. Waiting to make sure no one was looking, I crept up behind him and moved to cut his throat with my combat knife, but I was too slow. He saw me and dodged, swinging his supressed rifle around and firing at me. I grunted as the rounds impacted my kevlar, dropping the knife and desperately trying to fire back with my Groza. It jammed after the first shot. I swore in anger and tackled the stalker, pulling his sidearm from its holster and emptying the magazine into his head before he could react. Master was dead, but I had more problems now.

The other stalkers were coming towards the commotion, their rifles at the ready. I tossed the empty pistol at the closest one, a rookie. It smacked him in the face and he yelped, confused. Smacking the mag of my Groza a few times, hoping to unjam it, I pulled the trigger with the rifle centered towards his torso. It fired, tearing the poor rookie's jacket to shreds and ending his life. I prayed that he had died painlessly, though I knew he hadn't. Quickly taking cover behind the log cabin, I tossed a grenade at the feet of a pair of stalkers in Sunrise suits, ending their lives as well.

I dashed inside the cabine to hide from a few other stalkers, much better equipped than those I had killed. Reloading and taking cover behind some boxes, I waited for their entry, but I heard something completely unexpected. The shuffling of feet, a throaty growl, and a terrified scream from a stalker told me all I needed to know: bloodsuckers were here.
The unlucky stalkers targeted by the bloodsuckers were surely screwed, for lack of a better term. But there was another one, in the other house, waiting for the mutants. I saw shimmers of light as the cloaked beasts sprinted towards the house.

Soon after, there was a commotion of rifle fire and screams. "Haha, you mutant fucks!" the stalker cried, reloading. "Two down, one to go, and not a scratch on me!"
It seemed he had spoken to soon, for the last remaining bloodsucker pounced on him before he could fire, throwing his weapon to the side and latching its tentacles to his exposed neck. He screeched as it drained his blood. When the stalker's sounds of agony and fear ceased, I knew he was gone, and that I was next. My heart racing, I prepared myself for the inevitable arrival of the beast, my Groza trained on the front door. I heard its rapid footsteps as it raced towards the door, and a shimmer of light gave away the bloodsucker's presence.

I screamed, heart pounding, as I emptied round after round at the mutant, but it seemed it wasn't enough. Pouncing me as it had done the other stalker, I fell to the ground, my Groza falling too far for me to reach. I thought it was the end as I felt the tentacles press against my neck. Praying to God for forgiveness and wondering why I had ever come to the wretched Zone, I prepared myself for the pain of death.

But that pain never came, as the thunderous roar of a shotgun deafened me. The bloodsucker tumbled off of me, dead, and I looked up at my savior. A rookie, almost shaking in his boots, dropped the SPAS-12 he had looted from one of the dead stalkers outside. "A-are you okay? Did it get you?" he asked, his voice quavering.
I stood up and laughed, giving the diminuitive rookie a bear-hug. "You saved me! Thank God, you saved me. I was sure I was dead," I said, releasing him. He looked up at me, blinking. "Eh..you're welcome?" The rookie picked the shotgun back up, pumping it. "What happened here, exactly?" I narrowed my eyes slightly. "You'll learn it's better not to ask questions, rookie," I said, picking my Groza up and reloading the rifle. "But to repay you for saving me, you can have everything that once belonged to these stalkers. I hope you'll put it to use."

The rookie left and started looting the dead stalkers, and I walked over to the corpse of Master. Looking through his belongings, I took his PDA and his peculiar rifle (which I would later learn was a modified SA-80), returning to the bar in Rostok. When I came back, Snitch smiled knowingly at me. "Glad you survived, Marked One. I forgot to mention you may have trouble with him. I didn't think you'd take the job if you knew there'd be other stalkers there." I slammed Master's PDA down on the table. "There's his PDA. He's dead, obviously. Now give me the money." Snitch paid me the agreed upon amount and I pocketed it, leaving without a word.

Later, I decided I'd never associate with that rat again.

Shooting through them gives off loads of sparks, so it feels like none of the shots are actually going through. I'm not sure, but it might also affect the bullet path so you'll have to spray to hit anything.

I think this is the case. But yeah, it's definitely possible to shoot through them. And as a general rule, it's good to have a good amount of both armour-piercing and regular rounds if you think you're going to do battle against stalkers for situations where your foe decides to hide behind light cover.

I don't think the guide actually does anything, just like the batteries that say you need to use them every so often but actually don't need to.
Oh, okay. I heard from someone that the batteries would make the NVGs and flashlight brighter but apparently not, then.

Formerly a mechanic at the "KholodMach" plant. After his wife left him, he decided to take his own life. However, being deeply religious, he chose the Zone as an unconventional suicide method. Contrary to his expectations, he survived. He has gained invaluable experience and has won the respect of other stalkers thanks to his professional skills. Master is probably the most qualified mechanic in the Zone, and repairs equipment and vehicles. Installing security systems in gang bunkers is what he does best. He is welcome everywhere he goes. A simple, stern man, a bit rough at times.
The Zone has lost an artist. A moments silence, if you please.

Master and Scarecrow are pretty much The Zone's Second and Third finest stalkers. Master is a suicidal man that can escape death by usage of sheer willpower and experience, and Scarecrow is so powerful he has his own smuggling line and trade.

It's a rumour that holds probably as much truth as tales of him getting magical powers from the Wish Granter. Even if he had come to the Zone in 2006, you'd still have had the likes of Forester who have been living there since the accident (though not many!) Either way, his skills of finding safe paths through anomaly fields are remarkable and he could possibly be even a better resource to have than a simple fighter, however good they may be with a rifle.

After his wish he lost all needs for a weapon or combat experience
But the Wish Granter isn't real, hence Guide either has the Compass artifact or he's just so damn good

Though one thing very mysterious about Guide is that in CoP they all make him out as a man that vanishes the second he takes you to your destination.
He probably doesn't want to stick around Pripyat too much unlike Garik who enjoys being there (probably so that GSC could explain him staying there for the player). I kind of wonder what made him go toward Pripyat again, though. Maybe he got contacted by Strelok who wanted to find a way to Pripyat from the CNPP ?

It can still do crazy shit to people. Pretty much a specially made artifact/anomaly..
Except that when you meet Doc and he tells you about the Wish Granter, he says that noone who has gone to the Monolith has returned alive. If Guide had indeed acquired his powers from the Wish Granter, Doc would know about it since hell, they're part of the same damn group. Same tales are told about Doctor ; that he got his powers from the Wish Granter which we know to be complete hogwash.

Guide pretty much met no resistance on his way to the CNPP, unless you count anomalies. After his wish he lost all needs for a weapon or combat experience. Nimble spends most of the time off-level and probably gets his stuff from trade, and when he's not digging around for shit other people want he's heating the chair. Lebedev only did the management in X8 before shit hit the fan. If anything, he's mostly responsible for the Brain Scorcher.

okay so, in SGM 2.0, there's this guy who walks around in the northern parts of Yanov. he's part of the faction called "Dawn." his name, is Gleb. Gleb Bedbug. he wields a mighty RPG that i've titled "The Mattress Man." anything that comes near him and his RPG becomes dead.

anyway, i'm walking around in said northern parts of Yanov when a rain of heavy gunfire is set upon me. i can tell by the sounds of the guns that it is an alpha squad.

    "fuck"

so i duck down behind some rocks as the hail of fire rains over me. i turn around to see happy Gleb walking around. a stray bullet flies and strikes happy Gleb. turning him into a not-so-happy Gleb.

    that was their mistake.

before I could get a shot off, he raised his mighty Mattress Man and fired. it roared as it exploded, taking out almost the entire squad.
    all except
    the squad leader.

the leader, stunned and terrified, pulled up his VSS, cracking several brutal rounds into Gleb's chest, but this did not put Gleb down. Gleb would NOT allow that. with a *click* he shoved another angry rocket into The Mattress Man. I could almost see the terror in the leaders eyes as Gleb aimed his righteous rocket launcher and fired.

the leader flew back several feet and landed with a yelp. he lay crumpled and broken, uttering prayers silently to himself and cursing Gleb Bedbug. Gleb approached the leader with an easy smile and picked up the leaders VSS. he then fired all 15 shots into the leader's power-armored head. the helmet was not match for Gleb's bullets, and easily cracked and broke under the fire. after the deed was done, Gleb tossed the useless weapon on the leader's rotten corpse.

he turned to me, Mattress Man still in hand, and spoke these sacred words:

    "What's up, man?"

after that, he flipped around in the opposite direction, and began walking into the sunset. one of the last survivors of the Dawn faction.

    a picture, of this badass:

I nearly shat myself the very first time I saw Dawn troops shooting RPG-7 barrages at the mutant hordes in SGM 1.7
The RPG Monolith bloke in SoC didn't seem to have the same effect, though that's probably because he missed me half the time. The Dawn guys seem to hit me all the time, not deliberately but just because i'm in the wrong place at the wrong time D:

Is it better to carry the Big Ben and use the same ammo reserve as my Groza or carry a different pistol and its own ammo?
If you're going looting, having a shared ammo pool will give you more room for swag. I'd suggest keeping a different pistol with all of its ammo in your stash and switch them out for whatever you plan on doing.

I'd use the Big Ben with a Groza (or even better, a VSS). Allows you a backup weapon without having to carry different ammo types, room for more ammo or loot; and in the case of the Vintorez, a weapon that's a bit handier to use at point-blank clusterfuck situations.

    Edited:

That having been said, I generally don't carry a pistol at all, especially in mods with very low weightlimits like Redux. In the time it takes to switch to a pistol, I could already have reloaded my main, or would be dead anyway.

I never use pistols. I only have them in SoC mods where you can't put anything else in the first slot.

They're weak, short range, inaccurate... no reason to use them. Except for the super deagle.

If you can use them wisely, then why not?
