Product key? It's on the download page. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/iso

Check underneath the download links for your language.
Oh sorry I knew it was going to be me being dumb, I followed a direct download link hence not seeing those.

I am in love with this. It feels so fluid, smooth, and the classic desktop environment is so nice, although, I admit, It would be nice to still have the button on the bottom right VISIBLE, to show/hide the desktop. You only see it when you click it, otherwise it's invisible space.

Also, stay away from Firefox Nightly in the Consumer Preview, the damn thing crashes when you try to browse for a file to upload to a website. The normal 10.0.2 stable build works just fine.

I was going to say it should be possible with the msstyles, but having checked it apparently the image still exist there and is just removed from a deeper level.

Win+I or hit the bottom or top right of the screen and click settings.
They should give a hint to where it is. It feels like they try to hide it away again (like in vista). Power off shouldn't be under settings it should be in the transparent bar.

So, what's actually new in consumer's preview compared to developer's one apart from removed start button?

The Win 8 driver didn't even install for me (HD 6870), but the Windows 7 driver did in compatibility mode. Seems to work fine otherwise.

This new START seems really annoying.

The button is really small, and I have a screen to the left of the start 'button', so it's not just possible to throw the mouse in the corner.

Also, i can't seem to find any exit buttons inside the apps in start? I HAVE to alt+f4 to exit them? or am I missing something?

The search in start also seems quite.. bad compared to the awesome search capabilities in Windows 7.

And now I can't even close the START screen? Icons disappear but I've still got my background color on the screen, and as soon as i hit the mouse or anything, the icons come back on....

I found out that if you hover your mouse to the top of the app and then hold your mouse button you can move the app around. If you take it to the bottom it closes the app. That even works with the desktop. This thing was clearly made for a touchscreen.

Don't think it like the start screen would be a separate app/window. It's practically handled as the new desktop in a sense. The regular desktop is handled like an app, so that can be closed and restarted.

This is pretty cool, I can probably get used to aero.

Also like the fact they are finally doing things like this:

Instead of the applications just crashing because there's no .NET.

How did they hide it in Vista?

Would be even better if it did the same with C++ Runtimes.

Apps go into standby (no CPU/Network/etc) so there's no need to close them. If you really want to for whatever reason grab the top and drag it down to the bottom.

    How's the search different?

How else do i get it out of my view?!
I really dont see why we Microsoft wants us to be, as far as I can see, forced to use these full-screen apps? I can't even update my windows without using my hole screen?

The new search just seems to slow and dumb. In windows 7 you could quickly throw in a word like 'update' and hit enter - then Windows update would start. Now I have to browse between Apps, settings and so on?

The reason I close them is so that my alt+tab menu isn't full of metro apps that I'm not even using. And they still use RAM, right? Or does windows distribute that RAM to other processes if they actually need it?

Or alternatively just click the desktop button in the start screen. I have two monitors and the second monitor seems to always show the regular desktop, so I haven't had many problems with it.

Also a taskbar on the second monitor without any extra software? Fucking finally Microsoft. Also proper support for spanning wallpapers between two monitors.

You can hit the Windows key or Win+D.

It distributes RAM to other processes, if you're running low it closes those apps for you.

I really wish it would be possible to scroll while in metro with dragging the mouse as opposed to how it is now. I find it quite the pain to navigate things as it is.

Windows key seems to just switch between the start screen and the last app you were using, so it doesn't necessarily always bring you to the desktop. Win+D seems to be the only thing that always brings you back the desktop that I've found.

Yea, but I'm on a laptop and quite honestly this touch pad's scroll is terrible. I also haven't installed the drivers to have scrolling supported.

Well, when I changed all the blue LED's to green LED's - then the "gaming" slider - which disables the windows keys slided to the non-gaming mode. But the slider under the keyboard is still in gaming mode. So the slider is now stuck, and I've just been too lazy to unscrew it and fix it.
