it's more than "quality of audio".
It's more to do with frequencies being pushed to their limit.

Think about how music is compressed. The bass and highs are sliced off, then it is squished and hunkered down.

Audiogearheads look for particular things to hear in music, details that will be missed by average people like you or me.

They're on a quest. Me, I'm here to relax.

They're just mentally crippled, seriously they are losing absolutely nothing primary secondary or even tertiary to the song, literally with most modern processing and production they are losing shit at like 20,000Khz and at 20Khz and shit at the edges of our hearing, and even then they're losing nothing.

There is no legitimate reason for getting anything better than standard 320kbps, FLAC fair enough so you have a loss-less copy of the song/album etc etc.

    I dunno if I'm "inferior" but I don't really notice a difference between 128kbps and MP3 320 let alone 320 and FLAC 24.

    give it time.

But some people enjoy low bitrate things too, nothing wrong with it.

Yeah, but people will be different.

MP3 vs CD arguements all over again.
I'm happy with anything over 200kbps. Anything below is way too loud and overcompressed.

I've always thought that hugely expensive audio gear is just a healthier way for life to tell you you're too goddamn rich than, say, cocaine.

People cut off differently. it's said your frequency range drops at around 25 anyway.

I reckon in the future, once I've got a good set of "Akayz Core Albums" in mind, then I'll just get the best quality versions of them and bask in their awesomeness.

Money is there to be spent, so why not do it on the things you love?

    I've always said the same

It just gets on some people's nerves that some people spend a shit load of money on a fancy set of headphones when they could get top quality from a cheaper set. People today have also learned to concern themselves with what people spend their money on.

I don't agree with audiophiles, but I always look at it this way:

I spend top dollar on my guitar equipment to get the "best sound", I could probably get really close to the sound I want with much cheaper equipment

Same thing with audiophiles which is why I don't attack them

I'm not taking sides though, I like to stay neutral. Looking at both sides of the matter at hand.

Good headphones allow you to truly see the difference between lossy and lossless, I've got a pair of $40 Sennheiser HD218's and you can still hear the oomph and detail that comes along with lossless.

I have $145 Sennheiser's and I really don't see much of a difference honestly. Though I do understand now what Akayz means about the loudness of low bitrates.

That being said, I've never downloaded a FLAC album. Maybe I should get an MP3 version and a FLAC version of a song and see if it really makes any difference to me.

Regardless, V0 sounds perfectly good enough to me, absolutely no different from 320, and it's significantly smaller.

I think the point of the matter is this:

With, say, car collecting, there's a purpose to spending more money. If you have a million bucks to blow on a Bugatti, go for it, you'll get something better than your average family car.

With audiophilia, you spend $600 on some headphones that are, really, truly, and genuinely not that much better than something you could get for $100.

    Edited:

The argument "It's your money to spend so no one can say it's dumb" is absolutely the stupidest thing I've heard, too. It's things like that that cause recessions. "Yeah let's spend an exorbitant amount of money on something that we could get for cheaper, that'll show 'em"

See with the bugatti, you have a noticeable difference, specifically that you no longer have an accelerator but have a warp drive controller instead.

On the other hand with the headphones you will notice that background noise is cut down a little.

Unless someone fucked up a single solder in any of your equipment, then you get to enjoy the sounds of radio waves being picked up by your equipment.

So apparently a new Soundgarden album comes out this spring, and it's supposed to sound similar to Down on the Upside.
