Nope. And IMO we will be lucky if it won't be possible even after release. It's a story of how you died, not how you became a muscled athlete while desperately avoiding starvation and hordes of zombies. I hope that average time you will last will be measured in weeks or at most months.

At this point i sense some vagueness of where the game is going, at one side it's a story of how you died because there was no chance of survival on the other side devs are planing to introduce farming and skill development which points to prolonged survival. I fear it will end up like the story of how you died... ...of old age. :)
well the whole stat improving thing is a definite addition at this point. The devs already said you'll start weaker and slower now, and gradually improve in different aspects. As for if that's in effect at the moment, I'm not sure.

    1) Would your stick weapons pierce a skull at a safe distance with reliability?

    2) You used a purpose made bow and purpose made arrows to shoot stationary targets in a calm setting.

I am not saying that string weapons are useless, but without training you are at a disadvantage. Homemade string weapons can be inconsistent and unreliable. Homemade ammunition would also be difficult to work with.

The average human head is around 9 by 6 inches. You need to hit the upper half, so your target is maybe 5 by 6. Now your target is moving, swaying this way and that. It's hard, especially since the Arrows are less effective overall against zombie both physically and mentally. You won't make Zed fearful and in pain with a shoulder hit. A leg shot won't stop it unless you sever something important. Shit, it won't die with a shot to the throat unless you hit the spinal cord.

Useful for hunting food, starting fires and dealing with unaware Zeds and humans. Besides that a gun or blunt weapon would serve you better.
The homemade bows wouldn't penetrate a skull, but I'm pretty sure even my brother's crossbow could pierce a skull. We fired it at some wood. It came atleast 15cm through the back of a 3cm plank.

    Edited:

And I have never had any sort of archery training. I'd love to take it up as a sport though.

Find your Java 7 install manually. Or download it again and check custom install option to see where it installs.

FYI, you need Java 7 32-bit.

Is there an option to grapple with zombies? You should at least be able to shove them back (with the risk of being bitten, of course).

An "unarmed" option or something should be added.

It's annoying if you spawn in a house without weapons, and you get grappled/held back by a single zombie unable to even push them away.

Not saying you need to go all out but it would be cool if you could just run around a bit each day and build up your stamina or something. You shouldn't be able to become MACHO MAN RANDY SAVAGE and go out punching zombies to death but still.

Ironically that just happened, a bare-chested muscular guy with a sledgehammer was standing on my front lawn mowing down zombies going "Hell yeah, let's bust some heads."

And now a bunch of random people are running around in my house, eating all the canned food and throwing open all the doors. Ungrateful fucks.

So far, the best weapon I've had is a pencil I found in a drawer. Tried to use it with a blank notebook to make a diary but no luck, apparently you're supposed to just jab someone in the eye with it.

I made bows from those bamboo sticks that you plant next to plants to make them grow straight as a kid. They worked really well. And my older brother even made a crossbow, which was accurate and powerful.

Also, I went to an archery range last year with my class. About 10 meters on a target, hit the middle every shot. It's not hard at all, you just need to think about your shooting.
    Bamboo isn't native to Kentucky.

Wooden bows in general require both a great deal of skill to manufacture and specific upkeep to keep them from destroying themselves in any length of time.

Your only real bet would be a preexisting crossbow or bow.

Even then I'm not really sure how effective they would be. Arrows, on a good day, aren't really all instantly lethal to people. British longbowmen would throw their arrows tip first into the ground to prep them for firing, both for easy access and because they recognized that they were unlikely to kill very many people and that infections (which they made more possible by planting the heads in the ground) would be the major killer for them.

Bullets hit with what is basically explosive force. You strike the body and the bullet mushrooms and ricochets off bone, tearing up all sorts of stuff. Hit a skull with a bullet and it will not only tear a nasty hole, but it will turn the shattered portion of the skull into secondary projectiles and occasionally cause an overpressure in the brain. Overall combat and hunting caliber (medium-large game) bullets generally cause catastrophic damage to the brain. Arrows...arrows and bolts are a little different. They can certainly strike with a lot of force and accuracy, but you simply aren't going to have the same overwhelming catastrophic destruction when you hit the head. So depending on the design for the zombie, it is entire possible you could loose several bolts, all head shots, and basically do nothing to a zombie because you failed to connect with the relatively small brain stem.

Arrows don't have a great deal of power, especially compared to any bullet. But you also have to keep in mind, that in the real mind, ammo makes a lot of a difference, the "ricocheting around the skull" won't happen with many types.
