As in physical immortality, having a body that will not die no matter what happens to it (edit: at an set age that you can choose). Would that be something you would wish to have, or something you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy?

It all depends. If I was immortal, but still aged, I'd either live thousands of years as a vegitable or atleast in horrible pain. Now, if I were stuck at a "Peak" age, something like 20s to 30s, I'd welcome it.

But once the world ends (which it will, either next week or a million years) you'll just be floating in space. That might be a problem

Would prefer the type of immortality Nathan from Misfits has, by this I mean you can die momentarily but your body would come back soon after good as new.
The peak age thing would be a bonus, however it would be fucking tough seeing everyone you knew die, just watching them all go one by one would be pretty horrible.

I'd say after a couple thousand years of life you might get used to it. It'll definitely effect your mind though.

The Doctors technically not immortal, he can only die twelve times. But the general idea of him living for such a long time and seeing so many things that are good and bad is an interesting argument for immortality.

While I'd be all for immortality, there's the whole issue of time dialation, which means the longer you live, the faster time is perceived. Ever notice how time seems to go faster the older you get? By the time you're 18 you'll have perceived 50% of your life, imagine how fast a minute will pass if you're 3,000.

I'm not sure if that scales up as such for longer lifespans. I'd say the effect is more drastic between child and early adult years and lessens after that.

I suppose we should also use the other thread though.

You would live long enough for the real space age to happen, so that's an incredible bonus.

Plus, I'm sure in a thousand years or so everyone will be immortal.

You get to choose your planet before everyone else evolves in the next one. Then you can wait and become their almighty alien-god.

I would love immortality. Either Wolverines style, or something along the lines of 'respawning' in a way wherever you wish, only you cannot destroy whats 'respawning' you.

Sure it'd be numbing to see life come and go, but very interesting. I think I'd want to be born in the 1500's or so if I had this. See humanity's best years ever evolve.

You'd Neither. Else it looks like you'd pick between of those two.

And If aging process was slow, like for Night Elves of Warcraft Lore (They can live up to 10k years without any difference at all), then I'd be glad.

Actually most of the points are sound
Evolution will turn you into a freak - this is not perceived as you directly turning into a freak, but as you are immortal your genetic code does not actually change alongside that of a baseline human. Sooner or later you will become an evolutionary fossil, a past day human amongst humans who have evolved elsewhere.

    Experimentation
Essentially you carry the cure for the one thing we cannot currently cure. The moment someone, be it the government or pharmacorps catch wind of this, you are in a lot of trouble.

    Mental aging
Again, this is not as much you getting brain illnesses which often happen at a later age. This is more akin to you still aging in your head. A ten year old perceives the world differently then say a completely mentally sound seventy year old. Now imagine if you get to see seven centuries, seven millenia and more. You'd probably end up being completely and utterly disconnected from any human culture in just a century or two.

While the time to insanity is probably somewhat wrong, you are bound to experience time very differently after a couple of centuries. You might sleep for a month and consider it akin to a one nights sleep and similar issues.

Evolution takes many years until it's noticeable. I'm sure that they've found a way to either mechanically augment us, or just to modify our genetic code.

    Edited:

And who says that we're the only person who is immortal? What if someone found a way to life forever and is selling it for massive amounts of money instead?

Assuming you stay in your 20's or so like Raxa said, just imagine witnessing thousands of years of human history with your own eyes...

If I had invincibility and couldn't die no matter what, I'd be ok as long as I can't feel pain and can't suffer major damage. Being immortal with all your bones broken would be not fun.
If it was just age immortality, then I'd be even more for it since I can die anytime and yet not die of old age.

As for seeing your relatives and loved ones die, yes, that is happening even while you're alive. Chances are you will see your parents die and maybe your wife.
I can see how that could be a problem for some, but I personally do not really intend to marry or keep long term partners since I prefer to develop my skills and explore the world rather than sit in one place growing kids.
And if you never aged, you could really get a new partner.

What I would be concerned about is people finding out and then sending me for lab tests, or getting captured and imprisoned. Spending your infinite lifetime in prison would suck.

But other than that I'd love to see what new shit humans invent after my normal lifetime. Maybe even travel and explore space.

The best immortality would be invincibility that you can control. If you want to die, you could turn it off.

You'll get to an age where you see on the news "27 innocent women and 56 orphans killed and skinned alive for recreational puposes" and you'll go "Seen worse"
