But seriously, this is one of the best mods i have seen in a LONG TIME. I'm extremely picky when it comes to Gmod addons.

Cannot wait to get my hands on it :smug:

oh also, you should make sure to add a wireable version so you can turn it on and off for docking and things, like you said in OP.

In response to all the "this makes me want to play gmod again" -- I feel the exact same way. I was bored of pretty much everything and lua was the only thing that kept me even remotely interested. But then I got thinking, "why am I bored of gmod? what's it missing?" My answer was pretty much that by no fault of garry himself, the physics in gmod are utterly horrible. Source wasn't designed to do what spacebuilders (among others) expect it to do. Having realized this I was in an odd position of not wanting to play the game due to an impossible-to-fix problem-- and yet being intrigued by the lua challenge of actually FIXING the problem. The whole clone of the ship idea isn't really a new one, but nobody had applied it to this before and especially not with such a robust all-encompassing "just put something into it" system, so I wrote a... get this... 600 line luapad script to prove it was possible. It worked, but I couldn't make it stop rendering duplicates of every single entity on the map due to the method I was using, and numerous other problems caused to seem like it was still just out of reach for lua coders. Then a few weeks ago after playing portal 2, the developer commentary node about the physics challenge in the opening sequence reminded me of the mod, and I thought "that thing was cool. I should so finish that." And somehow all the conditions were right and I started fixing one major problem after another, until I got the Gravity Hull Designator. It's leaps and bounds more stable than it was last month, and there are only a few problems left to face and none of them are as intimidating as before.

As for a place to test, there is a server running it but I'm a little hesitant to post the IP without asking the admin, since there are so many people in the thread right now. It is mentioned somewhere in my wiremod topic though if you want to hunt through 45 pages-- it's near the end though. It is true that you can email/PM me to get a copy of the code early, but I can't guarantee that it won't explode until tomorrow.

Anyhow I'm simultaneously excited, humbled, and honored by all the attention and winner tags and stuff. I guess I've forgotten how groundbreaking it is for the most part-- I mean, it's been sitting on my hard drive for a year now never fully working, so I kind of got used to the idea of it and just wished it actually worked. Now it does. Thanks for the interest and support :)

EDIT: Nevermind, admin permission: SERVER IP! 184.172.12.37:27015

SuperLlama... this mod is like Wiremod or PHX: a total game changer. I don't think even you fully realize what people are going to pull off with this.

I don't think I can thank you enough... all I can do is promise my friends and I are going to play the shit out of this.

I have never done spacebuild or any "serious" sandbox-hazard gamemode, yet even to me this seems EXTREMELY useful for other things too.

Imagine trains and such, you can stand on them going full speed. And rollercoasters too!

The only thing I'm worried about is all this hype. Do you know how stable it is yet SuperLlama? Is it feasible for 20-30 players to use this at the same time? It's immense and definitely a game changing feature, but I don't want to get too excited too early.

It's been pretty stable in my testing with lots of people, but I've only tested with about 8. It lags a bit more than normal but not much more than if everyone had built a car. It's been properly lag compensated since the first tests were done on a listen server where everyone lagged horribly. It has teleport protection due to the SetPos packet being lost sometimes, and all in all is quite stable when nobody flies a 1000-constraint E2-powered partially holographic helicopter into a gravity hull. So basically yes, it is stable in multiplayer, but I've not had the opportunity to test it with massive amounts of people.

You're moving the player to a different space and rendering the entities manually, right? Something like what Valve did in the Portal 2 intro? I've worked on localized physics a bit too, but my approach is way different. Instead of the rendering technique, I'm modifying player movement. The original source code is easily available, so it's easy to base the code on that.

You can minimize lag by parenting every decorative prop to 1 single "main" prop and then using the tool on it. That way, if (for example) you have a car, only 5 props are moving: The main prop and the four wheels.

Did your way handle gravity on all non-frozen props inside the area? If you take a prop and place it on the floor of your vehicle, it won't fly away with this mod. Although your way is probably much less complex and less demanding for the server... Maybe it's possible to combine the two: If there are no non-frozen entities in the area except players, use your way, else use SuperLlama's. If that lags less at all.

That's one problem I haven't bothered looking into yet. Player movement is my priority, since I'm making this for different purposes that SuperLlama. Also, his method doesn't work for walking on brushes, so wall walking up a building isn't possible.

    First thing I thought of.
I actually thought of Portal, what with the way you're re-oriented when the gravity changes, but that part in the third video does remind me of Prey

You could easily spawn an invisible PHX plate and use that to emulate walking on a brush.

Nah, trace in front of the player and if the trace normal is > 20 degrees, spawn a plate under the player just in front of them or something.

It's going to be released TOMORROW??
    This IS no-doubt a game-changer.
With what I saw BlackOps doing with the portal stuff in his map (I believe he did something like that, right?), I can only imagine what could be done with this as one day maybe a tool in maps for setting gravity on objects.
Maybe the next kind of Spacebuild with actual planets is getting closer again..
