Quebec's students general strike is grinding into gear.

We will make the provincial g.v.t back down.

Aren't your tuition fees some of the lower ones?

IMO it's Ontario that should be doing something like a strike, I had to pay 10 grand this year for tuition. AND the government went back on a promise (big fucking surprise the Grits lied) to drop fees 30%.

    Alberta is so fucking windy.

    And cold. And dry.
It isn't all that cold here, then again I live in Calgary, and when I think about it my skin has been terribly dry since I started working outside.

Our fees are the lower one in Canada and we plan to keep it that way. Every first world country should strive for lower fees. It's that one thing that make social mobility not a dream as in the US of A , but a true fact happening all around Québec and other nations with low fees to no fees at all.

I'm all for Ontario students striking too.

So a few weeks ago I e-mailed Vic Toews about C-11 and C-30, and got an automated response a few days later. Today, a few weeks later, I find that the e-mail landed in the hands of the NDP, and I got a prefab from their interim leader. Surprised me a little.

All I really know of Toronto is that it's big, and the mayor sucks. But a lot of Canadian cities seem to have shitty mayors.

It's a city, like any other city. Cost of living in Toronto is expensive, as to be expected in the largest city and the centre of the nation's economy. It has a lot of shit to do, never a dull moment if you know where to look, drinking age is 19, they're talking about building a casino downtown, and the public transit system, the TTC, is shitty, slow, and inefficient.

Winters are generally lows of -15 in the day and -25 at night, though the last few winters, especially this one, have been really mild, the lowest point I can remember was -14 (Celsius for temperatures). Nobody can drive in the winter, it's like people forget how to use a car. The roads get icy and slushy and snowy and the ploughs take forever to run. Summers tend to be around 25 to 35 in the day, and 15 to 25 in the night, and smoggy.

Traffic is bad, the roads are shitty, generally only 1 lane of most 2-lane streets gets by due to people parking in the other, even during rush hour when they're not supposed to. The old mayor further constricted roads by putting in random bike lanes that lead to nowhere and don't connect to each other, some starting and ending within less than a block (Dundas bridge over the Humber in Etobicoke). Despite that, the city has many nice parks and good bike paths. Don't ever use the Bixie bike rental service, it's a ripoff.

There's plenty of tourist-y stuff to do, like see one of our local sports teams at a local stadium, go up the CN tower, head north to Vaughan and go to Canada's Wonderland, visit any of the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Nathan Phillips Square and City Hall, Old City Hall, Queen's Park and Provincial Parliament, Ontario Place on the lakefront, the Toronto Islands, the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Mill St. Brewery, Yonge-Dundas Square and the Eaton Centre, downtown Toronto's main and largest mall, and the only remaining memorial to the Eaton department store chain, you could take a tour of the city on the Hippo-Bus, an amphibious bus ride that takes you around downtown and in the water on the lakefront, but costs an assload. Of course, there's probably plenty more to do, I just can't think of it right now.

I don't understand why Torontonians say that the TTC is bad. You guys have the best transit system throughout the whole GTA (probably throughout Canada). If you miss one bus, there's one trailing along in minutes. I just really envy you guys.

I do agree with you with the streets but when comes rush hour, I'd rather drive in-city; chances are, I'll reach faster.

There's also Caribana,Street Festival(?) The EX, Second City, numerous events throughout the city in the summer and winter.

Because that bus is supposed to be there in a few minutes, but in reality it takes a HALF HOUR and then, I shit you not, 7 FUCKING BUSSES show up. That, and the old dipshit mayor wanted to fuck traffic up by putting dedicated LRT on a bunch of streets not wide enough for it, and some of his cronies on council are still trying. The subway is small and dirty, we're still using subways from the '70s on the main 2 lines, mixed in with some from '95 and 4 from last year on the yellow line. Bloor-Yonge station is so packed at rush hour I sometimes have to wait for 3 trains to pass, and then I'm so squished in I feel like I'm in Tokyo. The TTC is inefficient and they want to expand it, they need to optimize what we already have. We need a downtown relief subway line from the east end, something about east end Toronto makes people want to flee it en masse, and that clogs up the subway, and rather than more LRT down the middle of streets too small for it, that would fuck traffic patterns up, we need either better bus service, more subways, or Elevated Rail, a possibility city council apparently hasn't even thought about.

How it works here in Edmonton is that the buses cycle every 15-30 minutes. So if you miss a bus then there'll be one in either 1/2 an hour or 15 minutes [depending on the day, they change it around]

usually takes 15 minutes at most though.

That happened with York Region Transit; they went on strike for quite a while. Luckily the TTC is now an essential service and can't strike.

That's what's probably going to happen here. The city is refusing to cooperate, and the union keeps making themselves look worse and losing the public's support.

I have to miss class here and there because I can't afford to keep cabbing across town 3-4 times a week.
