We make ginger beer around here. Not that high in alcohol but if it's left at room temp for a few days it gets a kick.

More just make it because we like ginger beer.

Depends on what country do you live in. I think it is illegal in European Union countries and the US, not sure about the others. It's still legal to make all types of alcoholic drinks in non-union countries like Croatia for example, and everyone makes it when they can there.

I found a bottle of mountain dew that had been under my friends for years and it had turned into alcohol.

In the UK you can manufacture as much as you want as long as you aren't selling it.

It is not illegal to make your own alcohol, it is illegal however to distil for consumption without a licence.

Just remember being careful... You would'nt want it to turn into Methanol. You won't be able to tell whether it is Methanol or Ethanol. There's a lot of sweds and norwegian fellas who have died by drinking it.

    So... Just be careful.

Simple solution then, exploit methanols higher boiling point and boil it off, then you are left with only the ethanol.

That's cool. How long is his fermentation time?
I don't know, 4 - 5 months ? He is making it like from the apples from our own yard. And can you tell the freezer stuff, what makes it up to 80% vol?
( btw, he is making about 40 litres )

Could have tried to sound less smart and said "Distill it"...

Oh and the boiling point of methanol is lower than ethanol.

I wonder of you could use this as fuel for a homemade flamethrower. That would be cool lighting shit on fire saying "I used apples to burn this"

Going to go out on a limb and say when he freezes it the non-alcohol freezes yet the alcohol is probably still a liquid. Allowing him to pour off the concentrated alcohol.

Don't take anything I say as fact unless you look it up and verify it yourself. That just seems the most logical explanation to me.

It wouldn't be practical, you could use other compounds far easier, like petrol and then say "I burned this using the flesh and bones of long dead dinosaurs"

Unless you don't know how to make a good starter, distilling it without getting methanol is pretty easy, just throw away everything that is distilled before the temprature reaches 78.1 C as a safety precaution.

The stuff is taste altogether, we have a few litres lying around in empty whiskey bottles you could use it as antifreeze in winter guaranteed to knock you off your arse.

They used to use them as Molotovs too. But have a taste, just a shot glass worth. You wont be any worse for it. Now if you grab the bottle and try to down it thats harmless too, because it will come up just as fast as you drink it down.

From the stories my granddad told me. He used to make the stuff when they where 19-20, as they where too poor to go to the pub. Several times they either blew up the shed or set it on fire (not sure how, he never said) but anyway, he used to sell the stuff to members of the IRA. Or so he said.

Im also brewing my own cider but only on a fairly small scale (3 Gallon Batches), I would highly recommend using a wine yeast as this produces a greater alcohol yield, please note this does make the finished product a lot less sweet :) happy brewing !
