This has been a real problem I've noticed lately, although it's not a big one, it shouldn't really be around.

Lets take a look at the Spore icon.

Okay, it's the spore logo, transparent, represents the game just fine.

    Re-sizes fine, it's a 256x256 icon.

Now lets take a look at the Modern Warfare 2 icon.

Not the best, it's just the logo in a cut box, flat square, no transparency.

Okay I guess, it looks horrible re-sized, they obviously started off with a small image and expanded it to make it 256x256.
But think of how much money was spent on this game, they couldn't be asked to make a decent looking icon? It's literally just "Open ms paint, fill with black, copy-paste logo on top"

    Now the worst example.

    TES4 Oblivion, WHAT THE FUCK.

Look at this shit, it looks like they cut it out with a pair of jagged scissors!

    It doesn't even re-size properly, it's locked at 16x16 like a windows 98 icon!
And Oblivion was supposed to be a "PC-focused game"

Here's a comparison of 4 game icons, the "evolution" of icons.

On the left, Deus Ex and Half-Life, released in 2000 and 1998.

On the right, Crysis and Oblivion, released in 2007 and 2006.
Seriously? It takes FIVE MINUTES in Photoshop to properly cut out a logo or symbol or whatever they want, and then save it as an ico, it's not something you can blame on "they wanted to focus on the console version" because if they couldn't be asked to spend a few minutes in Photoshop on their game then why did they even release it.

Maybe making the icon look good doesn't happen often because it has to be one of the least important parts of development.

Plus some icons do look good, albeit simple. Like the GTAIV icon.

The MW2 icon looks better as a larger icon, honestly.

I like the Fallout 3 Icon

    Edited:

But developers should at least make 256x256 so my desktop doesn't look like shit

    I agree with Amez aswell.
But seriously, this is a, to be honest, really silly thing to whine about. It's not like you'll be sitting at your computer just looking at the icon.

I keep all my non-steam game shortcuts in a folder so I don't have to look at the fugly ones all the time.

Age of Empires 1 has a god awful icon, its a low res helmet which I understand being an old game but the top of the helmet is cut off! Its the official icon /faceplam

If you're trying to make a great-looking desktop, then the icons would matter.

Because most icons are designed for a 32x32 resolution(the standard icon size). I'm organizing my games shortcuts in the startmenu games folder, no big deal, because the icon size there is 16x16. I just hate icons on my desktop.

Yes, this is really what we need to be complaining about with some of the developers we have around.

Does anyone really give a shit? I don't care if the game has no fucking icon as long it's a good, solid piece of work.

Or go in properties and change the icon the executable uses.

Lord of the Rings games icons always annoy me, yes we get it, it's focused on a bloody ring!

Also, non-transparent icons annoy me if they don't have backgrounds.

Oblivion's icon is 32x32. Displays fine on my XP where every other icon is the same. Not so well on my W7.

Oblivion's was never supposed to look good big. The game is from 2005. Vista was released in 2006, so it only was supposed to look good as a tiny desktop icon.
It gets the point across. It's recognisable. No problem.

It's also one of the easiest so if you'll only be spending 5 minutes on it, spend those 5 minutes on making it look good, k.

Though something like Crysis does have a large icon for the games explorer. Like so:

This. XP did not support icons bigger than 32x32, which Oblivion is. Vista added support for larger icons.
