I was wondering how these machinimas occasionaly have that frontal focus where the person is the only thing unblurred and the background has this amazing blur to it?

    Three ways to do this:

    1) In-game depth of field postprocessing (if you're talking about Gmod)
    2) Manually layer depth of field behind the focused thing
    3) Chroma key the subject, blur the layer behind him

they just dont work, i know its lame. i've tried using camera tool then record it just doesn't work, what you have to do is record either into avi or into .tga files LIVE WITHOUT the demo as in when you're actually playing the game and ready to record.

so once you're ready to record in-game type into console

    startmovie name avi
    OR
startmovie name (this will record your .tga screenshots for virtualdub)

another way is to use Demo Smoother which is hard to use and i wouldn't use it if you're making machinima by yourself cause you can't see your own player model.

ok so thats how you do it, I have no problem doing it live as I had been with FRAPs, its what I expected actually. And I can use a camera as I did here just not any type of moving camera:

and one more thing, me and my freind for the like of us cant connect with eachother i've tried everything. is there anyway of finding someone generous enough to let us use their servers? Cause i need a partner in this.

Way to many problems, to much hassle, UNLESS! you are filming a explosion, but even then if you got a good computer you can film alot of explosions at once.

Wegame, or fraps is your best choice.

I'm confused, I thought you would agree with using source recorder.

imo source recorder gives you best quality & framerate. (even though its a large file)

    I get 60-100.

You have to remember, you shouldn't get into machinma if you have a shitty computer.

ah, because you are suppose to select Uncompressed. dont encode it. just make sure you have a massive Hard drive. cause those video clips are about 500mb - 2gb

    Edited:

and this is why source recorder is there, for the low-ends to high ends.

nonono on Video > Compression click Uncompressed.

and just if you didnt know, change your framerate to 30fps (Video > Framerate) and the colour depth (Video > Colour Depth) should be "24-bit RGB (888)"

and it should be on Full-Processing Mode not direct stream copy for video.
