Whoa, that's damn cool looking. Great posing and editing. The texturing's really nice and I love the asteroid ring (That must have taken a while). The only things that I imagine could use some improvements would be the stars (something about them doesn't seem quite right. Maybe space could be more black, or the stars could be smaller or something. And the planet maybe could be giving off more glow... But those are nitpicks. Overall it looks very solid.

The asteroid belt is a multitude of stock images on multiple layers, with cloud brushes and smoke reference pictures used in-between each of these layers for the dust effect.

Well, all modern guns use controlled chemical explosion, so no external oxygen is needed. They fire underwater, so they would fire in space. They would actually probably work better in space, as there would be no drag.
