    I'm looking for some people who are interested in world war 2 vehicular combat to help stress test a new concept game mode played out in contraption fights. We help need to prove the claims it can withstand 8 vs 8 players all using contraption vehicles without lag. In the process we are hoping to find some people who might become interested in the project.     Perhaps not that 4 vs 4 but the next 4 vs 4 might lag even a 2 vs 2 could lag it depends on how powerful the server is and if source is in a good mood. You'll probably fail though.

    I know this sounds like blasphemy but, please stop prejudging the project, your perception gmod vehicular combat is most likely not equivalent of the project.     i was there with him testing it and there was no lag whatsoever 4 vs 4... and if you dont care then why say anything? really its not hard. anyway we did this on a hamachi server, so i think a dedicated server would be able to handle up to 8 vs 8 or even more

    What gets me is why you decided this should go in contraptions.

    A vague description won't catch many peoples attention, most decent people will immediately see there are no pictures or videos or anything, see that there's only 3 lines of writing and leave.

    We are not looking forward to being flooded by the general public players, this project is not about appealing to everyone. I posted it in the contraptions section because the game mode is revolving around contraptions and not a death match derma game mode.

    Depending on prop limits and what types of contraptions people may build, it could get pretty laggy if there weren't fairly strict limits.

    It wouldn't lag even with 10 vs 10 when everyone would use a 1x2 phx plate with wheels thrusters and gcombat gun on it.

    Yeah claiming a WW2 vehicular battle would require the vehicles to "look" like vehicles from ww2. No way you can get that sort of detail in anything 8 times in a server and have them move/fight.

    Example of a WW2 tiger tank in gmod.

    Even two <150 prop tanks can be stressful for a server. Unless it's something like a dual quad-core server with near limitless RAM, I can't easily see this working well under any circumstances.

    However, if you're certain you have a way to make something like that work I'm mildly interested.

    On servers, FPS lag usually isn't the problem, it's connectivity...server has too much data in and out, you get Internet lag. Internet lag = things jump around, movement is jerky, hitbox issues, Physics problems...FPS lag = less FPS...

    Talking to one of your "testers", The netgraph Spiked at 1000 at 2, 8 tanks = 4000-5000 on the netgraph. That would be Internet lag, lots of it...Not FPS lag. FPS lag != Internet lag...

    Plus, they're microscopic, and that's no fun :(

    A few years ago, i was in a spacebuild 2 server and we build a 10000+ prop deathstar with ~120 people

    Server had dual i5(I think) and 48gb ddr3 ram :D. (Falcos prop saver ftw.)

    And i still have ~200 ping and ~100 fps

    edit; And about 500 in (Not 2000 like that tank)

    Possibly because it was static. And even more possibly that just didn't happen (proofnaokthx), it's just impossible that GAME ENGINE can handle so much bullcrap.

    First off.. A few years ago... dual i5's......... fail

    Secondly, There is a source entity limit of I believe 2048 Dynamic Props.

    Thirdly, Only with the latest update can 128 people join the same server. Old limit was 80.

    Now please correct my errors.

    fatal error in your post, may i correct

    i5 is just out in this month, no way it could be on the server you were playing for; i quess it was an core 2 quad or a duo

    and ddr3 ram was very rare at that time, it costed a fuckload of money so i really doubt that you had that too on the server you played on.

    oh and fps doesn't matter, the only thing matters is the fact of net lag and how many calculations the server has to make per prop.

    2048 per user; a 10k prop something would be impossible to construct unless you made it from fucking 1x1 plates

    also, gmod is capped in bandwidth, this just can't happen

    As far as I know, Gmod doesn't work on multicores... I have a Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 @ 2.5 ghz laptop, 2 cores and it runs on only 1 core. that might be different for servers. what size are the tanks your making? I can't imagine 16 full size fully detailed tanks shooting each other on a server with no lag, video or internet.

    And no. To test, download dildo's mini-tank thing and paste it 8 times then invite 8 people. Good luck and btw you good ass computer faggots, when you have 800 bazillion props and you finally start to lag, you can slow gamespeed with some command I forgot, it will increase the fps and be all slow motion and shit. It makes less calculations/second or something.

    Rofl. Most servers run empty at 150-200 in. Most of my tanks keep it under 2000 in (on a good day). Then again my tanks are mechanical wonders vs looking good.

    Testing the old TT.com servers. Spawned several of my laggiest contraptions all at once. Had 10,000 in pretty constantly.

    Of course, if you could edit the GMod code and make a 1000 in contraption lag like a 200 in one on any server any time, you would be deemed a god. I've known modders who push a game to it's perceived limits, and often blow past the perceived. That, or make parented props 100% lagless without impairing functionality.

    That. OP I firmly believe it's doable, however you'd have to optimize GMod. And I'm sure that if you did optimize it so much that this were possible without ANY lag or not-currently-existing downsides, Garry would be happy to adopt your system over his current one (well, he might not be happy but all the advanced builders on FP would be ripping their heads off and throwing them at him if he didn't)

    It would be optimized so much that it would turn into a playstation. And then you would play video games.

    Anyway, I guess this thing was just a troll or something? To be honest, you can make good contraptions with few props for multi-player, you just need to skimp on detail.
