i found that the Xfire video recorder has the least effect on fps in gmod for me

I recommend xfire also, it's free. Also, it's gamers must-have.

Source Recorder is the best free one, but I'd go with Fraps. It isn't free, but it is extremely easy to record a movie - just a matter of pushing a single keyboard key to record footage w/ sound.

Utterly late and a bit of a bump with the guy up there, but source recorder is the best. You can record massive fps dropping explosions and make it run at 30fps no problem, trick people into believing you have a epically powerful computer! While keeping your smooth turns. ;)

Source Recorder for slower computers. (Records in HD, depends on the codec you use for it.)
WeGame & Fraps for higher computers. (These record in HD, WeGame also features a lower quality recording to save processing power)
