These could be delivered to Rust island via airdrop, so be careful when approaching landing crates! When destroyed (which is very difficult) they can be harvested for scrap metal, gun barrels and receivers, bullets, wires and batteries, and metal spear tips. All of these items can be used for crafting higher tier guns, alarm systems, salvaged icepick and axe, and other stuff that hasn't been thought of. Oh, and feel free to add cucumbers and/or dolphins to this.

Once dropped if there are no people the Caretaker will roam the biome they're in searching for a target. Once a player gets within a certain range of the Caretaker it will lock on and follow them until they engage the target or lose it. If a player is followed into their base the Caretaker will be begin demolishing the base until it gains entry, is destroyed, or the player runs and lures it away.

Used for population control, mega-base management, and the inability of others to work together.

I'd like to mutate the caretaker, i don't like robots or zombies i see em too often in games.

If a robot was walking around in Rust for very long periods of time, it stands to reason that it would possibly be affected by radiation and the environment. Other creatures would also be mutated by the radiation, this could cause it to attack the Caretaker at come point.

The diseased mutants DNA would be left on the Caretaker at some point during a battle, the disease would fester and grow quickly. After some time it would be large enough to hijack the host, and take it over for itself. It would hook itself into the Caretakers infinite power supply to effectively gain control and create its mutated shape using organic material on the Caretaker and around it.

My example shows that its been around long enough that the mutation has attached itself to the Caretaker and taken over it like a parasite.

Its a combination of human and bear DNA as well as environmental biological matter, trees, leaves and rocks for example. This helps it camouflage itself in the Rust environments. It can quickly grow more vegetable matter or even expand its left arm to create a Shield of wood and rock material.

It's usual tactic is to squat down like a bush, and sprout leaves all over, or make itself look exactly like a resource boulder, upon hearing an approaching victim it attacks as soon as the victim is close.

The large blisters on its back expel radiation to deter close combat battles and affect any enemy.
On the right hand side is a biologic machine gun that shoots radiated rock bullets created organically by the parasite.

The robotic legs give the Caretaker extreme speed and leaping abilities.

why limit ourselves to *one* type of enemy?

Why not a swarm of flesh eating radioactive flies in one of the crates, or a mutated/geneticaLLY engineered beast in the next one, and so on and so forth...

I'm a fan of the classic bears and wolves, natural vanilla animals. Robots, zombies, mutants, all of them leave a sour taste to the game in my opinion.

I really like the Caretaker idea. The animals just aren't that much of a threat at this point I think. Maybe the rad animals will be, but we'll see. I'm not sure about really weird mutated creatures though. I also don't have a problem with zombies, but I don't think they fit the game unless they're just kind of like wild animals that have been driven crazy by radiation. More like 28 Days Later style rather Night of the Living Dead kind.

There were some really awesome concepts for rad animals that I think they ought to pursue.

There are more somewhere, but I can't find them at the moment.

Okay I can understand zombies, but robots? I can only think of two games where robots feature prominently in the game: Fallout and Wolfenstein (I mean "The New Order")

This makes no sense, mutants will be much better these robots.

Robot tech would be much scarier than mutants.... because robots don't BLEED. Plus all the salvage potential adds some depth there and another sort of 'hard' raid.

To fit in with the desolate and abandoned nature in Rust then they'd need more moss/crap/rust - very broken but lethal.

Okay fine. Name more than 5 games where robots are the main enemy for at least half the game within the past 10 years?

    You can't.

Actually they make a lot more sense than Mutants. These robots are trying to protect stuff from the old world. They were probably activated before the apocalyptic event occurred and are thus running off of old programming to keep the old resources safe.
And how would mutants be any better than zombies in homes?

Also for the all of you in general saying mutants and responding to the robot argument with "They are overused":
You do realize that literally every post-apocalyptic game has mutants right?

In all honesty, I think a combination of mutated creatures and robots would be awesome.

I don't find robots scary at all i found them rather empty and boring, there's nothing scary about them at all, i consider Robots the PG rating enemy, what they use if they want Kids to play the game without parents raising a fuss because of blood. Its also why i don't like watching Mecha Anime, though i do have a spot in my heart for Voltron.
The best and scariest NPC of any game lately has been the creepy cannibal tribal's in the game The Forest, they were bloody scary, the way they were so damn fast running around up and down trees, crouching from a distance,....watching you....waiting... you couldn't take your eye off them because if you did they would attack, and if one did successfully the whole mob would join in. This why i prefer an NPC enemy or caretaker that's half alive and half machine as i suggested earlier with the concept art, because that's far more scarier than just a machine. A robot is about as scary as a vacuum cleaner.

Protect what? There's barely anything left just a bunch of ruins, they really failed in their job then didn't they?, its clear we're pretty much wiped out so whats there to protect against too? not only that, robots being obviously electrical objects would be affected by radiation and weather effects, these would be the prime enemies of the machines. having a combination of machine and mutant sounds like a far more logical and plausible idea.

I like to think that somewhere on Rust there is clone machine which the previous occupants left behind in order to one day start the human species again, the machine creates clones and spawns them into the Rust world, the strong will survive and carry the seeds to a new society. But the Caretakers have failed in their job to protect humans, their world and the remains by being taken over by mutants, so the clone machine has kicked up the spawning in order to restore the caretakers role and clean the world of the Mutant threat.

I posted an idea a long time ago about each biome having a different PVE NPC element, caretakers being a top-tier NPC. The idea being that they are defective ancient Aztec technology that went haywire and began hacking up and retrofitting everybody into mindless cyborg minions until there weren't any living azteks left, and went into hibernation until uncovered/reawakened by whatever cataclysm resulted in the rust island scenario...

in game they'd have a fortified biome that they capture payers and drag them back to in order to hacksaw into their heads for retrofitting with their mind-control hoodoo, but players would have a chance to cut free from their nets and try and escape while being hauled in.

    What about Rad-Newmans

Have radiated Newmans spawn in the rad towns and they run around and attack any one and anything (buildings)

Maybe if any player dies from radiation they turn into a Rad-newman. Fuse their hands with a weapon. Maybe if they had explosives on them they turn into a bomb.

I love the idea of all of them in the game.
As someone has mentioned about having different mobs for different areas, so mutant bosses for rad town areas, mutated dogs etc for general open areas and robots for old world missions.

If not that then the fact rust is based way way way into the future and with all the radiation they could really come up with anything they wanted, even alien looking creatures if they wanted as everything evolves and they could even put a spin on the story that before the world went to pot humans experimented with genetic mutations and splicing. Could even throw in alien dna found on another planet/asteroid/ship remains/whatever and that got out.

Hey i love the idea of the caretaker? but is there any possible way in a dev blog, Or community Blog. that we can have another vote on what kind of NPC's we think WE may like in rust? This is a very touchy subject to me, I feel like the NPC's have the potential to prove to the world that this is not your every day run of the mill game. This is rust, I loved the idea's on Mythical Creatures! Aliens..ect.
The caretaker seems amazing, but that's a side event NPC...Even just a bit of talk about where the future might lead for non player characters would really expand on how great rust can, and hopefully will be...in our future! Lets fill these lands with things to hunt or be hunted bye besides player interaction. Good Luck and i am excited to see the caretaker wreck houses...maybe he can tell when houses have no loot and players have been gone, he can be clean up crew! Or i was thinking Tornado's that suck up anything NOT stone...

    Edited:

I could see rust being an alien planet...crazy star's and planets in the sky...Aliens wandering, small ship landings...see the ships can be where the loot is at, and they guard it, it could tie into any robots that would walk the land. as cool as that sounds...what about mythical creatures? I love building castles and the unique variety of mythical creatures are ENDLESS!!!! not to mention unique...maybe throw in some swords for people who would like to Roleplay MOD Medieval times server?
