    I've been playing 'new' Rust a lot more the last couple weeks than legacy for the first time, and I am genuinely impressed how much it has progressed in just the last month alone.

    Overall performance is greatly improved, for one.

    Melee PvP is challenging and not nearly as prone to network issues as it once was (much fewer magic hits and people skipping around). Ranged PvP still has some challenges, but hopefully the impending recoil updates will make being the target of a thompson a little less insta-death.

    The new building mechanism is interesting and provides for much more flexibility. The cupboard is good and bad IMO, but I think it's a net positive so far, and could be balanced with just a few tweaks in how it works.

    When rad towns, loot barrels, and blueprints go live (whether this Friday or later), I would expect to see the beginnings of the shift of the player base from legacy to 'new' Rust. I'm the early adopter of my group, and some of the folks I play with that are still on legacy have said they are willing to give it a go when these changes are released.

    I've always figured it would get there eventually, but the recent progress has made me excited again!

    I just came back after getting burned out on the C4 deadlock of legacy, and I'm also very happy with how the main branch is now. It still has its share of issues, and I feel like it's about on par with legacy as far as playability. But the mainline's procedurally generated maps are a HUGE game changer (literally), and even though there's still a point where there's no real progression, I'm still racking up the hours.

    A++++++++++, would naked again!

    If they can get the map/feel right and on par with Legacy it will be great.

    Yep, I played for the first time in months, very pleased with performance and gameplay. They are going in the right direction in my opinion. Excited to see what happens in the next few months.

    What do you mean? Do you not like the procedurally-generated maps?

    IIRC the devs are working on more landmarks, but until then you can navigate pretty effectively with things like "lighthouse in the river" and "lighthouse in the lake", or "satellite dish in the desert" and "satellite dish with a lighthouse close by". Combined with the sun and mountains to the north, it's not hard to get around.

    I will say I would be open to rudimentary vehicles like wooden bicycles. But they'd have to tread carefully here because that could quickly and massively change the entire scope of the game. Maybe a wooden bike with a 25% boost to sprint speed to let you navigate the map more quickly, but that's it.

    I personally love the idea of procedural maps, but in its current form with no map system of any kind, it makes navigation a complete chore.

    Having us all spawn on the beach helps, but I still find it confusing to get around the map of a server.

    I think having a map system would help things tremendously. It doesn't have to be elaborate and have everything on it from the get go. Hell, have it be sort of like Minecraft's map making system where you add things as you go along. Maybe name settlements or areas on it as you come across them.

    Yes, if the map were introduced such that only explored areas were mapped, or if the user had to pause every so often to update the map, I could go with that. The one thing I want to avoid is handing everyone a map as soon as they hit the server. It's supposed to be challenging, just like if you woke up naked on a strange beach IRL. Navigation isn't hard once you've explored the island, as long as you remember that the sun rises in north and sets in the east, and the snowy mountain is to the west and the desert is to the southeast.

    That pic is from the mindmap, so expect it to be added when it's time for a map.

    Yes, we all know what that is.
