Recently started playing again and noticed the official servers only have about 5 people... ever. What's up with that?

mod servers tend to be easier to test the new functions on, whereas the official servers are very much vanilla. also mod/community servers tend to be more reliable, the official ones being down more often.
personally i play on both:)

Legacy: Durability is the main reason I didn't play on the official servers. I hated it and it ruined vanilla servers for me. Remove is another huge want for me. It's too easy to misplace a pillar or wall etc and ruin a base. Admin--to ban hackers.
New Rust: Teleport is a necessity for me since I play with friends. It's near impossible to meet up with a friend on these maps. I no longer need remove with cupboard. Gather x3 or 5 is important with the new patch screwing up gathering. Hackers aren't a problem (yet). I've ran into one. They are still in Legacy.

Wow, Katy Perry plays Rust! Cool... lol
OP, a week or two ago, the Official servers were not very stable, they would boot everyone off every 10 mins, and got wiped almost every day, so every time you logged on your stuff was gone. Plus they are often not online for days at a time, so it is hard to get any consistent play on them. Some of the community servers are better maintained, and more reliable, so that is also a reason people moved across. (I personally don't play the modded servers).
