Hello survivors,
First I was playing since this week at Legacy, because the new Rust wasn't launching at all, then I discovered it was because I was using 32 bits by doing a file rust (on the new rust executable).
The supports, as I expected, told me there is no other options than using 64 bits system, so I reinstalled my Kubuntu 14.10 to 64 bits. Plus with the symlink for the libraries the game start.
But this is the problem: using a NVidia 9600GS, I can't play properly at the new Rust (I'm using the recommanded proprietary driver), even if I put Fastest and use F2 options to put everything on minimal, with 800*600: still too laggy to play well.
So I want to stay on Legacy, but since I'm on a 64 bits Kubuntu, Steam doesn't show me the launcher anymore. If I try: ./rust.x86 (in the Legacy folder, I installed the 32 bits libraries as well) a window with the facepunch logo is here, but nothing more. The game never start.
So, from Steam I've no launcher (and I can't run the game), from the terminal it doesn't works (stuck at facepunch logo window).
Also I tried several betas (all, in fact) and well nothing works. As removing the game and the folder under SteamApps/common, re-installing. Nothing works.
After some quick looking on Internet, and this forum, I didn't found an answer to my problem. And since we're in week-end the support will not answer me until monday.
If you have an idea....
Koshie

Just did a reinstall and am having the same issue getting legacy to launch. It looks like in the legacy rust folder there is rust.x86 which i assume is the 32 bit version. Can't get it to launch though on my mint 16 install.

Answer from the support, we're screwed. They don't want to support Legacy anymore EVEN if some peoples still play and can't do the new Rust.
I wait an answer, but if that's true Rust will be the last game I paid to Facepunch. Ever.
Basically, I paid this game to help, now they fuck me.

Uh, legacy hasn't been supported since February.
Experimental is the way forward. The game's in alpha. Linux users are a low single-digit percentage of the userbase and I don't think they have any Linux experts on the coding team at the moment, so it's not the current priority (more time fighting inexpertly with the Linux build = less time spent moving the state of development forward). However, I'm pretty sure Linux support isn't permanently dropped, it's just a lower priority. Mac support is in a similar boat but the client still mostly works, most of the time.

I know about the priority for Linux, it's obvious. We're less than 2% on desktop, but, if they release it under free licence the game will not die, and peoples like me gonna still play. But well, I can still hope it'll probably never happend.
