Here is something that I haven't heard about in the discussion so far:

I believe that it would imensley improve teamwork and collaboration if there were certain items that act as an investment. Such items could be a sawmill, a better furnace, or a greenhouse.

People would need a lot of resources to build them, but once you have those items, they generate consumables much faster.

It might for example take 10000 Wood Planks to build a saw mill, but the sawmill itself can then be used to make 2 wood planks out of every piece of a raw wood.

A highe tier furnace can generate twice as much metal and sulfur.

A greenhouse could grow vegetables, but you need plenty of glass to build one.

These items would give players a goal to work towards and reward teamwork. This will also increase the rivalry between player groups to own a certain base.

Resource sinks that also provide some kind of return on investment would be huge in terms of creating server 'stickiness', promoting community, and generating conflict. Back when legacy was active, I proposed something similar, but having those things be fixed, pregenerated map items (with maybe requiring some kind of crafted or rare item to enable).

Letting the players build them would be much better as long as they were very expensive to build (that not every group on the map is able to build one easily). Maybe there could be requirements for their location, like sawmills could only be built next to a river or water feature?

    Really like this idea.

Great idea! Structures like this might do well to promote more communities. Something that the servers I've played on kind of lack. The social strata currently seems to be the largest group raids the hell out of everybody else smaller.

If I could be part of a community and help build this, or just have access to it by helping and protecting it that would be awesome.

A mine would be a good one too. Place it on the side of a hill or cliff and it creates a small cave with rock/metal nodes that respawn at a quicker pace than normal.

I really like the idea of mines and such so the players would fight each other again. But it would lead to big groups ownings those mines I guess

I like this idea. How about some sort of a "Fixed Gun" type thing? Like a giant crossbow for your base. Could deal loads of damage to stop raiders but will cost a lot of wood and iron.

nice idea but your missing something to balance the idea, you need a negative, a counteractive point to its positive, this would be its destruction, it needs to be destructible, a burnable saw mill or a collapsible mine. For every positive idea you have, sit back and think of the negatives. In a ying yang style balance. Therefore the negative gives more meaning to its value.

Why would you need a saw mill when you could recruit Newmans to help you gather resources, the is no end of Newmans wanting to be part of a group, the more Newmans you have, the more resources coming in, far more than a saw mill would provide, then you said a high tier furnace, why would we need that? i can just build ten furnaces, and provide far more resources than a higher tier furnace would, Then the green house, we don't need one, because we already have one, Rust, the world we play in. A veggie patch maybe but there's no need for a green house.

Most players just want to build a simple yet defendable place, then go raid, after that they no longer really need any more wood therefore the saw mill is not really needed the wood to make one can make a decent sized home.

Your ideas make me think of Life is Feudal, and makes me wonder if yer been playing it, after that you decided Rust needs that too. Dont worry i'm guilty of the same, i've been Far Cry 4, and i wish rust had Rhinoceros' so i could hunt them, hang gliding, gyrocopters, abseiling, really tall mountains and nasty from outta nowhere gonna claw the shit outta you tigers.

Maybe instead of learning the blueprints for items we should have all the machinery necessary :
    Furnace,
    Foundry,
    Lathe,
    Milling machine,
    etc.
