Is there a good way to build on slopes?

Once the elevation change is too much there doesn't seem to be any way to continue. You used to be able to place things "close enough" that players couldn't fit through the (incredibly ugly) gap but during some experiments tonight it seemed like there was a bigger buffer zone between non-connected parts and I could always walk through the gap. Is there some way to snap or position building elements along a slope that I am missing?

(if not, foundations on a higher level should snap to blocks or walls that are placed on a lower level foundation, and lower level foundations should snap so that walls or blocks placed on them connect to higher level foundations)

Some screenies to illustrate what you mean would help. I've only built a structure or two on a steep slope and none of them very complex, so I never came across that issue.

I will make some screenshots when I get home, but what I mean is a longer wall (maybe 10 units long as an example) on smooth rolling hills.

You might be able to place for example 4 foundations in a row but the 5th would either be underground or floating in the air, so you can't place it. There doesn't seem to be any way to connect/snap foundations/walls/blocks at different heights though. You have to place the next foundation unattached/unconnected and this leaves a gap that players can walk through.

Here are some screenshots of what I meant.

In the first image, you cannot continue the line of foundations in either direction. If you build uphill, the foundation is too low and would go into the ground. If you go downhill, the foundation is too high and would hover.

What you SHOULD be able to do is this...

These two images show how foundations would "snap" to the existing foundation "grid" but at a higher or lower height. It would make the most sense to allow for half (block) or full (wall) height snapping as this would let you cleanly and properly continue up or down a hill. That is what I'm TRYING to do at least.

Instead what I get is this...

I cannot "snap" the foundations together on the same grid. I can only place new foundations somewhat close. There seems to be a minimum distance or buffer zone, however, and regardless of the angle and movement there always seems to be a human-sized gap between the foundations. It just wont let me place them any closer and the large gaps make any wall on a slope somewhat pointless to build because anyone can walk right through it.

    really informative post, good job:)

i remember the staggered foundations being discussed a few months back, but can't remember if there was any dev input that it was based around. either way, there is no current method to work around it that i am aware of, you simply need to pick a site with less of an incline.

i think half height snapping would be useful, especially given that we have a half block that could be used flatten out the floor.

I'd love this so i can finally create walls around my base without the horrible gates and spikes i had to use to block it off.

    Agree.
We could build down hill in the last building system as the sloping foundations had working sockets, once the sockets are back, i should imagine we could just rotate them to build uphill.

the old thread for the old system is here

Nice post dude. I agree with you. There's been many times where I wish I could do what you're illustrating. Hopefully some day we will be able. I have faith.

Sorry for the delay in response. I've been busy the past few days, but now that you've posted screenies, I understand exactly what you mean and I agree. As a matter of fact, I noticed myself that you couldn't build staggered foundations as you've illustrated. Hopefully (and probably very likely) they'll implement this type of build mechanic once they've got everything straightened out. It would seem strange if they didn't. There are a lot of hills and sharp inclines in Rust, so being able to build on them in a sensible way seems to be key to the game. As fellow Ruster's have said above, good post.

You place a foundation step to the sides of your straight foundation path, the step is supposed to allow you to restart the foundation to the ground again.

anyone else noticed you can place foundations well under the ground, i stopped building near slopes when the new building system came in, but i was building a bridge today and i found i could place foundations more than a walls height under the terrain,

    (on dev branch)

Bump, I love the new building system. (no more pounding a hammer for 9000 minutes)

BUT that being said, the slope system needs a little work. And the stability system.

Have you played on the DEV branch, stability is a lot better, Only problems i have is the railings, i had a few disappear last night, But it was on a massive built.

Right click on rust in steam. Select properties. Select beta tab. Opt in to development from there

Long time ago I made this suggestion to. I think a lot of people wanted this, to make a mountain-kind-of-base.
