I've just been looking at the dev mindmap and...server transitioning...via sea?! That might be the single best idea I've seen for a game ever.

I imagine having to spend ages building a boat and collecting enough resources to make a journey to a new island, with each server being kind of like its own country with its own rules and laws.

But there are a couple of things to think about. First of all, where does everyone start out? Would you just start on a small raft in a massive ocean and wash up on a random server or would you have to input the IP of a server and then sail to the edge of the map to travel there? Personally, I like the idea of not knowing what kind of place you end up in and just being on a random server based on where the wind takes you.

I've also seen that certain servers are going to be rich in certain items. That could be really awesome, you might even end up with some inter-server economy system where server factions set up trade routes to get the materials they need and sell them on their own server in exchange for things like materials they've gathered or even protection against unfriendly players. Maybe by being a part of a coastal community, you'd get access to a resource that might be otherwise very hard to find on your island.

What happens to community and modded servers though? I can imagine this being a part of the official servers but, certain mods can affect the game in ways that completely change how it's played. It would be a great way to populate servers and get players to try new things, but what if you're banned from a server by an admin? You could end up losing all the stuff you've collected across several servers just because you pissed off the wrong guy or killed someone in a PvE server by accident.

This is all assuming that you'll actually be able to carry your items from server to server which could be severely messed up by mods like kits. I guess it will only be vanilla servers but by then hopefully there will be no need to mod the game because it will be so awesome.

Edit: In the vehicles section of the mindmap they're looking at island hopping by boat so it's definitely going to be something interesting.

The idea is old, I think it was first conceived in Tad Williams Otherland series, one of the greatest series I've ever read.
