After getting killed for the 1,000th time when I started out in this game, I kept getting respawned in the desert. Great! No animals to hunt so you can starve to death before you get to a decent hunting area. I can make a spear and a stone hatchet easy enough but with nothing to kill for food, what's the point? If you venture too far into the areas where there are animals at present, you can get killed by other players and being naked and already at low health, you don't stand much of a chance.
It would also make the desert a decent place to make a base. At the moment, the desert is desolate, nobody wants to make a base so far away from food resources.
The game also needs some smaller (consequently slower) animals you can hunt fairly easily at the beginning. Running halfway across the map after a single pig or deer isn't fun at all, especially when they take you too close to bears and wolves etc. A small amount of meat from a small animal and maybe 10 cloth and a bit of animal fat or so to get you started. At least you can then compete on a better level when you encounter other players.
That pretty much sums up what Rust is about. However, that doesn't mean there shouldn't be sort of safe areas away from the larger groups. When fishing gets added that will help a lot.
