So, I was exploring and a wolf started chasing me and took a nip. I kept running.. gave up after 5 minutes and became his lunch. rinse and repeat.

Rock wont kill it in time if your fresh spawn. Get wood and make a soear before anthing else. Stay away from animals until you have the spear then hunt the wolves

Try to find another fresh spawn. Then all you have to do is run faster than that other poor Newman.

other thing is to stay really close to trees and rocks while you are running past. animal pathfinding is often a little bit wider berth of objects than we can go, so it can buy you a second or so here and there. in the end, you just need to get far enough out of sight for them to lose track of you, so risk cliff jumps and water if it comes down to it.
but yeah, spear first so you can take them on. a rock and half health when you spawn leaves you no chance to kill a wolf or bear; but i do like that, it makes you consider your battles when you first spawn:)

Since the update I'm having problems killing wolves with spears and arrows... Maybe their hitboxes are just really small and they run way faster now, but I haven't been able to take one down yet. Bears? One arrow. This is a pretty bad combination of dying easily and loot only lasting 60 seconds. :(

Having played a lot of DayZ I am kinda used to just using terrain to my advantage to evade dumb NPCs like that. Seriously just exploit their horrible pathfinding.

Well, I think I know how we are going to be outrunning wolfs. https://twitter.com/RustUpdates/stat...12389515182081
I have a feeling Garry is working towards being able to make a wolf stop chasing you and go after a deer instead if you can get them in the right position.
The metabolism for carnivores should help lower their aggro and chase range if players haven't been decimating peaceful animals populations in the forest.
