    To quote the dev blog

    "Build System

With this new way of thinking comes a new way of building. Someone mentioned to me that they spend most of their time in Rust hammering shit, and it’s true. As cool as all that is.. it isn’t really what Rust was meant to be about. So that’s gone. No more hammering to upgrade stuff, the resource cost should be the tax – not the 5 minutes of hammering."

Is that already impemented? Is it just that we don't have to hammer that much anymore? Or was the plan to remove it completly?

Would it have really taken you longer to load Rust and hit something with a hammer, than type this post and wait for an answer?

    Sry I did not clarify:

I already know I still have to hammer everything because I check out the game after every update. But I didn't know if I have to hit it as often as earlier and if this is what it will be like in the future. That was answered by KyrosWolfe.

Just did not pay attention to how often I have to hit something with my hammer. Thought maybe it changed.

No, as far as I know, they reduced the "upgrade" times already once, (about 2 weeks ago), but haven't reduced it further since Friday's announcement. I think when they do change it, (probably sometime this week), it will be something more noticeable than just a minor tweak to the "upgrade" times...

A bummer I really liked the "hammer stuff to build" mechanic :/ so removing it completly would hurt. The only upgrade for the current system I would have liked was selecting blueprints with alternative fire of the hammer instead of having to switch to the blueprint.

Yes, I also like the current "hammer stuff to build" mechanic, and don't even mind spending a couple of hours hammering to build an elaborate lvl6 base. The only thing that drives me crazy is when some griefer comes along and in 60 seconds, has blocked me into my base.

I hope the new build/upgrade mechanic will be as good, and won't stifle our building creativity, because for me, that is one of the main reasons I play Rust, not to run around with a Thompson shooting nekids.

I hope the new upgrade process will still take a few seconds. About the same time it took to hammer it.
I am thinking along the line of:

You need 10 rock to upgrade your wall.
You hit it once with hammer.
An animation will show the change to the upgraded version in a few seconds.
    Complete

Or you need 10 rock but only have 7.
You hit the wall once and the animation will be played 70%
