Just wondering what you guys think of this idea. Right now we have two different branches, and you need to switch between them in Steam.

What if we put the experimental version on the main branch but in a sub-folder? Then when you launch Rust it would ask if you want to play the real version, or the experimental?

The downsides to this.. you'd get constant updates for the experimental version.. even if you don't play it.. and it will take up room on your disk.

The upside is that the experimental branch is more accessible, and you can have both installed at the same time.

If it's technically feasible, instead make experimental have both branches. Now those who want to experiment can play normal AND experimental avoiding the disk usage bloat for those who don't want the experimental version.

to me it sounds like a good idea, but i think rather when the experimental branch is in a more playable state.

For me it would be fine to implement the experimental into the "real version" as my disk space and internet speeds are not of any problem.

The problem however exists for your general audience who might not have the fastest internet speeds or a unliimited bandwith/download capacity. If they then still want to play the normal game the experimental updates are forced on them whilst they may never install it. I am not sure how big those updates for experimental are usually, but for another game i know people who have problems downloading monthly updates of 200 MB since it takes them a while. If you need to log in quickly because your house is being raided or just want to have a quick check, I can imagine it might be frustrating when having to download those updates. For those who are eager enough to check the experimental it is pretty easy to switch back an forth anyway.

I think you will have to ask yourself what you and the dev-team will gain by making the experimental version more accessible. You yourself have pointed out in the past that a smaller testing group can be more beneficial to the development of the game. Do you really want the masses to use the experimental build in its current state?

The other critical issue I see is that the updates to experimental don't seem to be incremental. 200-500MB of extra data every couple of days might not be trivial for some players.

I think it would be epic to be able to access both a lot easier. But I only have 4 gig of internet a month to use. How big would the updates be and how often? A couple of hundred gig a week wouldn't be much of a problem for me but I am not sure about other users

I do however prefer to run Rust from my SDD, which is only 128GB so i kind of would prefer to just have one out of two installed. But that's me i guess.

    Wouldn't be a biggie though!

I'd rather just choose when I load up the game, personally. More convenient - the extra size is of no concern (for me at least).

I think it is a great idea. I think there is a lot of players that are not reading the Devblog, they dont even know that an experimental branch is ON. They just think that the old version is what exists and they are waiting for an update. If you have the option of playing the experimental branch when you start RUST, maybe a great number of players could start seeying what is happening, and what is going on in the development. I think it could give a boost to the experimental branch.

Yes, because it's a pain in the ass updating every day :D But don't make the 'classic' version of rust harder to play. A lot of love has gone in to some of these servers.

Yeah, it would save me having to download the main branch every time I want to switch back after checking out the updates on the experimental.

I don't care about my disk usage, but I don't really like to download the "experimental" update when I want to try the new feature, and then go back to the "default" version and re-download everything.

Like you said on Twitter, 2 branches should be 2 games on your library, but your idea is fine.

Great idea i would play the experimental branch if you did this, as it is im not playing it as one i dont know how to and 2 i dont have patience to mess about to just play it either.

I think a greater audience will help you to get the developement process faster.
A plus is also that most players will see the process the game makes. (I think more than with your dev blogs).

Would Releasing Experimental onto Steam this way make it also available to Server Hosts like Multiplay? If it would, then it's a yes from me.

I'd prefer to keep it like how it is now. First I would have to delete a game to make space for the experimental version that I wont play until it's the main version. Also my internet is extremely slow and most games I have require updates I just haven't installed and that makes me unable to play them.

I'm sure I'm not the only one out there with 100/100 internet.

It's still an Alpha game... We have a privilege to be abble to play it in this stage but it's there for one reason... To test it and help you make progress on it.

So if you think it will help the development of the game... you definitly should do it.
It's kind to ask us about it, but you don't have to. The main objective is to make progress and make a finish product ;-)

    Wouldn't be rust 1.0 vs 2.0, as there isn't a finalized rust.

Garry, I would wait until you have the new servers code available for your chosen ISPs for the experimental branch. Otherwise your going to have a crushing amount of people trying to cram into your tests servers. With the follow up threads here and elsewhere about not being able to play the experimental.

(As a totally off subject, I hope when you go to Unity 4, you implement PBR/S.)

If it's just to make things easier on users... Then I don't know if it's worth messing around with. If it somehow helps the development end (as it seems it may from earlier posts) then I'm all for it.

agree we all Know they are Rust (legacy) and Rust (experimental (to become just Rust)). i think it's easier to call them 1.0 and 2.0 as most people understand that.

If it helps development The faster the better :)
