As we've recently discovered here, Garry is planning to implement 3rd person view for Rust. It's rather controversial, therefore I'd like to ask as many of you as possible - what do you think about it.

I've created a simple poll for that purpose that has also been posted on Rust's reddit page.

Hopefully we'll gain some wide repsonse that could be possibly sent to Facepunch for them to analyze and react the right way until anything has to be reversed.

I don't see why a 3rd person view would be 'controversial'... but given the high degree of nerd rage that's prevalent on this forum, I wouldn't be surprised if people had a fit over this.

3rd person view would help you peek above the walls /mountains/right-left when u fight . It would simply ruin the fun that the FP offers . no surprise at all , no risk when peeking and so on .

3rd person would bring more camping and peeking while safely tucked behind a wall or rock. I like the fact that my enemy is using the same camera as me, this is why i play hardcore DayZ. I mean im all for servers having different rules but 3rd person has no place in these types of games (Rust/DayZ/H1Z1/ISS)

Yup im in the same boat, i cant play TP unless the game is specifically intended to be TP(an example being ghost recon). i played non HC dayz for maybe 25 minutes, havent left HC since.
Im fine with third person being implemented, some people seem to enjoy no challenge, but it better be defaulted off, and i better be able to hide all servers with it on.

Personally, I am not fond of that option, reason being those as stated above.

It would be better if made a toggle for the server owner, if members of the server would like that feature then the administrator is willingly going to enable it. So we are given a choice, othrr than that.. no for 3rd person.

Not saying that I am against a 3rd person view, but if/when it is added, there is almost certainly gonna be a giant increase in requests for a female character model.

I think one of main aspects of Rust is the "surprise", the fact that you might be stabbed every corner. Third person view might ruin that. I am completely against it.

Edit: it will actually RUIN that.

It would be nice if they did it right. Like hiding player models along with other valuable information unless your player was in a position to actually see what is going on. The 3rd person "wallhack" is completely game changing.

if skyrim didn't have third person the number of naked female player models would drop to 0

Damn. More players on DayZ go third person from what I have seen by far. The issue is if most of the players choose third person servers, the people who still want first, are kinda screwed since the populations won't be on the first person servers.

Personally I think its a bad choice, having it force FP made it different from the other survivals. Which I thought Gary was after. *shrug*

This. Players gravitate towards the glitches and shortcuts. Do this and you'll end up with a handful of low-population niche servers who cater to the "realism" crowd. You can give everyone rocket launchers with heat-seeking missiles and "maintain balance", but that doesn't make it anything other than stupid.

Come on, Garry, Jesus... do you want to aspire to make a legitimate "survival" game, or do you want to cater to the shitty ISS/DayZ wall-campers? Leave third-person view for RPG games like GTA.

Toggle doesn't make ANY sense. It's just like the turning grass on/off. Everyone is basically forced to turn grass off at the moment because if you don't, those who do will have an advantage and will spot you easier.

In the same way, those who play with third person view would cleary have an advantage over players who play on first person view. Again, everyone would be forced into third view and the gameplay would change in a way that it wouldn't look like Rust. The feeling of the unknown is the main thing that made this game so fun. Again: third person view would ruin that.

Seriously, I really hope Rust stays in first person view. This is the worst idea since the lockpick and I simply fail to see why they are thinking about doing it.

Please FacePunch, whatever you do....do not add third-person mode.

This would really be a turn-off for me and remove the solid FPS feel that Rust has. I'd probably give up on Rust...dispite "Rust 2.0"

this. and like tf2, where its command controlled so we don't have to put up with one or the other. that said, personally i'd be leaving it in first person, not third when i play, disadvantaged or not ;P

i remember this being the same in darkfall when they were debating upon first /3rd person.

they kind of remedied it by making all shooting(archery, magic)fp and melee 3rd person.

i realize the games cannot really be compared, as they are completely different besides sandbox and full loot.

however when they made unholy wars(read darkfall 2) they added the toggle.

All the "hardcore" fp supporters screamed and stamped their feet and threw a temper tantrum. then they toggled off their fp.

almost no one uses it now because its pretty much a nerf to yourself if you do.

I kinda liked it the old way and wouldnt mind seeing 3p in just melee.

i realize people would hide , equip a melee wep and peek that way but that also takes time and if you do that to peek and see the guy running over the rise at you guns ablaze, you wouldnt have time to switch.

i think it could be implemented well and even if they DONT add a toggle im sure server owners will figure it out and plugins would be made the day after the patch so i wouldnt worry about that.

MORE options is NEVER a bad thing guys.

edit: also the poll is pointless for several reasons 1) garry is gonna do what he is gonna do regardless of the poll 2) only the more "hardcore" angry people go on the forums to vote for stuff like this. it doesnt take into account the demographic that just plays and has fun and doesnt feel the need to come nerd rage on forums all day long. no matter the results the poll is invalid.

It's a shame Garry views it as "everyone can do it so it's balanced". Sure everyone can do it, but the guy crouched behind a rock waiting for you to get closer will always have a significant advantage over you as you can't look over or around the rock/tree/wall until you get to it. Not to mention the guy cover camping can adjust his position based on what he sees you doing as he gets closer. You will never know he is there unless you get close enough for him to spring his ambush. They are going to be centered on you the entire time they go from cover to exposed and if you are smart your view will be focused on the object as a whole. Every tree, rock, wall and closest mountain. Campers will engage you at your weakest as the can watch you the whole time from behind protection as they wait for you to be the furthest away from any nearby cover.

Do it right Gary, third person is fun but exploitable. Remove the exploits and put in some sort of detection.

Garry has a point when he said "The last thing we should be doing is making decision based on poll results."

1 106 players don't want the 3rd person. 446 want it and 573 don't really care. So what are you doing as a dev for the 446 people that really want the 3rd person ? You can't ignore them.

I hate 3rd person, but I'm pretty sure some people really want that feature. So the best thing is to let the server choose to enable it or not.

If the majority of servers end up having third person ( like dayz) I'm quitting rust. This will destroy the risk factor and PvP in rust. Encourages hiding behind shit and peeking unfairly. If garry really feels like he has to add it in then he should make it first person locked default.

Mainly because It would give more viewing capabilities to everyone. For example U could peek on ppl while hiding behind wall/rock and having 0 line of sight with anyone. It happens on DayZ and it will happen here.

Yea I don't like the idea of third-person. I realize that the game doesn't have to be (and can't be) 100% realistic but I'd still prefer it to err on the side of realism -- a magical floating camera that you can move around you is not realistic.
Not to mention how ripe for exploitation this would be... glitching the camera through walls, looking behind or above things that you wouldn't normally be able to...

If people would have the choice then whatever, that's fine. But I'll definitely only play on servers that have first-person locked on.

It's absolutely possible. The problem is most developers don't care enough to to implement such checks, some even consider third person camera exploiting a feature or "clever use of game mechanics".

For those who didn't see it, this is what Garry said on reddit:

"My plan right now is to allow servers owners to choose between force first person, force third person, client choose. By default, on community/official servers it will be toggleable on the clientside.

Third person obviously does give players an advantage in terms of looking around corners etc.. but if everyone has the ability to be in third person mode I don't see it as a balance thing."

You're forgetting there are some people who don't pvp...that being said, I don't know this percentage. Maybe it's less than 1%? Maybe when Rust is complete they won't have pve? I won't play the game then...but in the meantime I will...so the toggle would work for me.

I find it similar to say, GTA...whereby I enjoy the ragdoll physics of my avatar eating dust...I can't enjoy that in 1st person...again, just saying

Exactly my thoughts, man! I just can't understand WHY.

    why NOT?

he wants us to be able to do anything we can dream of. like a glorified lego table with infinite blocks and better graphics.

the only downside to it, when you get down to it, is that YOU and others like you DO NOT like it.

there are many others that do. and as i stated it will be an option to force fp or someone will make a plugin to do just that. allowing EVERYONE to play as they please.
