No, they're for crafting badges, and in turn, increasing your profile level.

They have no purpose, unless you like collecting badges and gaining xp, which is kind of useless.

It depends. The higher your lvl is the more profile customization options u get. Also the limit on how many friends u can have goes up.

Further more when u craft a badge u get some "extra" stuff along with it. So if for eg. U will craft Rust budge u will probably get Rust profile background of some sort, maybe some discount coupons, emoticons and basically some random stuff :P

Once again for some ppl all the stuff mentioned can be totally useless but for others collecting and customizing is awasome.

+5 to friends list limits, if nothing else, if you're a very social person.

You earn a certain number of trading cards by playing the game, but not enough to complete a set. Buy them from other players off the Community Marketplace or trade for cards with other players to complete the set. Once you have a full set of cards for a given game (e.g. the five cards for Rust), you can go to your Badges menu (under the your-name menu in Steam) and a new button, Craft, will be activated.

Crafting this badge puts a little sticker on your profile that is basically meaningless, and you get three things put into your inventory. These are typically a profile background (you can now customize your profile's background) and an emoticon (used in chat and on Steam forum posts) for the game you crafted a badge for, and a coupon for a game on Steam at random. Sometimes the outcome may be different, e.g. during the summer and winter sales there may be special item drops in the badge system.

Crafting also gives you exp, which is a dumb little progression system Valve put into Steam to make it a game. The practical purpose to this is, you get customization unlocks for your profile, and your friends list max limit is increased by 5 with most levels.

It really is nothing more than that, at the moment. The one other thing is that, once you craft a badge, that puts you in the running for booster packs. When someone crafts a badge for a given game, that player creates a booster pack in the system, and the booster pack gets randomly assigned to someone who's already crafted that badge before. This way, more cards are created for trading. Boosters contain 3 cards, and rarely contain foil cards.

The difference between a regular card and a foil card is the badge that comes out of it. Regular game badges can be crafted five times, and you increase your odds of getting a booster every time you craft the next level. A foil badge can only be crafted once and is basically just the premium snazzy tryhard version of a regular badge. Because of the relative rarity of foils, they tend to be several times more expensive than normal cards, if not >10x, and are basically a status symbol of spending money on the Marketplace.

But, that money's going to other players primarily, not Valve, so it's not all terrible.

Not sure if that'r correct as I have gotten booster backs for L4D2 and TF2 without crafting any badges before.

Also, thanks for posing the extra icons I missed a few. I'm going to go back and edit my post.

Those could be special, since Valve does occasionally do fancy and special things for their own properties. e.g. TF2 was the first (and for a while, only) game where you had to buy things from the Mann Co. store to get more card drops. HAWKEN now gives you a card for every $9 worth of micropoints you buy, don't know if any other F2Ps on Steam do this.

Or it may have changed, or it might've been a glitch, but in general, that's how you get boosters.

I once got two Scribblenauts Unlimited boosters at the same time.

Ah so I should actually try and complete at least one badge per game?

About many booster backs do you get a week? I have only earned like 3 booster packs since the trading cards were introduced to steam.

Looks like Valve wanted to try and squeeze some money out of this game before everyone catches wind that it's full of cheaters and quits.

I, too, am looking forward to that "next update" I cant wait to see the new rocks. New rocks are guaranteed to bring back as many people as the last two "patches" combined.

I don't even know how to respond you you guys...
First of all Valve didn't make the trading cards, Facepunch did.

Trading cards are not some dirty money scheme, its just something extra to do. If you don't want them give them to someone or SELL them on the steam market to make yourself some money.

If your so upset about the progress of the game, maybe take a break and play some other games then come back to Rust later. Just a suggestion.

Firstly, it doesn't matter who MADE the cards, I'm talking about where that money goes. Valve AND FP get a cut of those profits. I love the Steam Market, and I use it all the time. I buy profile backgrounds every few weeks, and I'm a level 20 Steam Member. Even if it WAS a dirty money scheme, I would gladly get involved.

Secondly, I AM taking a break from that game. Since February, I've been three hours away from 400 hours. Still haven't played. Why do you think I'm on this forum posting my opinion? It's because I'm not playing that game! ;)

shame the emoticon (the rating version, likely) wasn't added to garry's mod's drop list yet either. maybe still issues with copyright even though someone created an original graphic--?

10% goes to Facepunch; 5% goes to Valve, 85% goes to the seller.

I'm not making a new thread about this, so read this post carefully.

I have two full sets of Rust trading cards to give away and this thread is the only place for it.

Requirements: You must own Rust on Steam, because I'm not rewarding pirates or alt account abusers. I don't actually care if you're VAC banned if you're a cheater, but you have to have bought it. Also, your FP account has to have been created before today, just so nobody floods the board with alts, because I don't want to get in trouble with the mods. That's it.

How to enter: Rate this post gaybow. That's how I'll know you want a Rust badge.

** IT'S OVER **At 9pm Pacific Time (that's GMT-7 due to daylight savings -- 7.5 hours from the time of this post), I will random.org for the list of people who've rated me gay and the two winners will get friend requests from me on Steam. If you don't have a Steam account on your profile, you will get a PM asking for it so I can friend you.

If you don't have PMs turned on by 9pm tonight, I'm rerolling and someone else who can follow instructions can win.

TL;DR If you have Rust and have been on FP since yesterday or longer and you want a full set of Rust trading cards so you can craft yourself a badge, rate me Optimistic and turn on PMs or link your Steam profile on your FP account, the draw is at 9pm Pacific Time tonight. Make sure you turn PMs on.

I legit have the cards for this giveaway:

General little nifty tip: Look at the very bottom center of the page. The page tells you the time and GMT offset as of the time the page was loaded. Makes the math easier because you can just figure out the difference between the two offsets.
